”The hardening” you mention is actaually a suface treatment allowing the gears to get a perfect surface when running in the gears. The result is the shiny surface you see which create perfect conditions for an oil film in the gear mesh. This gives a long gear life with a minimum of wear. These gears are case hardened and the depth is not affected by the running in process.

This is the most reliable sterndrive for Volvo Penta, better than other dph series
yes... but now they are selling the new DP-I, not a fan.
