  • Commercial Air Handling Units (AHU's) require regular and thorough maintenance to ensure efficient running whilst it circulates, extracts and conditions the air.
As part of a service, all the dirty filters will be replaced. Additionally, the coils and housing are treated using an anti-bacterial cleaner.
When these systems are neglected over long periods, they become saturated with dirt and pollutants. The toxic conditions of this environment become the ideal breeding ground for bacteria which negatively affects your health. Typically titled " sick building syndrome" the pollutants increase symptoms of asthma with long-term adverse health effects.
These types of contamination are associated with meningitis, urinary tract infections and even septic arthritis.
A responsible HVAC service contractor should be regularly servicing your system to ensure it is running reliably, efficiently and most importantly, safely.

I don't know how this came up on my phone but I'm grateful as I'm a facilities manager and would like to show this video to our contractors that maintain our ahu's. I don't think they are this thorough.

Looks like you had a lot of fun cleaning this AHU and cleaned it up pretty well! A few things to consider though. Why not use an extendable lance on a vacuum cleaner to vacuum in between the attenuator pods? Using a broom spreads all the contaminant you are trying to remove into the atmosphere. Use a Hazardous class vacuum with a HEPA filter rather than a wet and dry vacuum with no vacuum bag! Finally, disposable coveralls are preferable for this line of work which can be bagged up and disposed of safely, rather than carrying all that dirt on your work overalls!

A little RPE, and general PPE wouldn't go a miss either!
