one heartbreaking detail i seen someone else point out awhile back is the fact that sam must have layed down facing away from ellie because he knew that if he turned, he wouldnt be able to hear her, and she would be in less danger...this series is brutal
Edit: also i dont know which is sadder, to think that ellie said "im sorry" because her blood didnt work, or that she said that because she fell asleep after promising to stay awake with him..

There's one brilliant thing I love about the direction of this episode. Take a look at 6:27, when Henry is looking across the street. The reddish-orange sign is reflected in the window across Henry's eyes in a way that makes it look like Sam's superhero mask. I didn't notice it until another reactor pointed it out.

A big thing to notice. After that letting from Bill about keeping Tess safe, Joel walks off determined and moves on. After Sam and Henry die, Ellie almost mimics Joel and walks off almost ignoring her pain and grief as she feels responsible now, especially for Sam. Meanwhile Joel, now opening up and trusting others again stands in grief and probably frustration honestly over the graves. Ellie is hardening her heart, while Joel is doing the opposite. Pretty sad in a way.
The irony of Kathleen saying, "kids die, Henry. They die all the time." Only to then be killed herself by one of those kids who died.
The infected child didn’t die

In the game Sam is not deaf. Apparently Craig Mazan (the co-showrunner) called Neil Druckmann (the co-showrunner and creator of the game) one night while he was working on the scripts and said "I had an idea - what if we make Sam deaf?" Druckmann waited a few seconds and replied "Damnit, I wish I had thought of that for the game!"
This series is extra tough on empaths. So many of these episodes reach the core of the soul. ♥

This is *not* going to end well for her. Yeah, that outro was *rough*.
Also, that writing pad that Sam has is a Magic Slate. It's basically a piece of plastic over a waxy back and when you write on it, the wax sticks to the plastic, so you can see the writing stay until you lift the plastic sheet up. It was a toy for kids way before electronics were everywhere.
I dont cry ever with shows or movies and stuff. This show made me cry many many times. Just somthing about the super-real acting chops. There is this kind of thorough conviction, altrusim, and authenticity at the core of the these performances. The audience haa no choice but to feel and experience the full gravity of narrative - particularly the loss - just so brutal and so well done

I have never not ugly cried over this episode. They just HAD to cast the sweetest and handsomest little boy to play Sam.
Never watch this series without tissues or a towel or a sham-wow or something very absorbent. As I've said before, grown men cry for this show and you are beautifully close to the surface emotionally. This show does not pull any punches and reaches into your heart and your tear ducts and pulls with an iron grip. Every tear is well earned and worth it, but unless you are cool with wet sleeves and/or cheeks do not underestimate this show's ability to hit your hard in the feels. So tissues and water-proof makeup (your makeup held up fine) are a co-requisites of the show.

Nice fact: In the game there is no Katleen and there is no storyline about how the people take the city, but there is a quote from Henry when he talk with Joel for the first time: "I don't know if you notice but they don't keep kids around, survive of the fitest...", that quote was the origin of a game theory that was confirmed in this episode with the "Kids die all the time" quote from Katleen

When I played the game years ago and this part whith Henry & Sam happend at about 11pm at night, I remember just sitting alone in the dark for about an hour. I had to turn it off and decompress! Never had a game impact me the way this did.

Once upon a time ago I played a lot of games and then I reached a point where I only had time to watch others play. This scene in the game was the first time that so emotionally impacted me that I cried.
Watching this scene play out in live action was just as impactful. It always hurts to watch this scene.

Agh! I just saw the end of the video. Your reaction was so relatable and it was so thoughtful of you to put the hotlines at the end! I watched the first of your The Last of Us reactions back in April and immediately subbed but in May, during watching the second I had a bit of a mental health crisis and had to go to a&e so I really only got back into watching these a couple days ago because until then I found myself relating this content with my hospital trip and crisis point but getting back to these really made me smile and feel more like my old self again.

this episode broke me i just finished it before watching your reaction im crying so hard :( lamar and kievonn did an incredible job im speechless! the fact that henry knew what he did and he knew couldnt live without him😭
One bright side is that in Sam’s last day alive, at least he was able to finally get to be a kid and hang out with another kid and not be alone.

The final scene in this one mirrors the ending of episode 2. There, Ellie just stood there, processing, while Joel kept going. Here, it was the opposite.
In the game you get a closeup on Joel's face after Henry does what he does. I like the choice here to do the closeup on Ellie's face for her reaction.
My favourite easter egg in this episode was Perry's death. As others have previously pointed out, the guy who played Perry was the VO & MoCap for Tommy in the game, and the way the Bloater ripped the top of his head off is an iconic Bloater Kill from the game, so it was a really nice little touch to give him that death...
Fun fact: the kid they got to play Sam, Keivonn Woodward, they ended up having to send out a casting call on Twitter because NOBODY they tested at first was right for the role, and they only got about 5 or 6 replies on Twitter. When they cast Keivonn, he instantly clicked with the entire cast once he was on set, and he taught a LOT of them to sign at least enough to be able to properly communicate with him on and off camera.
I’m not sure if this is already in the comments but the big guy that was with Kathleen was the guy who voiced Tommy in the game. The actors that voice Joel and Ellie are also in later episodes.

