I love finding videos that have been out there for a while that are still amazingly useful. Thanks!
used it for years and yes it is absolutely necessary
thanks for all this great info, Levi. so glad I discovered your channel. You are awesome and so cool of you to share all your knowledge with us "aspiring" musicians. All the best!
This is a fantastic video and you’re a great guitarist!! Thanks so much.
Holy Moly, what a great solo. The whole song is fantastic.
Excellent - Got GP 7.5 and Transcribe last night. This video just saved me a massive amount of time and frustration learning to navigate the software - the explanation of marking out the bar sections in Transcribe was especially helpful. Cheers Levi!
where do you download Transcribe?
Great tutorial, Purchased!
Great vid! Saw your vid on my phone when I was at McDonalds w/ my kid. I've been playing guitar for 30+ years, teaching guitar for more than 20 years, and have been using combination of Transcribe! and GuitarPro at least 10 or so. There are so many fantastic uses for these. When students reach a certain level, or new students who are at a fairly advanced level begin lessons I *require* them to get both of those programs.
In addition to pro musicians using for transcription, it is a great way to get students to 1) develop their ear, and; 2) really learn nuances of playing, eg-> bending strings, touch, vibrato, right hand technique, left hand fingerings, etc. I'll start them w/ something like B.B. King playing Thrill is Gone (live - there are amazing vids of this), and have them slowly go through solo, measure by measure, and begin to transcibe it themselves.
Also, it's a great way to practice and learn not only insane, blazing solos, but also learn songs, practice modes, scales, patterns etc. The ability of Transcribe to easily move into different keys is beyond awesome.
Here are a few ways that you can use Transcribe and Guitar Pro:
1. Transcribe solos (obviously)
2. Find backing tracks and loop them in Transcribe. There are tons of great backing tracks on youtube-> modal backing tracks, drum tracks, etc. Great for going from "boring scales/modes" to creating actual music.
3. Download backing tracks of "real songs". Search "guitarbackingtrack", ton of well produced songs, great for practicing parts, solos.
4. Download Guitar Pro files from ultimate-guitar (or wherever). These usually won't be perfect, but will get you close if you're working on harder solos. Gets you in the ballpark, and then, that's what Transcribe is for-> listen and get it down perfect :)
5. Experiment w/ different solos. This is awesome. For example, I took a killer Paul Gilbert solo in E minor pentatonic (mostly) and used Guitar Pro to overlay it on the song "I Wish" by Stevie Wonder. Dorian vamp that goes: ||: E-7 / A7 :|| Sounded amazing. I was playing that song in a cover band, and this gave me some fresh new ideas.
Hopefully you get the idea. I can't overemphasize how helpful these programs are.
Great transcriptions and channel!
idea 5 is clever! I'd love to see that!
Works great. There are ton of Paul Gilbert Gp files on ultimate-guitar, including lesson type. Download that, download song (I Wish in case I mentioned), and then copy the solo into the song. I'll usually open a third GuitarPro file, copy the solo into that and fiddle w/ it a bit, make sure it's in same key as song, etc, and then copy that into the song file. Or sometimes, copy section of song into new GP file, add solo, and go from there. Great for coming up w/ some fresh ideas. And, obviously, transcribe solo using Transcribe into GuitarPro, and then copy that into different songs to see how it works. You need to have knowledge of modes, etc, and a good feel for what will work, so for people learning it's probably tougher, but good to learn. The I Wish is a funk type tune, and the Gilbert solo was mostly 16th notes, so it worked great.
I want to buy Transcribe! But I do t know where to find the music in a format that I can import into it. There’s so much I listen to on Spotify, but obviously I can’t just drag and drop from there. Where do I find all this music in a format that will work?
I'd figured out many things but the FX feature was one I wasn't familiar with. So much capability in this tool.
Thanks for the video, now I know this is what im looking for......great song too !!
Many thanks for the tip about the karaoke/mono stuff. I´m currently transcribing "Little Girl Blue" by Janis Joplin and basically the guitar is doing a "solo" through the entire song and sometimes the powerful JJ voice gets in the way of the guitar and it´s difficult to hear/transcribe. Now is so much easier! Suddenly boom, I´m already halfway through the song. Finishing tonight or tomorrow!
