The two who disliked this didn't think "You brought two horses too many" was a good line. This score and this film = masterpiece.

Some people just have piss-poor taste in music. What they think is cool is actually what they think OTHERS would think is cool. I call them lemmings, a word I got from William Pierce. They just go along with whatever they think the other lemmings would approve.

Nothing beat that feeling when I got out of the cinema back in the 70's and started running like crazy thinking I'm on a horse wearing a cowboy hat and packed with two colts, the world was mine. What a childhood we had in those days.

A genuine cinema music masterpiece. I was three years old when my father played this film in his movie theatre (I spent at least several nights a week there, even as a toddler), and the music made a very strong impression upon me even then. And how it could it not? The film and music is probably the duo's most "operatic" in style, tone, and structure, and the music is hardly subtle, with each character's themes so overtly identifiable, both in melody and instrumentation. (The word "operatic" is frequently over-used or misused in reference to so many other films that it is impossible to overstate its appropriateness for this film.) I've not seen this film in about 20 years. That will soon change. Thanks for sharing.

Sergio Leone’s “Once Upon A Time In The West” marked the pinnacle of the Italian western genre with an outstanding story, actors and performances, imagery and music.
Today we take the chance to celebrate the 90th birthday of Ennio Morricone with one of his most memorable scores for the big screen!
    P.S.
Yesterday’s Video “My Friend Flicka” by Alfred Newman had to be taken down for legal reasons. I am very sorry.

Fred! I clicked on 'My Friend Flicka' just this morning. I'm also sorry but never mind - you have so much lovely music. And although I'm just into the first few minutes it sounds lovely! I also like the little commentary you put at the start of each. This channel isn't just entertaining; it's educational and informative. Keep trucking Fred! Life and the Blessings of Life be upon you! By the way - who wrote the music for Westworld? The first one, nor the one with Peter Fonda - because it seems like I'm hearing an echo here...

Hello Sue and thank you so very much for your kind words!
Fred Karlin wrote the score for "Westworld", maybe we will have the music here someday... :-)
Regarding the "Flicka" case: Just go to the Soundtrack Fred CZcams page and you will notice some links at the very right of the black and white background photo. One for facebook, one for google+ and one for Vimeo. At the Vimeo page you will get to see most videos that had to be taken down and since today "Flicka" if you like to listen to it again.
      Best always!

At the beginning, is that ALSO Edda Dell'Orso...? Whoever she is, she makes a beautiful sound. Never mind, I just looked it up, and she is indeed Edda Dell'Orso. I get chills at the sound of her voice. I just can't seem to get enough.

    • @SoundtrackFred
      @SoundtrackFred Před 5 lety +4

      Hello Robert,
it is of course Madame Dell'Orso at the beginning. She and Morricone worked together in "A Few Dollars More" for the first time, over "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly", also on its very famous "Ecstasy Of Gold" piece and on "Duck, You Sucker!" and surely more, which I just don't recall now.
But maybe you search for those and enjoy her great voice even more!
      Fred

I get why some people don't warm to this movie. Arguably, the whole does not quite add up to the sum of its many wonderful parts. But the characters, tone, pace, style and MUSIC of Once Upon A Time do complement each other nicely and make for a very rewarding viewing experience nonetheless. The music is sad and aching, as if it wished for a better world, or perhaps was lamenting the price of progress (the loss of the wild, of innocence and (violently) even an entire family). Ennio's music has little of the "Western" in it, except the harmonica, which is diegetic anyway. Almost a mashup of music from another world, but one that still works. Compare with Butch Cassidy of the same era, an overall better picture, perhaps, whose music also evokes little of the west but has aged horribly.

Well...probably said or at least thought already by the listening/viewing audience: a "strange" style of a Western...but hey - the beginnings of the 1970's showed more of the going away from the 1950's and earlier movies. Why I say "1950's" is a lot of this somewhat bazar music was threading its way through the 1960's.
I do not have this soundtrack of Ennio Morricone's...might have been that I couldn't quite see Henry Fonda playing a bad guy or something. I do have the famous "Spaghetti Eastwood" flicks and two others: " The Big Gundown" (1968) and "The Untouchables" which I think is really good.
Oh...the only favorite one of this "Once Upon a Time" tunes I like is 'Goodbye, Cheyenne'. Kind-of-cute in style.

I would rather listen to this soundtrack than to watch the movie itself. Of course the movie was OK, I guess, but the soundtrack was/is everything in this case. Unlike _The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly,_ The movie itself wasn't all that interesting. Only the soundtrack really captures my interest.
