  • How to Chain Up a Big Rig Truck - Dave does a demonstration of how to chain up with a set of singles: A step by step basic demo.
    Chaining up isn't a fun job, but it is something drivers should know how to do, just in case.
    Most often, it's better to wait out a mandatory chaining.
    By the time you install your chains, drive slowly with them on, the trucks that didn't chain up, will arrive at the same time as you at the bottom of the hill.
    Still a skill you should be familiar with as a professional driver.

    As someone who chains up 6 sets daily through icy and muddy months (4 drive wheels with triples, a steer and a trailer), it's much easier to drape the chain over the tire, tails infront of the tire just touching the ground, then pull forward. If you tie a small piece of hazard marking tape to the boomers, you can see from your mirror how far to pull forward (until the boomer is sitting at 2 o'clock). The steer chain can be a bit trickier, I generally tilt the hood forward to toss that one on.
    Also if you're using chains in mud or ice, make sure your truck atleast has a lockable interaxle diff. I've seen a lot of highway trucks with their chained up wheels sitting still while the unchained wheels are spinning.

    one suggestion, when attaching the spider bungie, you should have the hooks facing outward, not inward, as the hooks may rub and damage the outside of your tires, if you have the chains on for any length of time

    That was great, Brother Dave. I enjoyed the beautiful Winter day and blazing Sun in the background. Also, it's cool when you can park your rig in your driveway in a residential zone.
    I view chains as emergency equipment and do my best never to use them.

    Notice, if you will Dave is explaining this procedure is performed on a sunny day and dry ground. Not the usual conditions that require use of chains. Try it with wet gloves and ice melting from the trailer running down the back of one's neck.

    Make it look easy especially when there’s no trailer over your fifth wheel. I find it easier to drape them on all four wheels then do a slight rollup and then you can take up the slack. Some guys go and use a 4 x 4 block to drive up with the inside duels and try to chain up with it in the air. I used to be good enough to do a full set of chains from the time I pull the parking break till the time I left 32 minutes. That was three axles worth. Can’t say I’m as fast as we all get older. Now I I don’t chain as a company frowns on the practice. They just say if it’s that bad park it.

  • @Vickvineager
    @Vickvineager Před 5 lety +2

    I use to have to chain up when I worked for the state & man you are by far a better teacher than the ones at the state. They taught us to throw the chains over the tire, then back up til the bunched up chain was in between the duals & then pull the slack up & connect the hooks, it was any mans guess as to if everything went well or you wouldn’t have enough slack to pull the link to the hook. Worse was chaining up with a load material in the body & blinding snow & wind, or a cross link or 2 would snap & slap against the body ribs, then you’d have to replace the cross link onsite. But a great video nonetheless. As the other guy below me mentioned we use to cheat too by putting a block of wood under the inside & backing over it to jack up the axles which made chaining up a breeze. But those days are long gone for me. Don’t miss ‘em that’s for sure.

    • @SmartTrucking
      @SmartTrucking  Před 5 lety

      A guy sent me a set of ramps for chaining the other day, kind of a replacement for the blocks. Kinda cool. I'll be doing a video with them in the spring, when I don't have to lie in the snow to hook the chains up!

  • @patrickroach7289

    A cattle hauler shared a hint with me. A single chain on a single tire on the locked axle will get you up a hill quickly. No drama for a quick fix.

  • @raisin37

    It's nice to share the road with drivers like you. Still hoping to run across you.
    These are not my suggestions but feel they may be useful to some and am curious to your opinion.
    A 4x4/4x6 board under the inside tires allows room to hang and mount without moving the truck.
    Hang the spider bungee by the 10 and 2 positions and stretch the 6 in place then reverse upward 4 & 8, lastly 12. Balanced approach but I contend the bungee will "self adjust" at the first bump.
    Thanks again for what you do.

