- If you catch 'good' slugs, like Leopard Slugs, release them away from the traps. Here is how you make and use a chemical free terracotta clay pot slug and snail trap. Two pots keep moisture in the trap and that equals a wonderful trap home for snails and slugs! You get to evict them. You can decide what varieties to keep, relocate, or remove. No chemicals are used so you can chose what to do.

I've struggled with slugs and snails for years, am a Master Gardener, and read extensively about gardening. No one has EVER suggested this tactic. Thank you! I'll go out tomorrow and buy some terracotta pots.

I'm a novice gardener. I discovered a festive slugball in my potting soil container. Everyone was invited.
I'm here looking for a way to rid my garden of them w o poison. I'm not going to kill them though. I think catch and release elsewhere by switching out the pots.

@@ipomoeaalba936 eggshells are also a good way to prevent slugs from going after certain plants! I also tried scrubbing my pans with eggshell powder for the first time while making my YT video and I was SHOCKED at the results! 🙌
Great way to collect them. I need to point out one important thing about this idea. leopard slugs are good slugs for your garden, they eat dying materials. They don't damage healthy, living plants, but they do eat other slugs, including those that can damage garden plants and vegetables. By eating dead and rotting plants, as well as fungi, Leopard Slugs recycle nutrients and fertilise the soil.
Know your slugs before you kill them.
Yep. Important to know you slugs. I like this trap as it doesnt randomly kill them all.

I have very black ones Brown ones and i think leopard as well. Which one to keep it? Is this leopard because of the skin like this Cat and do we have different types of leopard ones that can be damaging for plants?

Snails ate ALL my pepper seedlings Monday night…not just the leaves…the whole plant, except for one inch of ONE stem. It’s crazy!

It can be crazy. Some varieties are very aggressive on garden plants. Others leave them alone.

The leopard slug as far as i know it is good for your garden. It eats the grey snail. I saw you had lots of leopard slugs.

They may eat grey garden snails…but they also annihilate your crops.
Do you then need to "clear" those slugs away every morning too!! 😮
What do with them when you have them trapped. I used to collect them in milk bottles but if you keep them in the bottles for a few days it gets very stinky and very messy.

As others have said, the big slugs look like leopard slugs and are carnivores, not herbivores, possibly eating the problematic slugs, which are usually the small, grey ones. As far as I know, here in the U.K., we need to squish all the snails. I’m going to try your terracotta pot trick. My slug problems are mostly in the shady parts of my garden allotments. Best wishes
Yes. There are 10,000's of varieties. You have to learn the good and bad. This just gets them to one location. The leopard slug also eats decaying matter and will eat small seedling if I am not mistaken. But they do very little garden damage. Anyway, there are so many as I leave them or relocate them and pick out other stuff.

Thank you for this. Slugs are getting on my romaine lettuce, and I'm so grossed out that even after washing the leaves I wind up throwing them away. I hate slugs with a passion. So did my grandmother. She would hiss like a cat when she saw one. Ultimate in nasty to me. Blech!

They didn't bother me much until I stepped on one barefoot. Thankfully, I had salt handy to get the slime off my foot but it stopped me from going barefoot - for years. I think I'll use this trap and I can get my toes in the garden again!
thank you for this idea. i finally figured out what turned my zuchinni to mush and what is eating my kale/swiss chard and basil! I was putting captain jack down and things were still getting eaten, now I saw with my own eyes, 2 slugs hanging out on my kale, so gross. I will have to make myself not be squeamish when taking them to the woods and getting them out of the pot, ugh.
Great tip. I have a rogue frost advisory tonight, possibly as low as 29°. Hopefully it doesn't get that low, but I'm going to look for our frost cloth and any extra blankets or sheets I can find. I'm not going to make any low tunnels for 1 night. I would have to remove 8' T-posts and I'm not doing all that stuff. Worst case scenario I will have to go purchase new tomato & pepper starts.
I would ❤️ Love some cooler weather! It is already 85 degrees and humid here in South Texas! The snails 🐌 and slugs and 🐛 caterpillars and spiders 🕷️ and fire ants 🐜 have invaded!

Oh man do I have slugs (Washington state, Seattle area) and I’ve spent many evenings hunting them by headlamp in my backyard. I even have a few vids up somewhere! The slugs can be huge and eat up all my vegetable plants and drives me crazy. I’d get 100 slugs a night!!! It’s either this or Bug Geta slug bait. Glad to see this terra cotta pot trick. Gotta try it!!!!
I'm in Everett. The only way to compete is by hand picking and luring. I use a bag of salt and a small shovel. Have you noticed a new slug that is very small and has a fish scale pattern on the back?

A saucer of stale beer works great. Spread a bag of pool salt around the perimeter also helps. Beer is the best.

Great idea using two pots! Slugs are invertebrates, (no bones) so they will crawl through the thinnest of gaps and they burrow through the soil so they most likely will be coming in from underneath the pots, not over the holes.

My grandmother used to use the same method, and it's what I've always used. It also works for snails so long as the hole is large enough for their shell to get through it. It's a very old method that works so long as one is willing and able to get out in the garden daily to remove and kill the slugs, which is the reason I suspect this method became all but forgotten. A lot of people don't have the time to check and collect every day, and some people are too squeamish to collect and kill them. The ease of use of commercially purchased slug and snail poisonous baits made this method all but forgotten. Extra hint: rinse the inside of the pot with some stale beer now and then, the slugs and snails will become extra attracted to the pot.

On my place, the small and grey snails are the ones that eat leaves. I had a great solution for them. I realized they love beer! If you leave a small cup full beer they climb to the cup and get drowned by themselves! Not more actions required but change beer every flew months. If you carb on soil to seat the cup deeper on the soil, you can help snails on their vice!

I have seen these all over my Calvert property but they don’t seem to bother the plants in the garden. But yes! Tons of them!
Same, they got all my Marigolds, and have destroyed my peppers, I'm in the UK so our growing season is short and every leaf on the pepper plant counts. And they've got my celery for the first time since I started gardening 3 years ago, and I specifically grow celery for the leaves.
dig in some jars in the problem area's with a bottom of stale beer, slugs cant resist the yeast and sugars and drown themselves by the dozens in a drunken haze... after, pour the sludge over your compost heap to draw any others away from the crops.
