  • What layers are needed to create a fashionable late 1700s ensemble?
    The main garments where completely hand-sewn by me - no machine used!* The stays took the longest at 50 HOURS!
    *A couple exceptions, being 100% transparent 😏 - the pocket is from Colonial Williamsburg and I borrowed it from my niece who is now it's owner. :) My hand embroidered pocket was not finished in time. :(
    The cuffs are machine embroidered with a replica design, digitized by me.
    And the fichu (neck handkerchief) was made for another project so does have the stitches from a machine!

    Yes!! There will be no slander of period-accurate corsets and their movability in this house!

      I've worn garments of a similar era, and the funny thing is that the comical amount of waist tied things don't actually dig in or hurt at all because the weight of it all gets spread out over the stays or corset. I tried wearing just one of my more elaborate Victorian era skirts without a corset and just a single petticoat and I had literal bruises from the weight of the skirts :D Undergarments are important lol

    It all came out so beautifully! I tend to set up playlists like this in the background while I'm working so it feels like I'm sewing with company, so I'll have to go back through and watch the production more carefully later, but I'm amazed by the final result here :) Especially given that the bodice is so carefully fitted and you had to do it all on yourself - my absolute least favourite part of any sewing project tbh even when I'm lucky enough to have another pair of hands available.
    Also good grief, hand sewing an entire outfit skin out in two weeks is incredible/terrifying! I once realised that the corset I'd made for an event was completely wrong a few days out from the deadline and had to panic sew a new one in a couple days - I did most of it with the machine and even then handsewing the binding and channels and so on absolutely murdered my hands. So, major props? And I hope the deadline stress/event drop wasn't too bad afterwards.
    Your videos are always such an inspiration for me, and I really appreciate you sharing them. Case in point, I'm seriously considering taking the plunge with hand sewing some stays of my own. More slowly. Much, much more slowly...

    Love your video and got suggest if look new ideas, cool see dress Combine with ideas of 18th century and the 80s. Then another suggest that think very odd, do Dinsey theme cinderella dress into sleep wear. Example, do Sleepy Beauty dress using sleep wear fabric. Design where dress party comes off and under outfit is set of pajama pants. Give better what talk about, some want dress up like Disney princess, but no where to go or rather dress up home. When some home we are in work gear or pjs.

    Quick question isn't the rump warn other way round that the cloth smooths down the bulk?

    • @emnboysmom
      @emnboysmom Před 4 měsíci +1

      The long fabric piece provides stability, but you want that distinct separation in the middle.

    • @BellaMaesDesigns
      @BellaMaesDesigns  Před 4 měsíci

      I've always seen it worn this way! As @emnboysmom said, you want the distinction of the split rump which helps flatter the design of the Italian gown.

  • @kittybrowning
    @kittybrowning Před 4 měsíci

    Beautiful but I honestly cudnt wear all those layers it wud over heat me I hate to think what it was like on a hot day and I really don't get the extra padded rump thing either

    • @BellaMaesDesigns
      @BellaMaesDesigns  Před 4 měsíci +1

      It actually isn't as hot as you'd think! especially since they've very breathable fabrics such as cotton and linen. But it is a lot of layers! And the rump thing was just the fashion of the day! Just like the bustle of the 1880s or the hoops of the 1860s.

    Would the lady have done her own hair or would a maid have done it even before donning the stays?

  • @LynnHermione
    @LynnHermione Před 4 měsíci

    Did women usually unlaced the stays completely? I keep my own laced up but as loose as it gets, with a knot at the ends, and just wiggle into them.

    • @BellaMaesDesigns
      @BellaMaesDesigns  Před 4 měsíci

      I do usually leave at least some of it laced, just enough to get in and out. But it doesn't look very flattering I think and also with my hair all done up, didn't want to chance messing it up! But yes, definitely a time saver!

    I thought that revealing one's ankles was scandalous in the 1700s. Is that dress a tad short, or is that the desired length?
