  • Drill is exploding all over the UK, but until recently, nobody knew about the burgeoning scene over in Ireland. The so-called Godfather of the scene, INK, is based in Dublin and proudly spits in his native accent.
More and more, the young Irish MCs coming through are affecting a London accent. Chuckie goes to meet the key players, to see the potential and investigate whether or not there is an identity issue at play.

@john Smith Very true that. Drillers aren't real though and they're not supposed to be considered real. They're merely telling stories about what is going on around them, and they're certainly not causing the Gardai any issues. It's no different than John Denver singing about Mountain tops. If you ask locals about Denver, he was playing to a market. I think he owned a second house in the Rockies and was hardly there, yet you'd think the lad lived in a log cabin surrounded by pines and bears. Admittedly though, the issue with this type of music is that you get impressionable 10 year olds who actually think that getting into a gang is a life worth seeking. The realities couldn't be further from such an illusion.
But you are quite correct; Gangland Ireland hasn't stopped since the Dunne's upped the ante and it's causing a lot of social problems in Ireland.

I started rapping along to my favorite artists when I was like 13. I started writing limericks and other stanzas around then. I start rapping when I was 19.
I started to record music in my mid 20's. I put together my first body of work in my 30's. Producing, engineering, writing.
Also going to school for digital audio engineering.
Learning to juggle the 1's and 2's. Learning everything behind music. To represent me, as a female.
So that no one could control, my music, my art, my message, or tell me what to say or to wear. Or how to spit.
Because when you dont know, you've now left that in the hands of other people to handle. And now you become handled.
I'm 44 now, and I'm still making music. One has to start somewhere.. even though you might take awhile to record. It might take you, a minute to get everything together. It might take you lots of different trails, to stay the course.
Nobody is going to be prepared for what will be released, when it all comes together. All good things comes to those who wait.
The more you cultivate your craft, and learn every aspect of it. Let everyone else jump in, tread water, burn out. Those who have love for what they do, will never stop, but flourish and inspire others.
Everything has a beginning and end. Everything has to start some where. Time is irrelevant when you have love and passion.

Ink is clearly a very intelligent fella. Well spoken and smart with his lyrics, with mathematics running a million miles an hour in his mind. I think it's refreshing and good to see (so long as kids don't buy into gang life being something worth seeking), but it likely this music will remain largely underground because Irish people will struggle to connect to it. It's excessively easy to judge and point the figure at people like Ink under the assumption that because he's not living the life he raps about, he's a dud. That however misses the entire point of being a storyteller. All people like Ink are doing are telling stories in a modern rhetorical fashion. Much of the attire exists purely because both the industry and scene insists upon it. The story must come with an image for it to fly, and that is precisely what you are seeing here. In the 1990's there wasn't a boy-band in existence that didn't pull out the all white outfits, whilst sensitively singing about perfect relationships that don't come close to most of our realities. Just because we saw them in their pretty videos doesn't mean they went about their daily lives wearing white suits, and it certainly doesn't mean perfect relationships exist. We were ok with this because we knew it was boy-band industry standard. It's why I'm left scratching my head wondering why people have an issue with Ink and his fellow artists for wearing attire in an industry that insists upon it. And I'll tell you something for nothing; Ink's lyrics wipe the floor with any pretty boy-band performer who seems to think that it's acceptable to use lyrics like 'You give me love from above' in a song.

Chicago influenced the whole world. Like NYC's 90s rap, Atlanta's trap, etc. Even countries where english isn't the language: Spain, Italy, France...
