WW2 In America : I Almost Ran Over A WW2 Anti-Tank Mine

- Today I set out to explore in depth the Palen Pass maneuver in the Mojave desert of California on my Yamaha 225XT. As I traveled along, I nearly ran over a WW2 practice anti-tank landmine that had recently become uncovered in the middle of the roadway. I had found these before out there but was quite amused to witness one that had been laid in a roadway minefield over 80 years ago and was still in-situ. I did move it out of the roadway as I feared it might cause a truck to get a flat tire. I also chase a dust devil a little later for the halibut an do some other stuff.
About Aquachigger:
I enjoy metal detecting for historical items like gold coins, relics, silver coins, and other buried treasures. I also metal detect for gold and silver nuggets and even meteorites. I like to make videos that promote my choice of lifestyle that includes outdoor adventure,
metal detecting, yapping, searching for river treasure, SCUBA diving, exploring abandoned places, hiking, caving, caring for animals and pets, and observing the things outdoors that often go unnoticed by most people who are not familiar with outdoor adventures and nature. I keep my CZcams "Aquachigger" channel family-friendly and hope you subscribe if you like my style.
BTW, you can also catch me here, / chiggsarmy ,but I may get a little edgier there. FB isn't a place for kids anyway...lol.

Another Mojave adventure and a more thorough exploration of the Palen Pass maneuver area. I hope you join me! Thanks for watching.
Solar ! Waiting..for my permit !😂
Hey Chig have you ever seen the movie The Hills Have Eyes? It's based on a true story and from that area. lol...
Be careful out there. We want to keep you around.
@@PabloDiablo682 I believe rock climbers use similar devices to anchoreyes/hooks for ropes when crossing faces, etc.
It must have been amazing to be able to lay on top of your truck and watch the stars! It's been a long time since I've had a clear view of the night sky. Thanks for sharing!
The tubesock is brilliant! Thanks for that 👍
Excellent moto-vlog Chigg!
You were in my neck of the woods. Great video. 👍👍
Nice dirt devil catch
Cool dust tornado!
lookin for mines, and found mines? how fun!
We also have a huge area in Arizona that Patton used called Camp Bouse. They tested secret tanks with bright lights on them.
I haven't been there yet. Maybe next time. Thanks
Scary stuff! Thank goodness that land mine wasn’t live. Yikes!
Loved you chasing the dirt devil! 🌪. Really cool to see! Thanks!
Man's gotta know his limitations stay healthy safe travels 👍
That dust devil was pretty magical, so thankful you caught up to it!
Looks like a mounting anchor of some sort (the strange unidentified arrow thing)
I had no idea the chigg was an Ordnance guy in the army. Makes sense why he's always hunting cannon balls and whatnot from rivers :D
Thanx Chigg for another great AQUACHIGGER ADVENTURE
Cool dirt devil intercept. Had one come across the dunes snd suck everyones beach umbrellas about 100ft into the air. Ours hit some poor girl 50 yds down the beach.., spooky and a bit dangerous
That was indeed a fishing arrow head chigger… my dad and I would go bow fishing all the time. It’s a lot of fun… I’m not sure what it’s doing way out there, there must be a spring, canal or reservoir, maybe pond somewhere around there within 40 miles give or take lol….
My dad was a master fisherman and he took his fishing seriously and always to the limit. So sometimes we’d drive for 3 or 4 hours sometimes more just to get to a good spot. Like the golden spike (the last spike of the transcontinental railroad), locomotive springs… where the Central Pacific and union Pacific would stop to fill the trains with water for the steam engines…
It was a natural spring full of all sorts of fish, then there’s promontory point, strawberry reservoir, flaming gorge, bear lake, south fork and so many others lol… lots of good times, fishing with Pop’s, nature, historical sites and pork and beans out of a can, Right up your alley lol…
Love your channel, keep up the good work…
I think you are probably right about that. I used to bow fish myself and have arrow heads that look exactly like that, but water is sooooo far away out there....lol.
I have been out there several times, and my theory is that those were tank tracks from WWII. I think the tank drivers were practicing high angle driving. They always go straight up and down the slope. If you look at the ground under the barbed wire, it is rust stained from the wire sitting in the weather for 80 years. I enjoyed your series of videos.
Love the Area you're in just down the road from home. There is a legend of buried rifles people have looked but never found. Stay safe and keep exploring
I've heard that about other caches. The problem is if you found them you couldn't tell anyone because it would be illegal to remove them. I've heard they were quietly found and removed some time ago.
Love how he seems more unnerved by finding the arrowhead than finding the anti tank mine
I mean, it's expected. Honestly that he didn't stumble upon one until now, is weirder.
He was far from being unnerved either time. A bit confused or curious as to why the the fishing arrow was there than anything.
