- What is a dental pin?
In this video Dr. Rich shows and explains what a dental pin is and how it was used in dentistry. A dental pin is a small diameter metal rod that is threaded into a hole in a vital tooth, to help hold in a dental filling. They were commonly used back in the days of silver amalgam fillings to help hold in fillings that were replacing tooth cusps.
Dental pins have fallen out of use due to the use of dental bonding. Dental bonding allows white composite resin fillings to be placed which bond to the tooth and don’t require mechanical retention such as dental pins.

A question for dental students, do dental schools still teach how to place pins?
I have exam next week, and yes they are still doing it😅
@@parsafarabi7492 Good luck on you exam! Let me know how it goes!
I have exam today this will help me much
Thanks for the video, and yes I just had 4 pins installed yesterday .
There was very little tooth above the gum line on this upper back molar. I was grateful for this option as I didn't have the money for a crown.
I just got two pins in my tooth to repair a broken root canal. Its not ideal, but its what i can afford to do atm. Baby your teeth and dont chew anything hard. Especially stay away from popcorn. You would be surprised how long something can last if you take care of it. I had a root canal last for 17 years without being crowned, and it got fixed with dental pins.
TY for the video. I had a pin inserted into broken back tooth with retained old amalgam. The dentist added composite to finish tooth repair. He gave no warranty. Its great to have dentist like mine who are closing in on retirement and give their patients options.
Yes I got one yesterday in a filling in front tooth
One of my big top front teeth has a pin in it. The tooth has had a root canal but I couldn't afford a crown and my tooth was severely decayed and damaged so my dentist put a pin in to make the filling stronger. What I don't like is because it's a top front tooth and it's a metal pin I can see a little bit of the metal colour showing through, this is just in my bathroom where my bathroom lights are super bright but in regular daylight/sunlight it probably isn't that noticeable.
Thank you for the video. How long is normal for the tooth to be painful after getting the pin? I believe I had 2 placed. Its very tender and I jad it done last Wednesday.
I had a dental pin in until yesterday. I had thirteen teeth removed to make way for dentures. Dr. Harrison of Milledgeville serene it and called in her assistant and said there is a rare scene. The assistant asked what it was and Dr. Harrison said " a pin". I'm glad to know now what a dental pin is. BTW, Dr. Macy Copelan of Milledgeville had put the pin in unbeknownst to me. I had been wondering why that tooth lasted so long. To thin a dental pin.
Dental pins and amalgam fillings are a lost art. Thank you very much for sharing!
I had a pin put in my tooth today. I have a great dentist.
Awesome! What kind of filling did you get?
I had a root canal today and had a pin placed with a root canal. I cant afford a crown right now at all. I was told there was only one wall of the tooth left sp he placed pin (possibly pins?) And then used composite to build it up. The toorh looks smaller as he rold me he didn't want me to bite on it. Its the third from my front tooth on mu left. (I was under a GA so im not really sure if it qas one pin or multiple, but ky partner rhinks he said pins vs pin)
Hi, if it was placed after a root canal it may have been a post rather than a pin. The post is cemented into the root canal to help hold in the filling (core) under the crown. Most dentists don't use pins anymore especially with white fillings. It's easy to tell the difference on a x-ray of the tooth.
Thanks
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
I had today a heavily broken tooth, the dentist advised to put a crown, it was too expensive and time consuming for me, so he put a white filling with a pin and asked to do a crown when possible. It looks OK to me!
Hope it last you a long time! Which tooth was it?
Yes I have a pin in my upper 3rd tooth and the tooth It was constructed fell out and now all that’s left is the pain is still and I’m wondering is it possible to re-make a tooth?
Hi, it would depend on the condition of your tooth.
This is a great video! I had two teeth in the past month where pins were used with new composite fillings. Unfortunately, and I don't even know how it happened, a piece of pin ended up on my tongue today. I at first thought it was a piece of tooth because of the weight of it, but when I looked at it, it was a tiny piece of pin. The dentist had been in a hurry when he did the fillings and kept dropping his instruments down my neck and was being very sloppy. How could a piece of pin end up coming out, or could it be that the piece had gotten lodged in between two teeth and then taken until today to come out? This has been very frustrating.
Hi, a pin wouldn't come out without the filling also coming out.
@@VeryNiceSmileDental thank you
A piece of my molar broke off flush with the gum. Approximately 80% of the tooth is broken off. The dentist wants to use 3 pins and crown it. How strong will this be?
Hopefully strong enough to support the crown. It depends on many different factors such as how much of the tooth is left above the gum line, where the pins are placed into the tooth, how the tooth is prepped for the crown ( I like to have at least 2 mm of tooth structure all around the tooth for the crown to grab onto), and how you bite and grind your teeth together.
My dentist inserted 2 pins in gums that had a blister.why?😢
I got one today!! I had a broken tooth and my dental professional said we will try a pin and filling and see how it goes
Cool to hear that pins are still being used! Thank you very much for watching!
How did it go
@@brextonjones263 pretty well it feels weird because it’s the first filling or anything I’ve had so my bite is a bit different but going ok and didn’t hurt getting done because of a local injection so all is fine so far it’s been a week already
Had a pin but that tooth exploded because I grind teeth in my sleep so I had to have the broken tooth extracted and went with partial dentures was 7 years getting this done Covid lock downs and finding a new dentist took so long after the pandemic
Also do you still get pain after a pin in your tooth or is it something else
As long as the pin is placed properly, you won't know it's there.
I have had a dental pin for 2 years but i keep getting infections in the tooth and it gets sensitive when i chew on my tooth the pin itself does not bother me dont even know its there. Can the pin be removed i want to extract and have dentures i no longer want infections and all this dental work done.
Hi, what's the diagnosis of the nerve of the tooth?
My cap came off, the dental pin is sticking out and up. Can I pull the dental pin out?
Great, informative video btw!
Hi, if the pin is in the cap, that means the core buildup (the filling under the crown) and maybe part of the tooth is in the crown as well. If you remove the pin, the crown will most likely not fit back onto your tooth. See your dentist as soon as you can to get it evaluated. Let me know how it goes.
My dentist put in 2 pins and filled with bonding material. Is that okay?
Should be as long as everything was done well. We used to put pins in front teeth to hold large bonded white fillings.
How long do the pins stay in for?
Hi, the pins will typically stay in the tooth for the life of the tooth.
What are the dental pins made of?
Hi, the ones shown in the video are gold plated stainless steel.
Will it stay on permanently or come off?
The whole point of using a dental pin is to keep the silver filling in place.
Can jaw break if after extractions top is all the way to palate. I can't talk or whole face burns and throat. The pain is getting worse. Oral surgeon won't answer and it's terrifying. My anxiety is awful.
Hi Lauren, so sorry to hear about what you are going through. I don't know what is going on with you, but from what I could see from the photos you sent me, you had a nice upper ridge. If you are ever in my area, feel free to come in for a free consult. Though based on your other complaints, I don't think it is solely a dental issue.
@VeryNiceSmileDental my bone is sticking out of palate. Can't talk now. I just want pain to stop. I've had every test it's nerve bone damage
Any pain specialists in your area?
@@VeryNiceSmileDental I've been twice permanent nerve damage.
Is there anything they can do for your situation?
The most stupidest thing that a dentist could do for their patients in my opinion. I lost one of my teeth because of that. And I had to do implant. Great content though!
Sorry to hear that happened to you. I'm very thankful for adhesive dentistry. I hated placing pins.
The pin is left not pain
❤😀💯🙏💯👍
Hi I have a pin in my tooth
Hi, how long have you had it?
