Debsey and Sarah! 😍💕 I played the heck out of this back during my mid-'90s Uni days, and still do. I felt that I must have been the only person in my corner of the Pacific Northwest in the US who knew who the heck Saint Etienne was, and that they did so much more than "Only Love Can Break Your Heart". Even though I've never seen them in person (I've not even seen them when they've come through Seattle 😢), yet over 3 decades later, I remain a fan.
I lived in Vancouver BC and I saw them live there in the late 90s whilst I was at uni. I thought I was alone until going to down to the bar to see a group of amazing music lovers.
He's on the phone was the song that introduced me to Saint Etienne and i am so glad. They might not agree or realise but they were considered 'cool' in the 90s and they really were. Sarah has a lovely tone to her voice and they have an awesome back catalogue. Words and Music is one of my faves from their recent releases. Brilliant band 🙏💕
This song remembered when i work taxi driver in Mexico city. Im 16 in 1995 its real flasback 90s.....everyday a lisent this great song in my taxi........now its melancholic....but great times and GREAT BAND
Funny thing: I got to know and appreciate Etienne Daho beacuse of this song, then I began to dive in french pop music from the 60’s up to today….. and what a journey, travelling to france to buy records from christophe biolay polnareff etc et-
Sarah sounds great here. The dance beat could do with being more pronounced though, it's a bit wishy washy sounding, I'd love to see them in an indoor venue.
The other vocalist...... Fairly certain that's Debsey Wykes. Back in the early '80's, she was a member of Dolly Mixture. When I saw them, ( Mayflower, Southampton ), they were supporting Bad Manners. The 3 were all wearing Doc Martens. The skins at the front were doing their thing, gobbing at the stage. The music stopped, as did the singing. Either the gobbing ceased, or the band would walk. The gobbing ceased. They later did the backing vocals on Captain Sensible's No 1, 'Happy Talk'.
I was about to ask "Is that Debsey Wykes singing with Sarah?" And then I saw your comment! So that's two of us who are pretty sure it's her, so I reckon it is. (I love her vocals on Saint Etienne's Who Do You Think You Are.)
Not sure about kids but popular with those in their 40's that knew music. Never really mainstream but not sure that was an issue. The sort of band I'd recommend to kids but say 'sssh, keep it to yourself as it'll make you look cool'
I love Saint Etienne from here to eternity. So many great songs out there. But singing live was never their force. Sara looks like she is not comfortable..

Pete Wiggs is the bearded keyboard player. Saw them in Boston a few years back. He looks exactly the same now.
