I watched three new movies this week: two science fiction, one horror. Two of them were good. French spiders, an apple-eating alien and a bad Netflix science fiction movie.
Jules (2023)
Atlas (2024)
Infested (2023)

Absolutely loved 'Jules'.. saw it twice, shared with friends..
Jules is a definite hidden gem. Fun, funny and good-hearted.
Infested! Not much I can add about it that you didn't already say. It's a winner. Long live French Horror🤘
I dimly remember a time when Jennifer Lopez was in good movies like Out of Sight. I guess we don't live in that universe anymore
Out Of Sight is very groovy. I first saw it in Seattle.
@@terrytalksmovies That's cool. I saw it with friends in highschool
I've got Jules lined up to watch this evening.
"Two of them are good; one is not." Tee-hee.
"NOT SCARED OF SPIDERS
SCARED OF BILLIONAIRES"
Great recommendations plus just the hit of your delightfully sardonic POV to give me a good chuckle at the start the weekend!
Always happy to provide the good stuff @amontaval . Enjoy!
I saw Jules a couple of months ago and was blown away how the director both used very little special effects (for an alien UFO movie) and also made an emotionally moving picture. Well done for reviewing it.
Thanks. It's a definite hidden gem.
Jules is a well done character-centered science fiction movie. It was heartening to see Ben Kingsley in something I really enjoyed after watching him fall from the heights of Gandhi and Schindler's List to cinematic abominations such as BloodRayne and The Love Guru
He was great in Shang-Chi and Iron Man 3. Trevor Slattery is a great character.
Gotta agree about Atlas. It just barely passes the "is this a movie" test.
Also, mechs are supposed to have weight, you have to feel as the kachunk kachunk around... in Atlas they are like kungfu fighters doing cartwheels and backflips. It makes everything seem unreal and enhances the CGI-ness of it all
Yep. No heft, no mass, no concussion when JLo gets chucked around like a frisbee.
"Jules" (Showtime): The Elders of the community befriend an Alien, stranded on Earth until it can find fuel for the spaceship.
"Atlas" (Nutflecks): Not interested...
"Infested": French Horror!
Yep. It's a lovely little movie.
What extremely good recommendations you give out Terry, much obliged. Many channels are all about same old same old, just like old radio stations only played the most commercial songs, oh wait they still do that. Anyhoo, I remember walking off Yonge st in Toronto in the mid 80s watch a couple of porn flicks while chain smoking Marlboro reds, how times change indeed. Moved past those two
I know what you mean about other channels. I don't want to diss anyone in particular but unless you have something different to say about the same movies, find outlier movies to cover.
It’s good to hear opinions but beating a dead horse seems like a profitable enterprise, look at the numbers. I’d rather watch your reviews, like you said even if movies I dislike for some reason or another
“Atlas from the block”! 😂😂
Got to agree Terry, Atlas was woeful. J Lo made the most convincing scientific genius since Denise Richards in The World is not Enough!
Not often I use the vote icons on Netflix, but on this occasion I was only too eager to tell their algorithm to never to let tripe like Atlas darken my doorstep again!
Yep. I did too. You have to tell them when they stuff up.
I remember Jules playing, I should have caught it. On names: I don't mind a female Atlas so much because of a vague resemblance to "Alice," plus "book of maps" might have been the intent, and as for Harlan, author David Gerrold specifically named his self-aware AI Harlie, in the novel When Harlie Was One, as a nod to Ellison, so it's been done -- just better. Yeah, the trailer for Atlas made no impression on me. A review for it could put down a bad movie and a bad novel all at once: "Atlas? Shrugged." Thanks, Ter.
Yeah, Atlas is cookie-cutter product for hungry Netflix. Nobody will care about it or remember it in six months. It will disappear as it if never existed.
@@terrytalksmovies Almost as if it were a ... CLOUD atlas.
@@williamblakehall5566 Clouding the Atlas of the mind, perhaps.
totally with you on the "Variety is the spice of Life" ethos in all things...sure sometimes you need a Mylanta or a Quick-eze for that spice... but it's worth it! Not sure I'll run so much as Crawl to see Atlas, but i saw one review on here describing it as "it would've been good...if it'd had come out 1985!" a lot of folks now use the numbers of people who see it as a measure of its quality...as in 200 million saw this so it must be good- but Netlfix algorithms don't seem sophisticated enough to tell whether a viewer watched the whole movie or just tuned out after a while (or turned it off and never returned) , let alone whether they use the "I Liked/Loved/Hated" this option. I guess they don't want too much feedback that could upset their preconceptions of the quality of their shows. I'd like for there to be a "I feel entirely indifferent to this bland work...i don't love it, nor do I hate it...i just want to forget it!" option! lol! Jules sounds wonderful!
Because of my eclectic tastes in movies, algorithms rarely get it right and suggest all kinds of random things for me to watch.
Netflix has taken the SYFY channels place for making/presenting really some bad science fiction except every few years a good/great production sneaks in. Farscape and The Expanse were two productions that I thought were light-years ahead of the typical bunch.
