  • In this 2016 full-length C. Vision release, we cover the east end of Montana Rail Link's system between Jones Junction and Helena, Montana. The 1st and 2nd Subdivisions were brimming with activity during our visits, and you'll see an incredible variety of trains and locomotives across this territory. In addition to the mainline, the 5th, 6th, and 13th Subdivision branch lines are also covered. Local and mixed freights, grain, coal, ballast, and even MRL passenger trains are all included in this two-hour presentation.
    MRL's fleet of SD45 locomotives are seen in BNSF lease service, as well as working MRL's own freight trains. The sights and sounds of these 3600 horsepower locomotives powering heavy trains over Bozeman Pass and Winston Hill will be something you won't soon forget. We have also included some behind the scenes views of several SD45s being scrapped in Livingston by Progress Rail in May of 2014. Additional MRL locomotive models seen in this video include: SW1500, GP9, GP35, GP40, SD35, SDP40, SD40-2, SD40-2XR, and SD70ACe.

    I grew up in Montana, so many of those shots from places I remember from many drives between Helena and Billings. Also nice that, for the most part, the track and the interstate parallel each other from Billings to Three Forks, and then the highway from Three forks to Helena. Great shots, great memories.

Up here we are slowly getting rid of those signals. It’s too bad. I’ve only found a few places that still use that signal set up. Catch them when you can before they are all gone. Where all of those engines on at Reed Point? I counted 7.

Meaning the lead unit and the GP39-2 were not being used for power. When the train roars by east of Bozeman later in the video, it is a lot easier to tell which units are operating.

    I head to western Montana on month long fishing trips about every 3 to 5 years. When the rivers and lakes get crowded out on the weekends, I pack up my fishing gear and head to the tracks to watch trains. I've photographed and videoed many of the 20 cylinder units in the past, including the F's. I have a nice shot from 2012 of an F-45 leading a GM train breaking out of the morning fog on the through girder bridge east of Ravenna - with the then still intact old Milwaukee bridge in the background. When I'm in MRL territory, I much prefer setting up camp or spending the night in my vehicle parked next to the tracks over any hotel room. The night time shots really are close to the same experience for me. The look and sound of the turbo EMD's is way better than the GE's that are so common on the High Line.

      Montana can provide some truly amazing experiences for all of us. MRL just happens to parallel I-90, the Yellowstone, Missouri, Flathead, and Clark Fork rivers, and passes through many of the larger cities in Montana. Outdoor recreation and some casual MRL railfanning are a match made in heaven. Hope that you continue to enjoy these trips for many years to come!

    That is so very sad!they may not know it but they are going to need those sd45s because there is no guarantee that those sd 70 aces are not going to fail!the sd45 is o e of the most reliable locomotives in the world and it will pull anything you tie to it.this girl has proven herself time and time again, and decade after decade!it is really sad to see them being cut up like this.i have seen locomotives come and go, but this locomotive deserves to be saved!quick!some body!save these sd45s!at least 5 if them.

    • @torquetrain8963
      @torquetrain8963 Před 2 lety +3

      I totally agree with you. It seems like the majority of mechanically inclined conservative working class men are obsessed with diesel pickup trucks which are a puny weak toy compared to an sd45. A dodge ram cummins diesel 6.7 liter is probably just over 400 cubic inch and maxes out around 1,000 lb ft of torque. The sd45 has a 12,900 cubic inch turbocharged 2 stroke v-20 which was rated at 3600 ho, but the sd45x put out 4,200 hp. I imagine the lb ft of torque must be approx 35,000 lb ft at a mere 900 rpm. This nation needs railways and apart from rural areas is entirely way too car centric. To all the tough guys, just a word of advice- your pickup truck will NEVER be a locomotive. Stop trying to intimidate and impress people. I am a conservative, pro life, pro gun, and pro rail . We need more locomotives and less pickup trucks. Build infrastructure and stop Muddin and build a high speed rail system. We are light years behind Japan, Europe, and China when it comes to high speed rail.Make America great again by building a real balanced transportation system and stand up against the automotive and airline barons. Railways built this country.And to all my fellow conservatives who think trains are for commies, I have a question for you: Were the pioneers who built the transcontinental railways in America commies?

    • @CVisionContributor
      @CVisionContributor Před 2 lety +3

      The SD45s were certainly there when they needed them! Very useful locomotives, especially with how well MRL maintained them. Still two left, and doing pretty well for being over 50 years old!

    • @trainknut
      @trainknut Před 2 lety +4

      As much as I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment, they should have kept the SD45s on for emergency power and local duties at least... I feel like it's a bit unfair to the SD70ACe to imply that the SD70s haven't proven themselves capable machines.
      The earliest SD70s are over 30 years old now with no signs of slowing down, sure a lot has changed between those SD70s and the ACEs and Tier 4s we see now, but fundamentally they are the same engine under the hood, not to mention the extra horsepower and modernization which has made the earlier 645-powered engines obsolete in mainline service.(unfortunately)
      obviously no one can see the future, but honestly in my opinion, the SD70 will almost certainly go on to be remembered as the successor to the EMD legacy left behind by famous 1st and 2nd gen units like the GP9, F7, SD40, and of course, SD45.
      In 30 years when some new generation of power comes along and blows the GEVOs and ACEs off the class 1s like they took over for the SD45, there will still be some SD70Ms hauling freight on shortlines, and they'll probably hold on in service as long as the SD40-2s and GP9s have before them... with SD40-2s and GP9s themselves probably still having a good few decades in secondary service before they finally disappear for good.
      Unfortunately by that time the SD45 will be long gone, and it's a damn shame, because their sister units prove they've still got a lot of life left in them.

    • @CVisionContributor
      @CVisionContributor Před 2 lety +1

      We agree that all generations of locomotives have/had their place. It's great that many railroads have kept older EMDs on their rosters for local and secondary duties. That's a great use for them. GEVOs and SD70-type units are incredible locomotives as well. They can pull the world, and offer a significant cost savings to railroads, both through unit reduction, and DPU capability -allowing for longer and heavier trains. Also, wanted to clarify that MRL still rosters four SD45s as of October 2021. However, only two are in service: 346 and 355. The two stored in Livingston are 351 and 382. Maybe someone else on here knows more about their status?

    • @trainknut
      @trainknut Před 2 lety +2

      @@CVisionContributor Last I heard MRL was trying to sell 382, I would assume they plan on selling them all eventually, otherwise they'll probably be scrapped like the rest.
      Obviously the ideal choice is to sell the remaining SD45s to either preservationists or a railroad which has a use for 20 cylinder power.(RBMN for example?)
      Personally I'm still mad they scrapped all the old SP and PRR units, which would have been invaluable museum engines.

      We understand. This video didn't have captions when first produced in 2016, and it wasn't updated to include them. We're sorry about that. CC option is a great idea though. Thank you.

    This video doesn't show the full trains.

      Hello. Our videos don’t always show the full trains. There’s a lot of content that needs to be included in each project, so we have to ensure that each scene is edited down to allow for more trains per video. Thank you for watching.

      Ha! You noticed that. The engineer was just showing off his “MRL muscle” for the camera. He was being friendly.
