Forest Shuffle ~ it grew and grew on us with every play... now we LOVE it 🌳 | Board Game Review

- This gameplay is like its box - so cute and unassuming. Simply put together a forest that consists of trees, other flora, and populate it with lizards, foxes, deer, butterflies, and a whole host of inhabitants. It's easy to get playing because it's sweet and intuitive. BUT scratch the surface and you start to realise that this is a game of focus - pick your battles and watch your opponents' forests carefully. Spend cards when the timing is perfect, and be opportunistic when those cards you need appear in the clearing....

Thanks for stopping by for our review of Forest Shuffle! We're Amy & Maggie aka ThinkerThemer. We're an Australian couple with two very different perspectives of what makes a great board game - Amy (Thinker) is all about the mechanics and enjoys tight, competitive games, and Maggie (Themer) is all about the storytelling and the theme of the game, and the 'world' that the designer is trying to create. Subscribe to our channel to hear us talk about these two elements of a game, and how well integrated we feel these are in delivering a cohesive and wonderful game experience.

I’m OBSESSED with this game, and so is everyone in my game group! It’s super satisfying with all of the set collecting! Great video ❤
Omg I love this theme and all the colors/art in this one! 🌳 those multi use cards would’ve changed my mind too!! 🤣
Thanks so much for a fun review friends! You make this one sound so fun-the balancing act of hand cards + timing make it sounds like there’s way more going on than initially expected in this one 🎉
Glad to find more diverse gamers who do reviews! Subbed and looking forward to more from the pair of you!
Thank you so much! Welcome to the channel and look forward to chatting about games with you!
This game was my best and most surprising find at gen con. Such a great intro game with more depth than it seems. Everyone I've shown this game to has had the same comments as you two.
Thank you for your enthusiastic review!
Love your style and you two are wonderfull to watch and listen to! 💪
Cheers!
This one looks really interesting! Thanks for the video!
Thanks guys!! This has been on my radar for some time and I'm excited for its US release.
This looks so beautiful! I just saw it's up on BGA, so I'm gonna try it soon.
Just tried it on BGA & we're loving it! Lots of mechanics to learn.
I SO want this game!! 😍 Thanks for the video!
I love thematic, nature games and they are mostly aesthetically gorgeous.
So glad to here you like it as it's on my Spiel must haves
Just discovered your channel and subscribed instantly. Keep up the good work! And very interesting review of Forrest Shuffle.
I have this on pre-order, look forward to getting it :-) thanks for the review!
i feel in love with this game with my family :) really fun game and nice video
Love your content. Would like to try the game. Combos are so much fun!
This is the third or fourth time I've heard someone say that Forest Shuffle was the unsung surprise of Gen Con. It must really be fun if I keep hearing about it.
Just played this one on BGA... super fun! Love all the potential combos/ways of specializing your strategy.
I also watch the demo on the last day and picked it up. Also had a first game where I was happy with my 185. My partner ended with 287 and I thought wait there is way more here than I first anticipated. Cheers and thanks for you review.
You are very persuasive with your videos.
Great review and it just came out on BoardGameArena to try!
Sounds like a hidden gem. I went and pre-ordered at the end of your review. Animal/Ecosystem theme, check. Tableau builder, check. Multi-use cards, check. Set collection/interconnected conditional scoring, check check check!
Got the chance to demo this one at gen con and immediately went and got it because we loved it so much!
helped my understanding of the card.... would have helped to show the different elements of a typical card... besides the cost,
Well you've got me interested in this.
Yay to a mid week thinker themer video
Looks good! Have you checked out Isle of Trains: All Aboard? Another small box recent KS that uses multi-use cards. This game kind of reminds me of that. I think you'd enjoy that as well!
This game looks amazing! I didn't even see it at GenCon!
Since when does Lookout publish games with box art that doesn't look like it's from the 1990s? 😂
But seriously, I'm definitely interested in this one. Thanks so much for the review!
Its a must by for me in Essen 😁
Woh! Had no idea about this. Thanks for the review. Any idea when it will be available in Aus?
Thanks for your for the nice enthusiastic review. It looks to be in my wheelhouse. Can I ask is the scoring at the end really fiddly?
I would like to know this too please. I love thinky card games like this but also like quick scoring at the end.
The comment about the cave not being mentioned in the rules: Technically not by name in gameplay, but it is in the setup and the endgame scoring. The Brown Bear and Raccoon explanation in the appendix says how cards get there. But yes, it should really have had a separate 'Cave' section in the rules or appendix.
Great video though. I'm playing this on BGA at the moment, and have already preordered a physical copy from my flgs.
I am going to be picking this one up. How easy is it to find a copy.... or should I wait?
Thanks for the teach, ladies! I had never heard of this game until it showed up on BGA. It looks really cute and fun and my husband will love the mushrooms cards :). I didn't know ya'll were at GenCon, will you be there next year?
where do you buy games from in Australia? :))
Would a scoring track benefit this game? Seems crazy ending and then having to calculate 300+ points. Hope they fix some of the little issues with this one with an expansion or 2nd edition.
The Search for Lost Species also came with little to no plastics involved
Same for Archeos Society, it might have had plastic wrap (I honestly can't remember), but once inside the box it was purely paper and cardboard - I do like the move towards more sustainable productions within the industry.
It _grew_ on you, eh? I see you. We'll have to give it another play to do the same. It didn't feel like I was making many interesting choices.
It is nature, so it is supposed to grow, right?! 😉😉
Phantastic looking game! This will be an instant buy - when it hits the shops here. Amy how is half a deck of reference cards "greener" than a single small sheet of paper/player?? (I would have to also use more sleeves, which I am fine with!) On this question - the main problems do NOT lie with the game producers at all! Thanks for the great review.
Excellent question! I was wondering the same thing!
Would you pick this over Meadows?
I think we would for the easy set up. Meadows competes with too many heavier games for us so doesn't get much table time. Time will tell but this is more accessible.
Hi. How do you compare forest shuffle with Innovation? Eric Martin compared them and Innovation is my #1 game.
We've heard this comparison before and it's a confusing one for us. Aside from the cards being multi-use and the splaying (kind of if you look at the card tuck that way) it feels very different. There's no messing with other people's forests and no race element. We love both games but very different game feeling. Innovation is more interactive and tense. Forest is relaxing and focused on scoring combos for the end game. Hope that helps!
Commenting for the algorithm.
I wonder if Forest Shuffle will overshadow other set collection games like Floriferous, Splendor and Spirits of the Forest?
But Splendor already has made a name for itself - as it has been our for a long time now...
but what does the cave do? I'm confused about that. Thanks!
When the Brown Bear is played, all cards in the clearing go into your cave. Cards in the cave at game end score 1vp each. It's explained in the appendix.
I am going to cover this game is plastic...... Sleeves
Hm, I see a lot I like...those crazy combos like Fantasy Realms, that 3rd card that ends things like Ethnos or other games, and cute animals. Thanks for the review but I have a feeling this is going to be hard to get a hold of 🙂
