In 1964, my 7th grade English teacher, Mr. Jack Coty taught this poem to our class. It so moved me that I memorized it back then and even now. more than 55 years later, I can still recite it and its meaning has grown far deeper at this point in my life.

Dear Robert, I have over almost a lifetime, committed to memory almost every poem you have created, except those story poems, far too long to remember. I also taught my grandchildren your poems to recite to their parents, demonstrating to them how clever their children were! My firstborn granddaughter Emily, never forgot Stopping by Woods, and taught her three sons that poem as soon as they could memorize.! My 12 grandchildren, with their little heads stuffed with Robert Frost. They have done me proud.

He wrote this when he was depressed and kind of contemplating suicide one night and this poem were his thoughts and he didn't write it down till later it was him coming full circle in his mind in these words and finally the end of the poem obviously shows that he decided against offing himself. I am sure that this is not anything that people who love Robert Frost don't already know but just in case I wanted to share. It really isn't a whimsical little poem about a winner night lol

Found this today and was moved to tears. I'm not usually keen on hearing poets recite their own poetry as some seem to use a " poetry reciting " voice a bit like when my Mum read out the deaths in the newspaper but Robert Frost is just incredible here. He is chatty and kind like his poems but the strength is like a punch in the solar plexus. I never thought , having known his poetry since the early sixties, that I would see and hear him speaking it.

I have never been one for poetry, mainly because I couldn't recite a poem by memory. As time moved on, I realized the use of poetry was indeed more value than riches. I have never been able to name any poet's name, however, of late I have found it soothing to the soul and mind. Now I find poetry a source of comfort especially complex poetry that pull at the heart strings and bring tears to your eyes. Thank you to the poets who bring peace to a broken heart, at least even for a few hours.

STOPPING BY WOODS ON A SNOWY EVENING
Whose woods these are I think I know.
    His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
