It's a Prevert poem, not an Apollinaire. The voiceover version is meant to point out the crassness of the tour guide vs. the terrible beauty of the ossuary, brief superficiality of the present vs. lasting death. The guides were state-appointed and that version was censored and the director spent years without being able to work.

This is one of my favourite Jan Svaknmajer shorts, and it's largely down to the exquisite soundtrack, which Svankmajer actually opposed. His own voiceover narration version is inferior. This is even better if you're watching this with subtitles up so you can follow the Apollinaire poem that provides the music's lyric sheet.

I would kill for the soundtrack from Coffin Factory.
