    Awsome conversion, explained perfectly for a cheap simple swap, I think the extra positive caster might be a good thing for highway cruising but I see the droop down on the front pinion is very detrimental to the uni joint unless CV's could be adapted.

    • @HaydnKamp
      @HaydnKamp  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I’ve seen some incredibly scary angles on lower uni joints and somehow they’ve held up. Caster wedges or front drop hanger will help. Also running leaf retainers help keep the axle from doing wild things at full droop.

    2ndly you mentioned "high steer" @ 25:55 I am guessing that is where the tie rod assembly is above the leaf pack as apposed to them being bellow the leaf pack as they are in my 1981 Hilux. So I want to do this conversion so it is better protected & I can delete the adjustable torque rod.
    I searched far & wide online & have seen some intensive modifications & fortifications to the chassis, relocation of the steering box, even upgrading the steering box, to achieve having the tie rod assembly above the leafs.
    I lack confidence in knowledge in the area of suspension, may be I am stuck because maybe to me it looks more complicated than it is. Also my research skills are not the best, probably causing me to look in all the wrong places.
    I have seen some methods that seem to conflict & some aspects that seem to be unnecessary to the conversion. I am wondering if I do the "IFS rears in the front" conversion, that doing the high steer conversion should be all bolt on upgrading the necessary bits from a LN106?
    Do you know of a resource or tutorial I can watch or read that will walk me through how to do it or @ least give me a reliable parts list? If you have read this, thank for your time & if you want to give me your thoughts let me know if there is anything way I can return the favor.
    Love the videos of yours I have watched so far & your nifty thrifty style, I did judge, but it was positive judgement, cheap flex that works is smart, it is not like you are being "American" about it & have no idea about the differences or the limitations either before or after you "Thelma & Louise-ed your rig.
    If only Thelma & Louise new about the joys of cheap flex, they would still be alive today!!! :0)...

      I’m unsure of a tutorial or videos on high steer to be honest. I’ve actually never searched for one 😅. When I did the high steer on my ln106 I just found photos online and kinda wung it and it turned out pretty bang on, I just mounted the steering box as far forward as possible and cycled the steering and suspension a lot until I was happy with its position.
      I used an ifs steering box, trailgear flat pitman arm, steering shaft spacer, tm fab steering box plate kit, and the high steer components where from Trailgear.

    . ...3rdly & Lastly on the issue of adjusting castor, rather than hit the wall with the limitations of the wedges, would shorter banana shackles bring the castor back, I don't know perhaps they don't do shorter ones & that would cause them to foul???
    I did see that Buds Customs do a set & @ 135mm pin to pin I wondered if they were shorter? They are more expensive but they are greaseable & @ my age I don't get as much nipple action as I use too!

    • @HaydnKamp
      @HaydnKamp  Před 2 měsíci +1

      A better solution is to do what I’ve done with my ln106 and fit a dropped front crossmember that spacers the front leaf mounts down to compensate for the longer shackles and also give clearance to the pitman arm nut.
      It drives very well without wedges as caster is closer to factory now.

      @@HaydnKamp Yeah that does sound better in more ways than one. I have not seen that part of a LN106 up close enough to know really what you mean.
      From images I have seen I know some of the structure is a little different @ the bottom of the radiator.
      I think there is a brace member under the radiator that bolts to the rail ends? Is that what you mean?
      Or is it a home made member,
      or something off the shelf after market? What is the conversion called?
      Leaf drop member?
      I suspect the front leaf mounts on my RN46 are different to the LN106.
      Guessing, here that you removed that bolt on factory member, if that is what I think it is (& what you meant?) .
      Make up a member from scratch tying it into the rail ends with the mounts & chassis rail ends.
      So I will cut the mounts off & locate them lower making sure the weld contact foot print is the same if not more than the factory position Does that sound right?

    Hi mate I have just taken delivery of my father‘s year 2000 Hilux SR5 twin cab. It has the original chrome wheels on it and I would like to put something on it with a bit more attitude but certainly not as beefy as yours. I am absolutely clueless when it comes to rim sizes and tyres but I do like those basic black steel rims that you have could you please advise rim type, tire size etc For me . Truck is just going to be used as a town runner no serious four-wheel driving or at least if I go off-road it’ll just be dirt roads etc. So nothing extreme. I don’t need flex and all that. thank you.

      Also you have to think about legality too. Stops a lot of the fun unfortunately 😅

    Hi Hayden. This video is a gem & well communicated.
    I was hoping you might offer some insight to my situation. I have a lot to ask, & I am not an internet slut expecting to pick your brains for nothing. So I would be happy to compensate you in some way for advice. Perhaps I could send you some dollars via paypal or direct debit.
    I have a 1981 Hilux 4wd RN46, with a 253 V8 engine swap in it. I have put 33s on it & have been wanting to move the front axial forward to clear the guard
    As best as I can tell, the chassis is the same & straight. But I have noticed figment issues with the high clearance gearbox cross member, I went with a Kinselas one & ended up modifying it & I got it to fit neatly.
    But the weird head scratcher was when I bought new 2 inch lift leaf suspension & the rear sat down significantly.
    I uses a Superoo 50mm spacer blocks kit which corrected it but I could see nothing that should of caused it to be the case.
    I even went to a suspension specialist, it was them that fitted the blocks, they were stumped too. I dare say the blocks were not the best solution I am guessing & not cheap.
    The only thing I could think of was maybe there was a mix up with the rear leaf's with the manufacture, but they look right & the part numbers match.
    So with wanting to do the same upgrade you have, I am a bit worried about what I might be missing with the issues described above.
    The chassis rail is definitely not bent vertically, horizontally or even laterally...
    I guess it is probably difficult to say with out having the vehicle in front of you but if in the unlikely event you are reading this “word feast” what do you think?...

    • @HaydnKamp
      @HaydnKamp  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Definitely strange especially if you have the correct part number on the springs for the application, possibly a manufacturer mix up or the rear of the Ute is incredibly heavy?
      Spacer blocks work but I’m definitely not a fan of them

    • @leonkane8240
      @leonkane8240 Před 2 měsíci

      @@HaydnKamp There is no weight on the rear. I even have the spare mounted on the head board.
      The weight require to bent or flex the chassis that much asking the need of 50mm spacer blocks I think would make it noticeable, you would be able to see that stuff does not line up.
      The tray sits 90 degrees neat to the cab & the chassis
      I went through carefully & looked over the whole chassis, it is not nanometer perfect but I would say it would not be any more out than 30mm over the whole length.
      Of course I am guessing 30mm, the only way to know with any accuracy is to put it on an engineers table naked.
      I ran a straight edge along the rails, both sides are straight.
      She does pull to the left in the steering a little even after an alignment. I dare say many if not all of them do.
      So I dunno, it is a bit spooky.
      Thanks for bringing you brain to it!