Thanks!!!
This and Guitar Pro are the two must-haves for any guitarist!
does guitar pro transcribe?
@@llorenzo385 you have to transcribe, it's also a skill that musicians must have.
Wow dude, just went and got the album 🤘
Thanks man, great! a game changer!
Thanks this was very helpful
Hi Levi, thank you for this video! Can you please tell me if there is a way to download a youtube music video to the transcribe software so that I can transcribe the music on it? if so, what do I need to do? Thanks!
Thanks for the review Levi.
I think the X slap is probably for the percussive effect of slapping the strings down hard. Used more for acoustic.
What about if you want to isolate a Piano Track which is sometimes hard to hear say The Beatles Song Sexy Sadie does this software allow you to Isolate a Piano Track as sometimes its difficult to hear a piano track which is smothered by other instruments.
Ok, thanks for this recommendation, seems like a very nice program! :)
One thing though, I wish they had an option on what audio driver to use within the program, since I have one system for "normal" uses, and one system for music recording. Or have I just missed that setting in the program?
Just bought the app using your affiliate link. Hope it helps you out a little and thanks so much for creating this content. I'm a new guitar player (starting at age 39...yikes!) and am really working on my ear training and learning music theory at every step of the way. This type of video is really helpful to understand the tools available to help with the process.
Thanks Sam - I really appreciate it :)
I love Transcribe!
I recently started using Anytune which is nice as well. I still have Transcribe as well which is also great. Capo is also a good Mac only app.
hey ,if anyone else wants to learn about speed up mp3 try Lomonting Slow Music Mentor (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my work buddy got excellent results with it.
got a tip for this software off the latest pete thorn video, searched you tube and came upon your site.
just purchased two liscences off your link to transcibe.
looking forward to getting a link to your music.
this song on your demo sounds great.
ace playing on that track!
he dude - email me at leviclay88@gmail.com
Great info especially the EQ to learn guitar solo's or in my case practicing and learning to transcribe pieces of songs to practice! Thanks Do you have any recommendation to what a good and affordable "pedal"/"switch" I might get to start/ stop/ rewind pieces so I don't have to put de guitar down every time? Thanks a lot Frank ( Belgium/Europe beginner-intermediate @ 63yrs old)
Rock on!
I can't say I do, I don't use a pedal, I have the keyboard next to me. Sorry :(
I wanted to get music from YT to turn into music file to play through transcribe. I used Parallels it worked well for me converting to MP4. Now the hard part, learning to transcribe :)
Dear Levi, I just bought Transcribe after watching your tutorial and wanted to thank u for leading me to this purchase. I also subscribed to your channel. I’m a guitar player from Dallas, Tx, been playing since age 5 and am about to turn 65 on Nov 27,2019. I’ve been pretty much self taught. At age 13 I sat in front of Freddie King back in 1967 and the following morning, with his music swirling in my head, figured out one position of the minor pentatonic, and have been improvising ever since. Trying to learn Jazz over past few years and it is kicking my ass. I have trouble with speed picking as well but I will never stop until it’s all under my fingers. Anyway, sorry for long message, I just wanted to introduce myself to you and hope to meet you” further down the road”. ✌🏻🙏🏻🤓
Thanks very much man! If you need any help with anything, you let me know.
Big fan of Texas, one of my regular students is out that way.
Levi Clay Texas is a good place to grow up with our history of the Blues. Been listening toJonny Winter since the late 60’s and grew up in the same neighborhood as the Vaughns but never got to jam with them back in the day. Then there is ZZ Top who killed us all with their first few releases. Love your work, much respect. I will be in touch, bro ✌🏻
@@romanslegion7771 Hey, I live in Texas and need a guitar player. How would you like to sit in with me and my band?
Done did Buy it through your affiliate link. Thanks!
