Thoughts about 'Honey'!! [SCANDAL - Koisuru Universe (live)] FIRST TIME (live-)reaction!

So I just heard one (their latest) SCANDAL song so far, but this album was the winner out of 8 albums basically so I'm excited to get into 'Honey' and see why a lot of you like this so much and also to just explore a new band! :D

This presentation was made for the MTV program "Storytellers", where its format is for recognized artists to perform live in an intimate space with the public, while they talk about the birth of their songs and their thoughts about them and Scandal was the first artist chosen to produce it in Japan.
The original MV was directed that way because of the message they wanted to give, that they had grown up leaving aside an image of 'good girls' and it could be said that they were going to create their music according to what they felt, the context would perhaps be better understood, knowing their beginnings where they played rock in school uniforms and their evolution until that date, that time they were highly criticized where everything was commented on about them.
Thank you for the reaction to this great album, maybe you could react to his first album 'Best Scandal' and thus see his school years and evolution, as they recommended it could also be 'Hello World' and then another of my favorites 'Kiss from the Darkness'.
A.M.D.K.J. is on the Kiss from the Darkness album. - IMHO one of their many A+ grade songs. It's an absolute monster hit. - So good!

I'm so glad you're realy enjoying SCANDAL, there is so much to listen to and discover. - Their songs are ones you can go back to time and again, there is always something to listen out for, or just relax and let SCANDAL entertain you in their own unique way. - Great band.
Those type of plexiglass plates are (from what I have seen/heard) used so the other mics (or musicians in some cases) don't pick up the drum sounds. Sometimes it's not a full shield, but only small ones placed in front of symbals, sometimes it's like this. It's a completely different style of music, they are a Symphonic Death Metal band, but a good example of this in Septicflesh's "Infernus Sinfonica MMXIX" DVD/Blu-ray where they were set around the drummer (Krimh) because he was placed in the middle of an orchestra and it would otherwise disturb the orchestra or I guess mess up the mics for them (they had over 100 people on stage). I don't remember if Krimh mentioned the use of the plates on his channel, but I remember someone explaining it somewhere.
Makes total sense, I've just never seen it before 😅
I think Mami Retired the Melt Icecream Mamicaster Strat after this show, I don't recall seeing it ever again after this and I do know Haruna Retired the Squier Glitter Skull Teley she is playing here around this time frame. . As other have said this was recorded for MTV storytellers, but it was all their 11th Anniversary concert.
You should check out "Freedom Fighters", a song that's not on this album but was included as a bonus track on their compilation album released just before Honey.
Hey B- Thank you SO MUCH for doing these reactions to SCANDAL's Honey. I do reallly love this band and their diversity of styles of music. Do keep in mind that during these reactions, you repeatedly stated that you were surprised by how different the songs were from one to the next... and I can tell you that if and when you continue with reactions to SCANDAL, you will continue to find their diversity of music impressive. The glass plates are sound-shielding. At least what they're designed for and I've no reason to think they're being used differently here.
Overall I enjoyed Honey more than the other Scandal album I know, Kiss from the Darkness. The latter might actually be more energetic, but it also has more production on the vocals (which I don't like), and I think the guitars might shine more on Honey. I'm happy that I can now at least appreciate Scandal, given their place in Japanese music history.

This performance was filmed for MTV's Storytellers special. I would guess the glass had something to with sound, either the venue or the live audience. It was a much more subdued performance.
As far as the song, I think it's pretty good and a great closer. We didn't get to see your reaction to the video and the infamous "kiss" which some fans lost their minds over, and I felt was a bit gratuitous and fan service, but whatever. I think Honey is a decent album, but not one of my favorite by Scandal. I really like the first three songs, with "Take Me Out" being one of my top 5 Scandal songs.
If you're going to review another Scandal album, I would probably go to the next one "Kiss From the Darkness" next, but definitely go back to their earlier stuff as well, just to see what it's like. Their first album (strangely titled Best Scandal) has a bit of punky edge as well.
Finally I'm going to go out on a limb, and recommend a band called Akai Koen (赤い公園). You probably won't get a lot of requests for them, but they are my second favorite Japanese band. A bit more alternative and jazzy, they were contemporaries of Scandal. Unfortunately, they broke up in 2021, after their guitarist took her life in October of 2020. Still, some great music and I miss them.

The MV threw me off a little, not because they kissed but I just felt that more sexualised image didn't really fit the music. But I'm here mostly for the music anyway 😋

Akai Ko-en was a great band and Maisa a brilliant songwriter. So many variations and experimentation in her songs.
Now, you should do Scandal first album and their latest album to see how much they grow. And I think you would enjoy their first album Best Scandal
They are really great during their live performances.
Remember, Scandal songs before 2019 use only live versions to avoid copyright infringement. Songs after 2019 under Scandal own label “her” you can use both the music video or live versions.

Yes indeed. Live thay are amazing. - True to the original songs, but with that edge you only get live. They are full of fun, their warmth and personalities shine through, and the crowd laps it up. Any time they are in the country, I'm going to be there, front and centre. ❤
Best Scandal, and Hello World as certainly the two albums I would suggest, as they are tied for me as the best SCANDAL album, and Best Scandal has my favorite SCANDAL song, "Scandal Baby"

I think you may enjoy 2014 - Hello World, their recent albums are more poppy even tho they still do have some great rock songs on it
Cool facts about Honey: All songs except Mado wo Aketara (Tomomi) were composed by Mami and Rina (Usually Mami does the music and Rina the lyrics) Oh! No! is all Mami, Midnight City is all Rina.
This composing partnership has given birth to the best scandal songs and are still going strong on their new music.
I guess you could call me a Mami fan then 😋 that's the lead guitarist as well right?