@@ZarahJade1 because used to be water
One of the coolest things I found out there near Calico Ghost town and I guess the outskirts of Ft Irwin was a dropped simulation hand grenade. It worked just like a real one but it was a thick cardboard tube with a pull wire. Well being a boy finding that I had to set it off haha. But I did it sorta smart. I wedged it in a creosote bush and tied a long rope to the pin. Man it went off with a bang! That’s one of my favorite memories in the Mojave.
Exploring or detecting really doesn't matter...ime along for the journey 😁...love it.
Thanks for taking us on the journey , especially with your knowledge of history and amazing story telling skills 😃
Glad you enjoyed it
Back in the80’s myself and a few other marines found live 90 mm rounds that had not exploded Patton used live fire in the area careful on what you kick. EOD set them off with a little c4
What a life! Learn so much from your channel. Enjoyed.
The trails going up and down the hill sides were 1950's "miners" salvaging old desert varnished rocks for home landscaping projects. Palen Pass was mined for gypsum, like at nearby Midland. At 15:05, that is a mine safety clip.
That is messed up.
@@aquachigger Huh? What is messed up?
@@janblake9468 it’s messed up they scarred up the mountains like that for rocks.
@Jan. yeah, that they destroyed the visual landscape to collect a few rocks. It's strange I did not find any piles of them in staging areas though. You sure that these tracks are for that?
@@aquachigger Yup, they sure did. Years ago I saw abandoned bundles of varnished rocks wired together with fencing.
I saw some twinkling in that black sand. Best check her out
Theyre called willy-willy in Ausralia (dust devils)
Have fun
I've been many places, but never a desert. I appreciate the tour! Learning lots! Thanks.
In Australia the dust devils are called a willy willy
Never heard of Tube Sock beer.. Pretty cool.. Fill us in sometime Chig.
I found an m1 garand clip in yuma, wonder if it was kind of the same deal going on. Anyhow Cool video, thanks for sharing!
Most likely.
Absolutely awesome, I think you are right about the tracks.but awesome adventure. Thanks for sharing!!
Witnessed a dust devil pull up and scatter a GP MEDIUM tent and every bodies stuff in it. Yakima Firing Center 1984. 😂. Rode into one a few years ago in my semi in Texas. Pushed me into the other lane. Note to self. Never drive into a dust devil again.
I always enjoy you taking as along on another great adventure 👍🇦🇺
Palo Verde,CA. On the River,That area is rich in gold,.Oh I believe those are thumper lines, Teladyne, back in 70's ran through that area looking for oil and gas deposits, they set off charges underground, and they got seismic readings. Palo verde Rd. And Milpitas wash road is traveled in that area. Nice area,I lived out in that area in Smoketree Valley .Love your shows brother.
Thanks.
Wish I knew you were out here. I live about 45 minutes from the Mojave and often do gold detecting in Bonanza Gulch.
Heading back out this fall. I'll shoot you an email and maybe we can do a collab then.
Some of the trail you see on the side of the mountain and hill are from track Machines from mining companies taking core samples to see if there any money to strip out of ground
I figured something like that. Core samples make a lot of sense.
Thanks for chasing down that dust devil that was cool to see. actually thanks for everything you do chigg we love you bud.
Meditating on the word mine. Commercial mines, anti tank mines, and on part of some other treasure hunters, maybe even " this is my treasure! mine!" Language is a strange thing. CHASING the dust devil ! that was really fun ! You're the best, Chig. And sleeping under the stars au naturelle! What a great life! Tube sock beer? !
It's Pecos Chigg
I love these places out in the desert 🏜 and Chigg explains every step of the way, what one can expect...cool 😎. Thanks...
You're lucky you didn't wind up in Oz.
You're not in Kansas anymore.
On sandy stretches, just lean back. More than you would normally and let the front tire be as light as possible without losing control.
Though’s grids on the mountain sides are usually were the were core sampling and prospecting for minerals they could figure out the depths and quantity
The roads you see On the Hill are mines.
Chigg.. you legend. When you back in Britain, you have to do a meet and greet. Big fans in Uk
Now I'm gunna look up tube sock beers
The little roads up the mountains are probably prospects but people just ride quads and dirt bikes up them now for giggles up a sketchy washed up trail
It’s a plasterboard fixing chigg
Love the BOB reference at the beginning, and am definitely interested in hearing more about tube sock beer! Haha
Better keep an eye out for the hills have eyes clan 🤣
Thank you for taking us along with you brother awesome
Much love to you👊 thank you for taking us along. I enjoy your videos so much
Those little trails are probably drill sites, where exploratory core drilling was done.
I would have to agree with your theory. They would drill in a grid pattern or from an aerial survey. Those tracks are definitely not random.
Hey Chigg
at 15:00 the grey steel clip thing is the safety used on mine fuses. its called a safety fork. you pull it, drop the fuse in, and arm.
It's called a Harpoon Alger. They have different uses!
Any idea if and how they were used during WW2 in the military?
I am enjoying. your video. I used to go out there a couple time a year really a great area for old vets. Have you found the defensive line of "L" shaped bunkers(?) as I recall there were five or six and one pillbox? The training mines were blue in color and filled with phosphors so they would smoke when ran over. Keep up the great work .
