The INSANE Prime of Randy Johnson

  • Randy Johnson, AKA The Big Unit, is one of the best pitchers in baseball history. He and Greg Maddux share a record that no other pitcher has approached! Randy’s high octane fastball, devastating slider, and 3/4 arm slot dominated hitters throughout his 22 year career. His imposing presence standing at 6 foot 10 rattled not just humans, but an unlucky bird as well. He has the second most Cy Youngs in baseball history, and led the league in ERA on 4 separate occasions. As he aged, he seemingly got better and better. Mid to late 30s Randy Johnson’s run of dominance is something that few pitchers can relate to.
Players relevant to the video: Greg Maddux, Vida Blue, Mark McGwire, Joe Kerrigan, Rick Williams, Tim Raines, Nolan Ryan, Jack McDowell, John Kruk, Larry Walker, Roger Clemens, Kevin Brown, Chan Ho Park, Pedro Martinez, Gaylord Perry, Roy Halladay, Curt Schilling, Max Scherzer, Sandy Koufax, Mariano Rivera, Luis Gonzalez

Reflecting back, I remember being glued to The ABC Coverage of that 1 game playoff in 1995 to give us OUR 1st ever Division Crown and man oh man vrings tears to my eyrs. I still own a sealed casette tape of the miraculous 1995 Seattle Mariners Season with Dave Neihouse's Voice doing play by play. I'm happy he went in as a Diamondbacks Player. Mariners front office traded him for dumb reasons but in the end we wouldn't have kept Johnson though and Amazing what he did! Excellent Video. You've hit upon most of his career highlights, but I was surprised you didn't mention how Randy was so embarrassed by losing the 19-strikeout game in 1997 that he went out on August 8 and struck out 19 batters again, this time making sure he shut out the White Sox.

He's my favorite ever. Baseball, wrestling, actors, Randy Johnson is truly the purest hero a kid could have. I have such admiration and respect for him. And spoiler alert, his prime was literal insanity. Randy Johnson was the best pitcher during the era of juiced balls, steroids being used by guys who were already the best hitters, and he did the most dominant work while he played in the same division that claimed Colorado when everyone in their lineups were hitting 30 bombs and hitting over .300. The Big Unit is the greatest pitcher to ever throw a ball in baseball history. My nostalgia and rose tinted glasses makes it so my mind cannot be changed 😎🤣

This is why it used to drive me crazy when people would say Randy always choked come playoff time. Yeah, he had some bad outings but some people ignore he had some great outings and playoffs but got no run support. Wasn't until the Dbacks won the World Series, in which he was great again, that this finally went away and even some of his "bad" outings were 7 innings 3 run games.

I disagree. I think peak RJ was 1995 or 1997 Seattle.
Back then, there was a noticable offensive talent gap between the leagues, (plus the DH difference) Quality pitchers often got better going AL to NL, and often experienced a dip in their numbers going from NL to AL.
I do wonder if his 1999 to 2002 numbers would have been as outrageous if he stayed in the AL. I think they would still have been great, but not quite as mind boggling as his desert gunslinger years.

      Thank you!
And to answer your question, it takes roughly 50-55 hours, as crazy as that sounds. Research typically takes a full day (sometimes more depending on the player). Making graphics and editing takes around 4-5 full days if I work all day.

@@ousamaabdu794 It gets to be a lot at times, but I love doing it so it doesn't feel like work! It's fulfilling to give these players the attention they deserve and do so in an entertaining way. It always shocks me that there's not many "career bio" videos out there on YT for players such as Randy.
I appreciate you for supporting the channel, if it wasn't for people like you, I wouldn't be able to do this in the first place!

It's good to see Kevin Brown showing up a few times in this video. He's one of the most underrated pitchers, it'd be great to see a video highlighting his career. If it wasn't for Kevin Brown using steroids, he'd be one of the biggest snubs for the Hall of Fame.
