    Hey, I got your book for my birthday (Feb) and it has been instrumental in giving me the confidence to build my own natural pond (although I'm including a cascade as I love the sound of trickling water). I've just sat down this evening after a weekend of placing stones in my newly dug pond and randomly stumbled on this video. Just want to thank you for the inspiration as I knew little about building ponds until I read your book and it gave me the confidence to give it a go 👍

    I did some work as you do. Took land plants and tried growing in water. I got success with many 👍🏼👍🏼

    Great job sir! I have to LOL about the Iris, I pulled a bunch out of my yard when we first moved in because they were invasive to what I wanted in my landscape, not knowing that 2 years later I'd be building a pond, now I need the Iris 😆 Thank you for your efforts sir.

    Brilliant - you have confirmed my thinking! Had my wildlife pond for a year now and had already started using stones on the shelves to anchor plants escaping from baskets. Have been struggling with the recommended logic of using soil in baskets (and feed balls) at the same time as removing sediment to reduce nutrients. Thank you

    Right on time - I have several clumps of OLD iris along the woods' edge that haven't bloomed in years and I'd like to move them into the 40 year old swimming pool that turned into a pond 20 years ago, bullfrogs and all. Thank you for your frank advice.

    Great video answered my question about water lilies The internet makes it seem so difficult planting them in soil and stuff. I think I’ll stick with straight into gravel and see how they go. Thank you for making this video.

    The rocks are nice but we don't have rocks like that in the soil where I live. I have to buy them and I'm kind of over that. I'm gonna try soil next time. I'm trying to be self sufficient with my pond and my gardening.

    I find waterlilies need to be anchored in a container. Otherwise the tuber just floats up sideways and the pads get tangled up.I use gravel

    Hi, question about Horsetail plants.
    What's the correct way to plant them. Straight into water or plain soil? Thank you .

    • @Gardenfundamentals1
      @Gardenfundamentals1  Před 3 lety +3

      Horsetail is extremely invasive and hard to get rid of - don't plant it.

    What size is this pond ? I’m digging a new pond right now no pumps , all natural. I’m hoping I can get enough hardy aquatic plants to clean the pond and a few gold fish too. You have great videos! ❤️

    Has, anyone of you here, tried growing calatheas in water?
    Where I live, they need watering everyday, they love sitting in soggy soil, so I thought, what's the difference with bog plants? Why not grow Calatheas directly in my pond, since my climate allows it.

  • @JaceShoemakerGalloway

    Brand new mini-ponder. Wow. Ive been trying to find answers about planting plants in my 30gal pond.
    I just purchased a few of those pots like you showed - along with some Aquascape Potting Media - for 2 plants - the sprial Juncus and Bronze Canna.
    Do you recommend I just put both plants in the water like you showed and cancel the potting media and little baskets?

    What do you recommend for problema with birds that eat the Fish?. Mine have disappeared, not even the bodies

    • @Gardenfundamentals1
      @Gardenfundamentals1  Před 2 lety

      1) Buy more fish - the birds will appreciate it :)
      2) Netting.
      3) Don't keep fish.
      4) More plants. With enough plants some fish will be able to hide. Mine tend to stay under the water lily pads.

  • @Mont_Blanc_Photography

    I'm new to planting ponds, I always worried that if roots aren't in pots that they would eventually try and grow through the liner and puncture it...has this ever happened to you?

  • @casperghost7298
    @casperghost7298 Před 2 lety

    Some plants will do better with a little soil around them, a natural pond will have a soiled bottom and sides, I have a lot of clay in my yard I use for the bottom of my pond for plants, the only downfall is when fish lay in it and get spooked, they stir up a little cloud of mud when they swim off, which is 100% natural if your looking for a natural pond look, just like on the rivers or lakes, if a fish is on the bank and swims off spooked, it clouds that area up until it settles again, and pond aerators cost 500.00 and up for a good 1/2 hp system, best bet is to buy a cheap pond pump 5000gph or whatever size you need, set it in the middle and turn it on, works perfect