I have really enjoyed these trips. Thanks for sharing these with us.
Glad you like them!
This is my third year watching your videos. So thankful for your videos and knowledge. Always loved playing in those Dustnadoes as we call them here in Oklahoma. Thank you so much!
It would be pretty cool if you could find the live fire area the tanks used ,I imagine it would be at the base of some mountain they used to stop the shells
Thanks Chigg!
My dad was crippled and couldn’t work on the farm. Wearing all of his clothes he hitchhiked west and found work bussing dishes at Sky Way on the Highway in Blythe California.
Good afternoon from Southeast South Dakota
What type of shirts do you use?
Tube sock beer? Say no more, I'm in.
I envy this adventure. I grew up in El Paso, my back yard was the desert. We’re in Northern VA now, my wife just doesn’t understand why I want to be back in the Southwest.
I love El Paso ! Magical, mystical, soo full of culture, and some edgy metaphysical stuff out in the desert. I want to go back there.
We did a modern version Large Co2 extinguisher with old horn instance Cold ones!!!
love Mojave Chig!🎉 always fun to hear you talk
I imagine chasing that dust devil for quite a distance, then stopping and saying oh $#&% where's my bike ???
Hope your song gets on CZcams ????
Tube sock beer. EXPLAIN please!
Hi Beau i think your arrow head is from a line launching gun if they were practicing scaling cliffs ,
I wondered about that, but didn't think it would be strong enough to hold a loaded soldier.
Harrington & Richardson Model 85 Bridger Line Throwing & Harpoon Gun Kit by Naval Company Inc.
I love these vids of the desert you've put up so cool and good to hear the history I think it's important so a big thank you chigg x
🐳🐳🐳That is a harpoon tip you found, I used to hunt land whale there as a teen aged Eskimo boy.🐋🐋🐋
I spent some time in that area of California in my younger years. After ww2 there was a lot of people out there looking for uranium. A lot of those tracks are from that. They would tare up the ground dragging a geiger counter. To look for profitable deposits.
Soldiers names and dates are inscribed on rock faces in that area.
good move turning back as that's the last place to make a mistake.
I like your bike, sir
Those whirlwinds are actually thermals that are traveling along the ground. Thermals are what glider pilots look for to be so they can gain altitude while flying a sailplane. Oh, and the tip you found looks like it came from a speargun which is strange considering you are in the middle of the desert. Great video all the way through except for the TMI about your sleeping style.
If you want to cool a soda down in your fridge, wrap a wet paper towel around it and put in the freezer. In 10 minutes it will be ice cold.
That dust devil didn't look real. I mean I know it was real, but it looks surreal and a bit like it was CGI.
The most I've seen here in England is little whirlwinds picking up crisp (chip) packets in my junior school playground and whipping them round and round in the air
Loved getting close and personal to the whirlwind, but why get "buck naked" on top of your truck to sleep? Honest inquiry.
Love the desert. Thanks for taking us along. Please explain tube sock beer sometime.
Very cool to see the dust devil, thanks for the effort to get the shot..
Those dust devils form just like tornadoes but n a smaller scale, a front of rising warmer air slipping past a cooler zone.. I remember looking across the valley as a kid on the desert and seeing a line of 6-7 devils over a 2 mile front, each 50-100 feet high.
Hello 🌞
Don't you think that the Government should clean that mess up?
i hope the rangers donate that training a/t mine to a museum. theyre not exactly common and that one has some history to it.
wow! due to the frame rate on your camera, that dust devil looks surreal.
That was the third one I have found out there in two trips. The other two had the pressure plate and all.
@@aquachigger wow! cool. wish they were that plentiful on the open market!
Albert Blithe actually didn't go crazy or die in WWII, as depicted in Band of Brothers (if that's who you're referring to). He did get "hysterical blindness" during the invasion, but went on to be a highly respected paratrooper, even serving in Korea. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Blithe
Entertaining! No beavers though!!??
Those dust devils can get serious! I saw a sheet of plywood bouncing around about 100 in the air in one once!
Mines or mines
Great video chiggs
A good helmet cam would be nice for biking video, we can see what your looking at and your head's a little more stable platform for videoing.
Of course you'll need a helmut to go with it, also handy if you bail while adventuring..
Love that you caught up to the Dust Devil! I'll have to try that 😆
Love this Chig! Loved your calm aplomb around the anti tank mine ! sheesh! Yes I know it was a dummy but I remember house sitting a place and finding a closet full of grenades. Yes yes, the Base bomb squad came out and assured me they were , though illegal, dummy grenades', but they still scared me !! Regarding this ( mis) adventure, VERY GOOD DECISION not to push it further. We know you like to push it to the edge but that felt dicey when you were up on the hill and your lonely little bike was sitting down below in ...nowhere. Good decision.
The Colorado river is very close by so the bow fishing head makes sense as people bow fish/hunt there. Also, could have fallen out of someone's truck randomly....