    • @SmartTrucking
      @SmartTrucking  Před 9 lety +1

      raisin37 Yup, the boards will work. I even have one friend that dumps his air, then jacks up the axles to install triples. Dave

    Those octopus bungies are awesome, i carry 4 of them and a bunch of extra bungies too. Another thing i have is one of those rubber mats they put under the big paper rolls i haul sometimes. You can lay it on the ground and lay or sit on it so you dont have to roll around in the snow and slush

  • @sisutrucks
    @sisutrucks Před 9 lety +7

    have to use them from time to time and we need to carry 7, we also need to have winter tires on all axles of the rig now. a lot of closed roads due to foreign trucks not up to driwing in Norway getting stuck and sliding all over. chains cant be too tight on either or they can eat into the tire, bungees we dont use and only my light chains have the quick fasteners. a good tip is to test if they fit when hanging them on the truck for the season. its not fun when you need them and are to short hehe. but if you have the time to stop and wait for better times that mite be the smarter move, running with chains cost much money.

    Great instructional video Dave we use our chains a bit but not and much as you would think for plowing our worst roads for us is dirt roads after a rain in the middle of winter they have a heavy snow and ice pack on them because we never use any salt on them salt will ruin a gravel road around here they are made of sandstone and go to muck in the spring if you salt them. I run a cable chain on my steel axle and two ice pick singles on the front drive axle i know you can't because of your fenders but in the front they chew up the ice for the second axle to get a little traction just a little tip for new guys and girls. I wish I would have done a video the last time I had them on.

    On the fence about pursuing a CDL when I retire. Would love to have this man, or someone like him as a trainer.
    Live in the northeast, and consider myself to be observant, yet I cannot recall ever seeing/noticing a semi with chains. I'll have to make a concerted effort to look for them this winter. Granted, where I am, it does not snow "all that much", so it's very possible that I have legit never seen a semi running them.

    you did that without moving the truck?? I drive flatdeck 3 tons with 40' trailers and also only chain up one tire. A tow truck driver suggested putting little wooden ramps underneath the inner tire to lift off the ground. been working pretty good for me.

  • @timtripp4222

    If only one tire is chained, don't drive on gravel! inside tire holds up weight, outside spins out! So, do you know if the turn out is paved? Be safer, use double.

    I've watched a few videos on how to chain up and they all show 1 single chain being applied.
    Can I chain up just the 4 outside drive tires?

    • @SmartTrucking
      @SmartTrucking  Před 7 lety +3

      Depends on what they're calling for, minimum chains means outside tires, full chain up means duals and in some states a trailer axle. Sometimes it's easier just to wait for the plows. Dave

    Hauling horses down to Delmar one time and the CHP was trying to park me because they wanted “4 tires” chained and I had triple trigs on the front. He couldn’t understand that I had 4 tires chained up until I made him bend down and look. The condition of the roads it was laughable they were even making me chain. Unfortunately hauling show horses the option to stop is not there or the horses will go lame or the studs will need more tranq which is just as bad.

    That's cool, I've always pulled the truck forward a bit to clasp the chains together. Thanks for the info and video. One thing I do different is I put my spider bungee in the tensioner pullies so I know they will stay closed. What's your opinion on that Dave?

    • @SmartTrucking
      @SmartTrucking  Před 9 lety

      G G good idea on the tension clamps. I know alot of guys pull forward and then fasten up their chains, I was always just too lazy to move the truck and half the time when I did I either moved it too far or not far enough. I quit running in the mountains a few years ago now and I miss the scenery but not the chaining. drive safe dave

      Smart-Trucking.com well its good to see someone's off the hook for chains but as a logger in BritishColumbia,I'm not. the worst thing about throwing chains is the sound of them falling off after you rolled too far. specially if it's 4 sets of triples. so simple of a fix,a roll of bright colored , dollar store, tree marking tape, easy to see and makes peeling the chains off easier. too. and for those who don't get it, tie a piece on by the hooks.
