    Great series for beginner improvisers like myself!
    This method really suits me, using a simple context (one chord) and working with how different notes and phrases sound together with that chord, and why.
    Having listened to a fair amount of jazz and blues, I feel that I have an ok intuitive understanding of it, and I have no problem hearing lines in my head that I want to play, but can't because I can't yet translate them to my instrument. And I have been searching for a way to practice effectively to help me bridge that gap.
    This is it!
    Like I said, it suits me!
    Thank you! Great job!

    I like what you're cookin' up there, Doc. I tend to get tangled up on the last 4 bars in a 12 bar blues when improvising...the chords change each bar and the options really open up and so I'm like "Oh, what should I do here?" and then...it's too late. I mean it doesn't happen every time...just sometimes...I mean...just please don't tell Johnny Jazz Pants!!!

    Dr Wally this is very useful. As a side comment and writing here from Chicago, I would envision the term "blues" in a completely different fashion. I hear music genre while you are discussing an underlying music theory used in Jazz. How about a Muddy Water Blues shuffle example for your Q&A? How to apply a blues scale across the chord changes which you mentioned in your earlier episode for example

    thanx again Doc.. finally hearing that "out over the in"...and that "in over the out" .. and how they need each other (matching up) ..crazy simple... and always right next door !

    A quick question i had is that when improvising, do we do it in one scale? For example if we improvise in the key of g, do we only use the g mixolydian mode and g blues scales, or do we change when we get to a different chord? For example if we go from the g7 to c7, do we change from the g blues to the c blues?

    My biggest challenge even though I'm a guitar player is to keep up with the chord changes when we add 2 5 1s and diminished chords in the progression.

  • @MrDavidFitzgerald
    @MrDavidFitzgerald Před 5 měsíci

    I think this only leaves 2 notes out of the 12? The sharp 5 and the flat 9. I find these two give you an exotic middle eastern sound, especially when used together and with their lower neighbour. So you really can use any of the 12 notes as you said at the start! But I'm finding that you need to know where they relate to the chord tones in order to resolve them. And trying to mix them randomly doesn't work for me. If I want to employ that middle Eastern sound, I need to commit to it for that lick or bar or whatever.

    I'm practicing more often without the scale in front of me. Your using a flat 7th, a flat 3rd and a flat 5th alternating with naturals to the scale. It sounds great. Should I be using a metronome and try to count 12 measures at the same time?

    • @drwallysax
      @drwallysax  Před 2 lety +1

      Metronome, YEEEES! Practice smaller phrases first. Get used to hearing the 4 bar phrases. Then, you'll naturally hear the timing of the next chord change!