27:30 Sam stood still like that on the bed because he was deaf and couldn't hear her call his name, he only reacted once she touched him.
I wondered if the parasite would give him the ability to hear since if you remember in the first ep it allowed that old woman who was pretty much unable to use her legs almost jump out at Sarah to attack her, so I wondered if it would also make Sam be able to hear once it took control of him
Fun fact: Adam Basil, the actor who played the Bloater in this Episode is 6'6 Foot Tall (1.95 cm), and the full Bloater suit weight is at least 80 Pounds (40 Kg).

DID say to bring tissues... 😶 yeah, such a harrowing episode. even knowing what was coming having played the game, there's something about seeing it play out in live action that just... kicks you right in the a$$, throat AND gut. What an episode. Impeccably well executed on every level, leaving the fully invested feeling EVERYTHING you're supposed to feel. Feels wrong saying I enjoyed your reaction - think it made me tear up more than the episode itself - but you know what I mean!

"If you turn into a monster, is it still you inside?"
In the game, some of the early-stage infected (that you may have to fight off in a button-mashing sequence, where you can get a closer look at them) sometimes have this look of shock and horror on their face from the nose up, even though their mouths are shrieking and their arms are very busy trying to grab you or maul you to death... So it makes you wonder - does the Cordyceps take control of your motor functions before it "eats" your mind away? Or are there infected even in the Clicker phase, blind and their minds just trapped in a frenzied zombie body?
It really breaks your heart when you figure out the answer to Sam's question. In episode 3, when Ellie encounters the infected in the convenience store, he follows the knife with his eye. He recognizes the knife for what it is. He is still in there, but being controlled by the fungus. Sam would have been aware he was attacking his friend, and could do nothing about it.
In the game you come across a woman that very much sounds like is crying, gagging and possibly vomiting while eating a person which points to the theory that people are conscious of what they are doing but the fungus is forcing them to do it, at least in the first stage of infection. Its why they are called infected and not zombies, they arent dead but sick. Really makes this sooo much more terrifying than any zombie movie.
@@Frangus_ Was that a cut scene or are you just talking about a random runner you encounter? There's a lot of random sounds that they make, and I never interpreted their sounds in that way, personally.
I don't think that's evidence in and of itself. Pretty much any animal will track an object with its eyes if it's brought close to it.
The game tells you multiple times that once someone becomes an Infected they are technically still alive but it's all the infection - the person they used to be is gone.
The Stalker that Ellie finds in the store basement is following the knife movements with its eyes because it's looking at an object being moved in front of it. There is no recognition there, it's just reactionary movements.
@@dereknolin5986 They may be talking about the first Infected you come across when leaving Boston - you strangle one and then there are two eating a body. Or when you enter the subway where there are bunch of Clickers there is a Runner to the left eating a body. Both of these Runners make weird noises while eating.
Whatever the case, the Infected are all infection - the person that they used to be is gone. The game tells you this multiple times.
The close up on Ellie when Henry shoots himself is brilliant.
Having seen the episode already I just felt so bad for you at the 25 minute mark, because you were given some hope and you (and I, when I watched it the first time) thought "Ok, ok, they're going to become a group, a team, and grow and survive together", and you were able to smile for a moment after all that tension. But then...absolute fucking tragedy and horror. A big part of me wishes I'd played the game first so I knew what to expect and could steel myself for that moment, but maybe that would have lessened the emotional impact of it all, of the whole series? I'll have to scroll through the comments here some time to see how the people who played the game first were affected by the series I guess. Anyway, devastating, and thanks for sharing your reaction.

The great irony: Henry gave up Kathleen's brother to save Sam, which snowballed into Kansas City falling to the infected, hundreds dying and Sam dying anyway. Kathleen's villain speech about kids dying all the time was objectively true.
That's a wild jump to say that Henry giving up Kathleen's brother directly led to that carnage. You have no idea how her brother would have dealt with the infected underground. I could use that same projector if logic and say maybe they all were destined to die.
What can be said that is not called out enough is the fact that Ellie majorly screwed up. She should have told Henry and Joel the minute she found out that Sam was infected. By not doing so she robbed Henry of the time he could've had to spend time with his brother and say goodbye. There would not have been the attack at the end resulting in them both being dead. But she's a kid and...ahem... I get it.
I have watched a lot of people react to this series, And those who have not played or seen the game this ep gets them. When I watched the game this got me. Your emotions to this ep ... I feel for you mate.

Lamar and Kievonn were absolutely fantastic as Henry and Sam.
There are a lot more tunnels from sandstone mining under KC. Including one called Subtropolis, where the old mine has been turned into a business district for various manufacturing that need a stable temperature all year round. Has a railroad and 2 lane highway over 10 miles of tunnels.

It amazes me how alot of this show is picture for picture of the game but they changed so much too! In the game sam was same age as ellie and wasn't deaf.
Sam is deaf in the show only, in the first game sam is the same age as Ellie and Henry and sam are brothers, also perry is played by Jeffrey Pierce he is Tommy in the games he does his voice and the motion capture. Also the actor who plays Sam is deaf in real life so the actor who plays Henry learned sign language for the show and the big infected is a bloater.

In this kinda world avoiding cities of all sizes is the way to go. Because of People or Infected.
TBH Sam would have been a complete failure as an infected. Once the fungus blew out his eye sockets, he wouldn't have been able to use echolocation since he was already deaf.
