    JH Hall. Biography of Gospel Song and Hymn Writers. 1914. Fleming H. Revell Company: New York
    LYRICS:
    V1
    Man of sorrows what a name
    For the Son of God, who came
    Ruined sinners to reclaim:
    Hallelujah, what a Savior!
    V2
    Bearing shame and scoffing rude,
    In my place condemned he stood,
    Sealed my pardon with his blood:
    Hallelujah, what a Savior!
    V3
    Guilty, helpless, lost were we;
    Blameless Lamb of God was he,
    Sacrificed to set us free:
    Hallelujah, what a Savior!
    V4
    He was lifted up to die;
    "It is finished" was his cry;
    Now in heaven exalted high:
    Hallelujah, what a Savior!
    V5
    When he comes, our glorious King,
    All his ransomed home to bring,
    Then anew this song we'll sing:
    Hallelujah, what a Savior!

    This song brings me to tears and helps me turn my heart to Him. I just love it. What a glorious day when we see Him, in His glory. Yes, we will shout to Him, "Hallelujah, what a Savior!"

    My family grew up with this music. My older brother had dementia. When he couldn’t remember our names, but when a hymn was was played he sang with the music. He never forgot his God!

    Lovely hymn and wonderful hymn writer. Beautifully presented and sung on this occasion! Takes me back decades to my teenage years in a Baptist Church in Liverpool, England! Much water has passed under the bridge since then but ... I can still repeat with gratitude - 'Hallelujah, what a Saviour'! With thanks and Christian Greetings. Curly - Liverpool, England Veteran!

    I grew up listening to this timeless hymn at home, and in the Baptist Church back in Cameroons!!! And I keeping singing it tell today.
    I’d say with great confidence… there are very few Christian hymns like this which encapsulate the story of God’s perfect Grace and Redemption for mankind through His Blessed and only Son - Jesus, the Christ!
    Dear Luke, thank you for tell us the story of this exceptional composer and the remarkable (yet, short) life he lived…
    Your accounts explains the connection these two musical giants (=Philip P. Bliss and I. D. Sankey) and now explains to me… how this song got into I.D. Sankey’s collection of hymns… A treasured hymn book!
    …a reclaimed, rebel sinner... "Sealed my pardon with his Blood: *Hallelujah, What a Savior*".
    Again, thanks for the brilliant account, Luke! Keep this up.

    I hear the phrase "Man of Sorrows" and I'm right in the middle of Isaiah 53. It's the gospel 700 years BEFORE Jesus!

    I love Philip Paul Bliss! He wrote the tune for It Is Well With My Soul. He was from Pennsylvania (as am I). My favorite Hymn by him is Brightly Beams Our Father’s Mercy.♥️

    Also known as “ Hallelujah, what a Savior “and I absolutely love Hymns of Grace version where you get a short précis by the singer, and I love the cello’s sonorous sound. Please check it out Luke, and I’m loving your backstory of the hymns. May He bless and keep you.

    A very beautiful, inspiring hymn; I love it.
    It's more frequently sung during the Lenten season...
    I have been singing it since childhood .
    In my church's hymnal the first line of v.4 reads: "Lifted up, was He to die,"
    I vaguely remember hearing the hymn being sung , and beginning with "Hallelujah! What a Saviour!"
    Thanks for the history of the hymn

    Luke, I have really enjoyed you during the day. It really helps me keep focus on what a great God we have that cares for us.
    It keeps me focus not only what Jesus have done for my sin, but also has He cares for me on a daily basis.

      Lifted up for me to die, It is finished was His cry
      Is how I know this verse and like it so too. It is a wonderful song that I heard being sung in other denominational churches though it was not in our denominational hymnal. I did sing it for special music in our Church one Sabbath and it was very well received. I also shared Mr.Bliss's story. So sad and tragic.

    It's entirely new to me, never heard it before in either Anglican or RC Church. It's not in our current hymnbook either. Nonetheless, I like it. On first impression the tune is a bit "plodding" but the words are great. Thank you for that.

    Thank you. I love the words Hallelujah, what a saviour. Hallelujah because it ends on Jah which is a name referring to God. And Jesus is our saviour. The fact the we don't have to feel sick about our sins anymore and that He took them away resonates with me and makes me so happy.
