A scene with Dee-Dee and Bubbles, speaking with other drug addicts at Narcotics Anonymous (NA). Dee-Dee talks about her inner addict, and making a list of rules of things you won't do to get high, but that list turns into a list of things you will do to get high, once your inner addict tells you to. Like not tricking, using condoms, or not being with two guys at the same time. Bubbles jokes around, rather than doing what his sponsor, Walon, think he should, which is to come to terms with the death of Sherrod. From Season 5 Episode 2 of "The Wire"

Only been clean a week today but I keep watching this clip for inspiration. Every time I think of breaking, I keep thinking of the line “this bitch wants to kill me”. Because she does. She doesn’t care how pathetic and depressing my life has become. She doesn’t care that I’ve burned every bridge and left myself isolated and alone. And she certainly doesn’t care that I want to get my life back on track. All she wants is my at my worst. But enough is enough.
I’ve watched the wire at least 7 times and it still remains my favorite show, and every time an NA scene comes on it always makes me pause and think. But eventually I’d always give in. But not today. Today I watch this clip sober and drug free. And last night I attended my first ever NA meeting. So I’m back watching this again to tell myself I can get through this shit. No more blaming everyone else. Time to finally take some responsibility for my actions.

Used to say to myself I'd only spend five minutes watching The Wire clips. 'Fore I knew it, lost my job, my wife, my kids, my God damn house! All 'cause I wanted to see McNulty stick it to Daniels just one more time, or Marlo recruit Michael for the hundreth time. Used to tell myself I'm a fan. No sir, I'm an addict.

Something brilliant and subtle about the woman that speaks first at the narcotic's anonymous meeting. She's the same person in season three that pulls up in a car in Hamsterdam asking for an eight ball of coke. The next time you see her, it's season four, and she's now a prostitute because of her addiction (the one buying a pack of cigarettes for her pimp from Old Face Andre's store). They show her subtle change from drug user, to prostitute, to recovering addict.
That's why the Wire is the greatest. In every other show, she'd be just a throwaway character, somebody whose first scene would be this "confession" (if she even got that one scene instead of the protagonist).
But the Wire is much more about the whole city than about a few characters; that's why even this scene is set up years beforehand!
Yeah I didn't notice it the first time I watched the show, but on my second and third viewing I noticed that there were so many little details like that. Its stuff like that that other shows either fail to do, or are si blatant about it that it takes away from the power of the scene.
Never noticed this until I read your comment, now on my umpteenth rewatch. Its amazing how dense this show is- you can watch it over and over again but still always notice something new. Something simultaneously horrifying and uplifting is the fact that the show takes place over only a couple of years. Her character goes from a casual drug user to an addict/prostitute to a recovering addict in such a short period of time. Scary to think how quickly it can all go wrong but there's also something beautiful in knowing that no matter how bad things get, people CAN get better. God I love this show.
...and ALL of the pieces matter.

That actress playing Dee Dee acted the hell out of that scene!
Also that same woman can be seen towards the end of Season 5 Ep2 playing joyfully with a baby outside the Narcotics Anonymous meeting and Bubbles is just staring at her in awe.
And seen as a customer in Old Face Andres shop in S4E8. Getting the stare of awe from Bunk.

