First of all, Rubik's, not rubix. Second of all, they did not mean illegal as in law breaking, they meant "illegal" as in breaking a Rubik's cubes/speedcubes rule since it's an incorrect colo(u)r scheme

This is why i like to switch between my tiny cube and my regular one. My tiny cube is the illegal cube here. All rubix cube solvers should do this to strengthen their brains and prepare for surprises like this.

It's actually pretty easy to fin out. The middle blocks on each face do not move relative to each other. So if you just look at the middle blocks of 2 opposite sides you instatntly know
Because the center pieces are wrong, it takes 3 minutes learning about the rubiks cube to know it's wrong

That is 100% legal. You can have any color orientation you want on your cube. As long as each side is a different color. For instance, you can't have Light Blue, and Sky Blue. Because they are too similar in color.

I can solve a normal cube in about 40 seconds and the same goes for this illegal cube too as my algorithm is not the fastest but it's reliable and doesn't matter if I switch the colours it'll still give me constant results (atleast It will take the same Amount of time for both)

Rubicker (or Cuber) as you know follow the rule of where color with polar opposite and memorizing them. Messing which color in the other part literally legal as it still solvable but put a Rubicker in a huge disadvantage. The Rubicker on the video regularly can solve normal Rubick around 10 second and you can see how jumbling the color of the polar opposite almost made him lose passing the 30 second limit

It’s just changing the visuals, but the gameplay is the exact same. That’s a cool twist, it forces them to remember the moves themselves instead of just going on colors

i feel like this is still a legal cube .. it’s got 6 colours on 6 sides . they’re just in a different place. it wouldn’t change any of the algorithms people use to solve the cube, just confuse them for a bit until they figure out which sides are opposite which

This is honestly how competition should go. You should have randomly generated Rubik’s cube sides, making sure that they actually are solvable, because isn’t that the whole entire point of a Rubiks cube is solving a puzzle not muscle memory
It's still muscle memory here, changing the colour scheme only messes with our pattern recognition, which is an important part of speedsolving
And the scrambles are already randomly generated.
But no, speedcubing isn't about solving a puzzle, it's about pattern recognition, planning and speed of execution, if you want a more "puzzle solving" discipline there's FMC (fewest move count) where each solver are given an hour to figure out a solution with the least amount of moves possible, every scramble is solvable in 20 moves or less
If it took him 25 secs, it would take a lifetime for me to solve it.

As someone who never got into competitive solving but still dabbled with learning, it’s probably seeing an edge piece with green and blue or white and yellow or red and orange TOGETHER which allowed him to notice it so quickly.
Probably not. It's the middle blocks. They never move realative to each other. So the green middle block should always be on the opposite side of the blue. Same with the rest of them

In my city there are stores that sell cheap cubes with weird color schemes, so I learned to check for centers and corners before thinking about where every piece is
