    Description:
Welcome to #Jerusalem, #HolyCity to all three #monotheistic #religions. In this video, we will silently walk through the #JewishQuarter and explore its hidden alleys.
The city of #Jerusalem was first divided into #FourQuarters in the #MiddleAges. During the #1948 #WarOfIndependence, the #JewishQuarter was taken over by the #JordanianArmy, after which the #JewishPopulation had been evacuated and most of their houses and #synagogues destroyed. In the #1967 #SixDayWar, #Israel conquered the #OldCity and took control of the #JewishQuarter once again.
    The Roman Cardo (01:55)
After the #SecondJewishRevolt, #RomanEmperor #Hadrian destroyed the #CityOfJerusalem and rebuilt it as a #RomanCity, calling it #AeliaCapitolina. This city was then built according to the #HippodamianPlan (grid plan), in which there were east-west streets called #Decomanus, and north-south streets called #Cardo. What we see here is the #CardoMaximus of #RomanJerusalem of the 2nd century CE, meaning that this had been the city's main street.
    Batey Mahse Square (10:00)
#BateyMahse (בתי מחסה) literally means "Houses of Shelter". This collection of houses was built in #1860 as the last #Jewish residential area inside the city walls. The houses were established with the financial help of #JewishCommunities in Europe, whose idea it had been to help their #Jewish brethren in the #HolyLand to be able to live in less cramped and crowded conditions. During the #1948 #WarOfIndependence, these houses served as actual shelters for the residents of the #JewishQuarter. At the end of that war, the #Jordanians concentrated the #Jewish inhabitants of the Quarter on this square, from where they were escorted out of the #OldCity via the #ZionGate.
    Western Wall Lookout Point (18:30)
From this amazing #ObservationPoint we have a unique view over the #WesternWall and the #TempleMount, which sits on top of it. On the #TempleMount stands the #DomeOfTheRock, which commemorates the #AscensionToHeaven of #Mohammed. Next to it stands the #AlAqsaMosque, which is the third-holiest #mosque in #Islam. The #JewishTemple, which was destroyed by the #Romans in the years #70CE, stood on the spot where the #DomeOfTheRock stands today. Jews from all over the world flock to the #WesternWall, as this is the one location where they can pray while being physically closest to the #AncientTemple.
    Hurva Synagogue Square (24:15)
The #HurvaSynagogue stands at the center of this square, which is the focal point of the #JewishQuarter. This immense and beautiful synagogue had been destroyed so many times that it received the nickname #TheRuin (#Hurva). The last destruction came by the hands of the #Jordanians after the #1948 #WarOfIndependence. The #synagogue was then only rebuilt in #2010, when the old plans were used for the exact recreation of the previous structure.
