The thing is that the activists don't understand is that in the wild most of those animals wouldn't live longer than a couple of years. Most would die being ripped apart by wolves, bears, or some other predator. Those animals live longer happier lives living on a farm than they ever would in the wild.
No one is asking them to go in the wild, just to not be killed.
Happier lives? Please watch some videos of farm investigations and you will see that animals on factory farms have the worst lives imaginable. The animals are only here because humans breed 80 billion of them in to existence every year. So as the consumption of animal products declines, so will the amount of animals being bred in to existence. They will slowly die out. The last few could always go to sanctuaries. So they wouldn’t die in the wild. They wouldn’t be here going through hell.

Over 70 billion livestock (mainly chickens, cows and pigs) are killed each year. Over a trillion marine animals are killed each year. A crop field does not kill more people than we're currently slaughtering. Even if it did, we'd reduce the amount of animals killed on the crop fields if we stopped animal consumption, since animals are also fed crops. The quote assumes that livestock (the vast majority of whom are factory farmed, at least in the developed world) get their nutrition from grass and the like, which is not the case.
Also, when humans eat an animal, they only get a tenth of the nutrition the animal consumed prior to being slaughtered. Animals are the middlemen, who consume significantly more than they give nutritionally.

But how? The meat we eat isn't hunted but rather farmed, detached from ecosystems. Animals live because we breed them into existence for their flesh, skin, and milk. We wouldn't breed them anymore after the world stopped meat and dairy consumption & leather usage.

Of course you're just trying to make a living. From what I understand, farmers generally don't take pleasure in the slaughter, but to them it's a job that needs to be done. You have to understand that for vegans, this is a problem of morality, which is why they're so insistent about it. You can always change professions. If you still want to do farming work, then you can grow crops instead of working with livestock.

@@fahrenheighhe number of animals killed for crops is astronomical, and into the hundreds of billions of not trillions if you count the insects pesticides (yes even in organic farms which do use “natural pesticides” too) kill.
As far as the crops used to feed animals, animals eat crop waste and byproducts of human food consumption. When farmers grow corn for humans, the stock it chopped down and mulched to separate it from the ears. The wheat is threshed to separate it from the chaff and stocks, and those become animal feed, as humans cannot consume grass.
98% of the soybean oil produced here is used for human consumption, and the soybean meal is a “waste”. That waste becomes protein for animal feed.
There are also different grades for grains. Several times a crop fails to produce a high enough quality yield to meet human food consumption. The result is that it becomes used for animal feed. All of this food would be produced regardless if it was fed to animals. The difference is, as animal feed, we can at least convert it into edible food in the form of meat. Even WHO has acknowledged in recent publications that 80% of animal feed comes from waste byproducts of human food. The other 30% is almost entirely the result of product that doesn’t meet human food grade. The myth that we could feed the world on crops grown for livestock is born of lack of experience actually farming, which I have.
The fact is, nearly half the land used in agriculture is not viable to produce crops for humans, and as such can only grow livestock. If we eliminate them from agriculture, we don’t end up with more land and more crops, but less, as we also now have no fertilizer to grow crops with apart from that which is made by fossil fuels, which are the real contributor to greenhouse gas emissions as well. Livestock only emit what they can take in (second law of thermodynamics), which means it comes entirely from the plants they eat. This natural cycle isn’t considered for emissions, hence we don’t measure how much is released by deer, moose, elk, bison, etc., in the wild. The only emissions they get which come from plants that lead to increases in CO2 is from the carbon that is added by means of fertilizers not produced from animal waste: fossil fuels.
I would encourage you to actually come and visit a farm. It isn’t remotely like what you’ve been led to believe.

@James James pigs have a fairy loud scream. In my corner of the world it's tradition for (at least) a pig to be slaughtered every winter. So, they're being castrated in the spring to prepare for it. Every spring the town is filled with the screams of pigs being castrated.. you get used to it.

I’m old enough to remember when farms were much smaller, often run by generations of the same family and those families really cared about the wellbeing of their animals. Mainly free range and grass fed. But, that was before the U.K. became wildly over populated, causing demand to outstrip the supply that such farms could provide. So, perhaps cramming an endless amounts of people into a small but fertile island, resulting in building housing on farm land and the need to produce record amounts of food wasn’t such a genius idea. 2024 - animal misery high, food’s nutritional value low and gut related illnesses (yes, including mental health issues) sky high. Who’d have guessed? Oh well, squeeze up, animals n humans, room for MILLIONS more. 😶