The Expanse is next level space opera.
Yes! Any mention of my hero Harlan Ellison automatically earns an upvote.
He deserves better than getting name-checked in Atlas.
@@terrytalksmovies And he got it. Some idiot with money and no talent and no good taste made a shitty movie that mentions Harlan because he read "I Have No Mouth and I must Scream" (or more likely played the game) named checking Harlan is no skin of Harlan's corpse. If Harlan were still alive he easily could have seen Atlas (he had a group that would indulge in shitty movies) and maybe gotten a tiny thrill out of that. A tiny thrill, after thinking about whether or not it was actionable (never made fun of a highly litigious loud mouth with an excellent track record in the courts).
I miss him every day.
Atlas. And don't forget the predictability. And I can only take it in 10 minute long views before I get disgusted and I have to turn it off until the next day.
It was made to a template and has as much originality as a blank sheet of paper.
Can anyone give a comparison between "Atlas" and the animated feature "Mars Express"? The latter doesn't seem to have anything new in terms of themes but I like the visual style.
Hi Terry. Jules looks really good and now on my list based on your video. I don't have Netflix right now but sounds like I can skip Atlas given your thoughts on the film. Another great video! Hope you have a great week.
Thanks Dave. You lose nothing by skipping Atlas, mate. Stay on your Aki Kaurismäki journey. 😀
Hey! I loved Rampage. It was an American kaiju movie, and I was along for the ride. I'll definitely check out Jules. Just watched Furiosa and loved it as well.
Oh and Infested! It was quite a creepy movie!
Rampage was for me, mid at best but some people liked it.
Thanks for the French recco!
Avec plaisir. 😉
Thanks Terry, was thinking about watching Atlas. Quick swerve to watch Infested instead. Close call😅
Infested will be a LOT more fun. Enjoy!
... recently binge-watched, Sugar. It's a strange one, but well worth watching.
I agree, Richard.
Thanks Terry will check out Jules. When I read the thumbnail I immediately knew Atlas was the dud lol
Didn't take too much to figure out 😊
Nah. It's mass-produced cookie-cutter science fiction.
I've had in the past and am currently dealing with a family member with dementia. It's not easy. But not like the movie version. I saw a few spy/assassin films on Netflix that were just going thru the numbers, can't even remember the names. Haven't seen many French horror films but I found High Tension disappointing due to it's very illogical twist,. Think I'll skip Infested. Scared of both billionaires and spiders!
Billionaires have killed more people than spiders.
Sorry for the things you're dealing with. I've been there. It's life-changing in the worst way. Take care.
C'mon, Terry. You knew in advance the JLo flick would be a gasser! It had to be.
She's made good movies. This ain't one of them.
Just hearing the title “Infested” makes me think of Clint Howard in “Ticks” czcams.com/video/QqtBGcMyA-Q/video.htmlsi=xkyGUKZ0AAl8Pcu0
😂
LOL Clint Howard is always more entertaining than his brother.
Terry: I guess that JLo has gone real low to get a paycheck(?)
BTW…when is your next live chat?
Next livestream... Monday 10th of June my time. 😀
Maybe Harlan Ellison insulted the writer at some point, as he was wont to do?
I doubt it. Even if that was the case, staying spiteful for that long the s a mental illness.
@@terrytalksmovies - even people who LIKED Harlan Ellison agreed that he was quite the little shit. David Cronenberg named the duplicitous tech nerd in VIDEODROME after Ellison as well, though he meant that as a tribute to an author he admired.
I don't know if naming a villain after a guy who insulted you is a sign of mental illness-I certainly hope not, because Tammy once named a secondary villain after her boss's boss at Chase who was an arrogant scumbag to her, and I've got a minor villain in my Watson series who rejoices in the name "Sir Dunnel Trumm"! If it ever goes to series, I really hope they cast some entitled-looking asshole with red hair in a combover.... 😁
Hey! Titanfall 2 is a really fun game! it's certainly better than Atlas! :D
That's a very low bar to jump. 😉😀
I watched the trailer for Atlas a while back and knew that I could forego watching the movie. It was cringe and trope filled.
It was a tick the boxes exercise. Cynical and dismissive of the audience.
There is NO WAY IN HELL I'm watching Infested. I'm sure it's fun but I'll pass.
LOL. It's very effective!
Atlas looks like more of the same old tired hero wins in the end plot.
It's annoyingly predictable and no character has anything like a realistic... character.
🕷🕸🕷
Hate winter! ❄🌪💨🌬
Trump learned his dancing from Stormy Daniels and not from Stormy Weather.
I also don't understand the Andromeda plot. Using google for 30 seconds would show any author, that the idea is complete BS and makes no sense.
Yep. Astronomy isn't as difficult science to understand the basics of .
Atlas for a girl isn't as stupid a name as Terry is for a guy.
Okay Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov 😉
Yeah - for god's sake it's time to fix the Alien franchise once and for all. Rename her Becky.
What else can they do with Alien? We don't need it. Tell the next story in the next universe, stop milking the cash cow.