Hello Levi, just wanted to say THANK YOU again for so much of what has become my very favorite content, and channel, on You Tube! I just joined Patron by the way and am really looking forward to that, as well as having the opportunity of supporting such a great teacher, which you most certainly are! I have a couple of questions: Your videos on Transcribe! were a real eye opener for me, thanks for that as well! In fact, I just downloaded it from your Link here. After the 30 days are up and I buy it will you still be credited for that? If not, how would I go about buying it to make sure you do? I also want to download Guitar Pro, but wanted to ask you first if you also have a Link for that which would also give you some kind of credit? I also "noted" ( sorry, I just HAD to throw that in here) that there were a few things you liked better about Version 6 than Version 7. Which one would you recommend downloading?
Welcome Cliff! ❤️
I’m pretty new to this. I know a lot of theory from piano days as a kid. Now I’m getting going on guitar. I’m a the stage where I am just starting to see the magic of transcribing/guitarpro software and “the advancing guitarist”. One of the things that I’m finding very inspirational is taking Vocal melodies that really move me and learn them on the guitar. Lots of crazy good stuff happening to me when I do this but.........Here is the question. Its hard as fuck. I know the voice and guitar are not the same thing but trying to pick out notes by slowing down vocals seems harder than picking out guitar notes. Do you have any thoughts on this. Any special Levi tricks for transcribing vocal melodies? I wonder if the same thing would be true of other instruments, like piano or trombone? Maybe its just my mind trying to compare to different sounds and having trouble comping the pitch? Much respect for your ear talents and efforts, thanks.
Sing the melody, then imagine how you’d play it on a piano - that’s how I’m doing it.
Hey Levi, dyou think you could figure out the Transcription for Steve Vai's Song Sisters? I've had a look through a bunch of transcriptions and Guitar Pro Files but they still fall short of a good, note for note transcription. any tips or refs for this track would be most appreciated. Cheers!
It’s in a book no?
@@LeviClay I had a look at the one in the book but it's still a bit off on the fills between the chords. :/
Still no software to isolate parts. Any idea what Rick Beato uses? Glad I found this channel from his channel. Thanks for posting this. Will most likely purchase it in the future.
Rick doesn’t use software - he just gets the stems. Usually from the artist
Hey Levi
I realise this is an old one mate, how do I get the format of the song to upload to the slow down program?. Getting an mp3 or wav file is hard it seems
You could make a video of the top 5 hardest solos you transcribed.
15:25 can loop a specific area to pinpoint a specific note
how are you getting the markersi click shift m and it only does it one time .am i surpost to count it out and click m everytime?
yep - how else would you do it? music is rarely at a fixed tempo. You couldn't just say "put a marker every 1.4 seconds" and it be in time 4 mins later unless they're using a click.
I don't have an issue with that at all. If the song is super slow and I want to save time, I'll bump up the speed to 150 or 200 while I'm doing it.
Just purchased the software using your link from your other video. This page's link did not work for me.
How useful is Transcribe! for polyphonic transcription (do you do any, or is most of your transcription of guitar licks and solos?)?
Charles Gaskell if your ears are good, it's going to help them. It doesn't do the work for you, but certainly helps to improve workflow. I had to do a bunch of Holdsworth Chordal stuff a few months back and it made my life easier 😂
When you transcribe drums, what are the things you can
Do to lessen the sound of other instrument track?
I use Riffstation and it marks the music into beats automatically. You can select an exact number of beats to loop, or even a single beat. I find this very useful because, as an amateur transcriber, the most difficult thing is not the notes, but the timing, especially if it's on an odd subdivision of the beat. For example, if it's 16th notes I can see exactly if it's coming on the 1, the e, the & or the a. I've been interested in Transcribe for a while, but this is the limitation that worries me, unless it can do this, can it?
Dude - time to drop the training wheels. How are you hoping to develop your ears when you're clinging on to software that helps you "see" where the notes are.
I looked at riffstation, I felt that the algorithm it used for slowing music down resulted in more degradation.
Lol, that's like saying - how are you hoping to develop your ears when you're slowing the music down, and applying filters to hear the guitar part more clearly :-)
Update: I was worried about marking out the beats manually after having had RiffStation do it automatically, but I took the free trial anyway. It's easier than I thought to mark out, just mark out the measures, then get the program to space them out evenly and to divide them into beats. Having lived with it for 30 days, I can't now live without it, so I've bought it. It does have a number of advantages over RiffStation.
did you manually put the beat markers?
