    Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!! I will be applying a lot of the same techniques for the raised beds I just built. But you sold me specifically on the elevated psi being sent to the beds before further pressure reduction, as well as a valve at each bed to throttle the water up or down for watering adjustments. I was planning on installing a blow-out at each bed to get the water out of the lines, ( with the assist of compressed air), but again agree with you that it might be better to disconnect and hang them up in a more controlled environment for the winter. Again, thanks!!!

    Great info. Thanks. I think I'll try the drip tape. The new boxes looked awesome. I did notice, in the latter part of the video, pressure treated wood used with the narrow and older boxes. Probably not a good idea, even if it was just used to tie the corrugated steel panels together. It wears off and mixes with the soils.

    • @HomesteadandChill
      @HomesteadandChill  Před měsícem

      Thank you so much and hopefully drip tape irrigation works out well for you. In regards to the other raised beds with pressure treated wood and corrugated steel, the previous owners were the ones who built them or had them built, we just inherited them. We haven't had the time nor the energy to replace them just yet but may do so in the future.

    Looks neat and competent. My hesitation is at the end of season if you want to refresh and turn the soil over it gets in the way and you have to disturb it and replace in back in place every year or season you turn the soil. I like how they work but will stick with hose and watering can for now as my beds are not large nor numberous. Your installation is really great looking.

    • @HomesteadandChill
      @HomesteadandChill  Před rokem

      We don't turn over our soil, we cut out our plants at the soil line and leave their roots in place to decompose and turn into organic matter. To amend our soil in between seasons, we sprinkle amendments over the top of the soil, lightly scratch it into the surface, add more compost on top for added mulch and we are good to go.

    I did same layout of drip system to tops of my beds.
    Mine though are 9” drip spacing with 9” separation per row within bed. Mine are 1g per hour emitter in loamy soil base with compost built above. Testing showed great spread of water horizontally and vertically.
    Soil really dictates rate and spacing.

I would need to use a raised platform with 50 gal water barrels on them to supply my water, my garden is about 20’ x 24’ , I am just concern about the height of the platform to make sure that all my plants get water . Would you have any idea on how high the platform need to be for this to work . Thanks for any ideas or improvements to my system to make it work . Thank you JimE.

    I'm so glad I found you on youtube! Many vids on creating raised garden beds, but you are the first that I found that discussed setting up drip irrigation..
    Question: what if I bury the drip tube into the bed? Say 6" I'm in NJ, this will save me having to take it out for the winter and for root veggies it might be better?

    • @HomesteadandChill
      @HomesteadandChill  Před rokem

      I am not sure if burying the drip tape only 6" is enough for a NJ winter. I believe the best practice for any drip irrigation system in cold climates is to clear all the tubing and valves of water before freezing weather hits, removing the irrigation system from the garden and storing them indoors through the winter will also extend the life of your irrigation system.
      Our drip tape is usually under an inch or so of mulch but it was left uncovered to illustrate the system and set up for this video.

      Hi there, so glad you found us and it's great to hear that you are finding our content helpful. We do get freezing conditions during the winter but usually not too bad. We live on the Central Coast of California, hardiness zone 9b.

    Helpful video! If we m using 1/2” drip line from the faucet, is there a 15 psi regulator for 1/2” in, 1/2” out?

    • @HomesteadandChill
      @HomesteadandChill  Před 2 lety

      You only need the 15 psi regulator if you are using drip tape in your beds. If you are using standard 1/2" drip tubing in your beds, you only need a 25 psi pressure reducer.
      We have found that you may need to use adapters to convert from 1/2" to 3/4" before converting back to 1/2". For more in depth information and other alterations you can make, check out our article on the topic:

    This is a very helpful video, thank you. I have a question. What is the purpose of the metal barrier?

    • @HomesteadandChill
      @HomesteadandChill  Před rokem

      That is metal edging that we used to outline our garden to delineate the space and create a border for our perennial plants that are planted along the fence line.

    Someone at a local nursery told me that pressure reducers need water flow or they may be damaged. Wondering if you heard anything like that and if so, would it be better to put the shutoff valve before the pressure reducer? Thx, and great video!

    if you arepvc to the beds - could you not have the 40 psi pressure reducer so you get better pressure in the longer runs - and then put the reducers on whereever you go to drip?

    • @HomesteadandChill
      @HomesteadandChill  Před měsícem

      We do have PVC running to each bed itself all coming off a valve which has a 40 psi regulator. Then in each be we have a 15 psi regulator to reduce the water pressure at each bed so it meets the psi requirements for our specific drip tape that we used.

    New subscriber. Such a great video. Gave me the confidence to jump in to putting in a full irrigation system. Appreciate the links. Questions: No plumbers tape is needed for the threaded fittings. Just hand tightening seals it well enough?

    Well well i started with your enormous story about the worms but have been bing watching you guys ever since! Great videos and very explanatory too! Question, is it not better to place the drip tape face down? So there is less evaporating ?

    • @HomesteadandChill
      @HomesteadandChill  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Thank you so much for the kind words and we hope you have found our videos helpful! It is recommended to place the drip tape with the emitters facing upwards but if you use the drip tape that we link in the caption, you can then cover it with mulch. We have the drip tape uncovered in the video for visual purposes but we try and keep them covered with mulch for the most part.

    Fantastic job of covering drip irrigation. However, you have missed a link in your supplies: the Perma-Loc shutoff valve that you use right after the 15 psi reducer.

    ... for a no dig gardening method, can compost be put over the tubes when it is replenished at the end of the growing season ...? ...

    • @HomesteadandChill
      @HomesteadandChill  Před rokem

      Yes, we cut out our vegetables at the soil line and leave the roots in place. Shortly after doing this video, we fully covered the drip tape with compost, as it will last longer not being exposed to direct sun. This drip tape is said to let water out, but not allow dirt in.