I just love this show... It uses silence in a very precise way, like when walyon looks at bubbles, such a deep moment when he asks him to share
like another great moment later on, when chris partlow looks at michael after snoop asks him why he wants his stepfather killed, a silent but meaningful moment
From 3:00 on is a great interaction between Bubbles and Waylon. Bubbles starts to goof off about how people treated him. Waylon stares at him to open up; wanting him to speak on Sherrod. When Bubbles couldn't do it, Waylon just bows his head. After he sits down, Bubbles just stares and zones out. The payoff was the scene when he finally opens up about Sherrod. "Ain't no shame holding on to grief as long as you make room for other things." Reginald had the greatest character arc on The Wire. They should have ended his story with more than that 10 seconds in the final episode montage. Although I loved his ending, Andre Royo and Bubbles deserved more than that 10 seconds.
I thought bubs ending was right in season 5. The writers always managed to tell a story with out giving you any dialogue and letting you make the connection in some scenes, Bubs walking up the stairs sitting down at the table no words necessary he won at the game.
I loved that he made it out. There wasn’t a character I was more invested in and rooted for in any show I watched than Bubbles. That is why I wished he had more than those 10 seconds at the end. The more I think about it, his real ending was when he was at the next AA meeting and he finally opens up about Sherrod. That is when he truly made it out of that life.
But those 10 seconds were so powerfull. Have you ever seen another show build up a character like bubbles and then end it with such a short glimpse on the characters ending yet so satisfying.
Him going up those stairs was all we needed to see. Rising from darkness to light.
This is the absolute genius of this show. This girl spent maybe 4 minutes on camera in 3 scenes across multiple seasons and had an amazing arc.

That's why I love the Wire. Characters like DeeDee are better written and more depth or character than ANY character in any other show. Tremendous writing.
If you truly believe that then you’re dumb as hell, there are plenty of other shows that have good writing and character depth, the wire isn’t the only good show that exists, expand your damn horizons.

This scene is fantastic
David Simon must either have personally gone through drug/alcohol addiction, or he had someone on his team who did. It is INSANE how well done the experience of the desperate and hopelessly addicted person was portrayed on this show. I watch these clips of Waylen and Bubbles and Dee Dee and almost always it brings me to tears. I'm trying hard to quit alcohol myself and I'm too afraid to go to any actual in person meetings where someone might recognize me. These videos are the closest thing to therapy I got, and right before I typed this comment I poured out my glass of whiskey. I hope the next time I consider buying more I remember how I'm feeling right now.

Dee Dee seems like a character who could have had her origin begin in series 2 with the dock workers, maybe be a friend of Nick Sabotka or a long lost cousin.
She actually appears briefly in season 3 copping an 8 ball in Hamsterdam and again in season 4 buying cigarettes in old face Andre's store.

I don't know maybe it's just me maybe I got class or something like that....polish. I don't know but I know there's quite a few things I told myself I would never do to get high, and I never did do them. Just because you do drugs doesn't mean you lose your self-respect, And for all those people that are saying I don't know dope addiction....I did heroin for 20 years I know all about it, I just never sold myself short-

I agree...it is sort of repeated learned thing that seems disingenuous. When distancing yourself your not completely accepting your illness and your darkside which isn't integration. Talking the talk comes quickly in the rooms. People can parrot others at times. Learning to speak from the heart is another matter entirely...takes time to share honestly. A process...the platitudes never came easily to me. Walking the walk was another matter to...be in an individual within the collective.

okay well let me explain something to you. Painkillers, Percocet's, hydro codeine, oxycodone, all that shit is basically heroin. They all have opiates in them, and that's what heroin is, an opiate. If you do opiates long enough and then stop your body will go through withdrawals and that is the most painful shit in the world. I've torn my Achilles tendon before and I'd take having that happen 10 times in one day over going through opiate withdrawal. It's PURE HELL, that's why your comment seems like you're trolling. Keep doing those pain killers, you'll see....it's worse than cocaine, meth, it's like crack....and literally 99% of all ppl that use pain killers long enough eventually switch to heroin because you get the same high except better and cheaper. I started out doing pain killers for maybe 3, 4 years, and then I eventually got heroin and it was much cheaper and cost less.....the physical and mental pain you go through to get off opiates is that unbearable that you end up having to buy heroin or pain killers EVERY SINGLE DAY, because your tolerance gets so high and your withdrawals get worse. QUIT NOW or you'll fuck yourself over. Just smoke weed, and drink socially. If I had a kid i'd rather him do meth than be an opiate addict

@@justins7796 It was about Reginald not wanting to share about Sherrod. He kept holding it in and carrying it by himself. He kept joking around and dancing around the issue, instead of sharing about what really mattered to him - Sherrod. That's what these meetings were for. To try and lighten the load. And Reginald was not ready for that yet. That is why Waylon looked disappointed.