I discovered this software because of you and I can't thank you enought because it's so fucking good. The fact that it slow down the video, show the waveform, loop the section... made my transcription work easier and faster!! Thank you also for showing the fx function which i didn't know until this video. I have just one question is it possible to go over 100%speed ? I don't remember why but i need this sometimes!
Yep - you can go all the way up to 200% speed :)
I liked the tip on setting markers to know where the bars are but what if it’s an odd time signature? How do you figure out the time signature and can you write it in with markers so you’re not confused?
that's less of a transcribing question, and more of a learning about time signatures question - I've done the prog thing for many years so understand them enough to count whatever the music throws at me.
Levi Clay thanks for your reply..yeah I’ve been playing for over 25 years and familiar with playing in odd time signatures but just got into transcribing and I completely suck at it..I can play odd timing when I know what the signature is if that makes sense..but I do have a transcribing question I’m a bassist and mostly into metal and most of the time the bass is buried I do have transcribe! Even when I change the eq to bass settings it’s just muddy and you don’t hear the actual bass lines but just the bass frequency..sorry for the long ass message but any tips would be appreciated and I love your channel and you’re a sick guitarist bro!!
Gold mate, "It's my solo but I haven't played it in two years" ha ha. Yep I'm the same mate
I have Apple Music, I can´t use it with music from there can I?
Jorge Mora no, but you can use youtube and keepvid
Can we transcribe CZcams music videos for transcribing on transcribe? If so, do you first download the video on the hard drive?
I use y2mate
Levi Clay thank you!
Does guitar pro transcribe also? Or do you have to buy Transcribe software?
No software does the work for you
Well done! Question: is it possible to use Transcribe! with a CZcams video?
if you have a video you can use that with Transcribe if you use Quicktime
@@Philrc bro i installed transcribe and i'm traying to use a video but the video don't show up . why ?
@@chadidkhissi7884 ok Transcribe! now uses *GStreamer* not quicktime to play videos.. You have to download the version compatible with your operating system.
gstreamer.freedesktop.org/download/
hope that helps
Is the affiliate link still working? Seems to just go to the main page.
+James M that's correct - cookies with register it as via my link :)
can you explain how to use video with it? I've downloaded gstreamer but I get a error message saying "if you want to
play video download gstreamer"
Thats odd! Have you actually installed G streamer? Or just downloaded it? I'd hit up the guys at transcribe, they'll know the answer. It won't be a tough fix I'm sure. I've never had a problem with it :)
Thanks for answering Levi. Yes I've downloaded it its in my programs list.
Is there a Click function to play along with ?
It’s not really designed for that - the music IS the click
Do you still get paid if we use the link above? Cheers!
Jim Haberly yep :)
You kicked ass on that album..
haha, thanks - on the one hand I take that as a big compliment, on the other I worry it means I no longer kick any ass haha
I'm sure you still kick ass. Lol
Is this software still available??
Yep, still a link in the description
Hi Levi, I clicked on the affiliate link above to buy it, but it just takes me to www.seventhstring.com homepage
that's correct - they track that it came from me :)
Thanks for clicking!
OK, I've bought it now, thanks
TRANSCRIBE: most valuable 40 bucks spent in years !!! Only thing I'm missing is a bpm-grid / tempo guess feature !
it has that! You put the measure markers in, then highlight a group and compute tempo!
Hi Levi, am I crazy or can you not pan in Transcribe?
mono/kareoke -> mix proportions
Got it, thanks Levi
Hahaha! 10:24 sounds like the band Nitro
LOL "Good solo you should check out the band"!!

Hey, Levi, I'm thinking about getting a copy of Transcribe for myself. Do you still recommend it even though the interface seems a bit outdated? I have a copy of RiffStation that I think may do the much the same thing. If you still recommend Transcribe, are you still an affiliate? If so, what's your link so I can send some love your way? Thanks.
I don’t care about interface, it still does the job. Still use it every day! And I say that with no incentive because they’ve discontinued their affiliate program
App sucks....riffmaster pro is better
