A Taste of Honey live on Solid Gold during the 80-81 Season. Unfortunately, no SOLID GOLD DANCERS, but one of my favorite performances of one of the world's most recorded songs.
I was a CSAR Helicopter with the USN homebased at NAS Atsugi fm '67-'69. I was in love with a girl fm Fukuoka. I returned fm VN in 10/69 & shipped home. I never saw her again. This song is about my lost love!!
Thank you for your service brother. Doesn't go away does it... I was sixteen when this song debut in '81 and I met a girl in the roller skating rink that swept me away... didn't last long 'cause she fell for my friend... LOVE 🦨 STINKS.🇺🇸🫡✌️
What a talented group they were. They sang, wrote and played instruments. On top of that they were classy and beautiful. A winning combo! You'd be hard pressed to find that today.
This has been one of my favorite songs ever. I rode my bike and hummed the song in the early 60s, I couldn't understand the Japanese lyrics but the song still moved me. I was so happy A Taste of Honey added lyrics I could understand. Hauntingly beautiful song.
Oh stop, hun. I'm 59 and lately been thinking of all THE GOOD ONES I let go. One passed away (rx OD). Found another darling on Facebook, missed her by a few months... and she haunts me literally. Once when I found her (too late) and then again 3 yrs later wrote an article she is in and both times a clock ran for 3 hrs & 20 mins, then stopped. (Do Ghosts Follow Us? by Dan W. Miller) Luckily, I connected again recently with another and even though she's married, we're having fun remembering. These 3... ah... my favorites. My ex-wife of 10 yrs doesn't even make the Top 10. BWAHAHAHAHA!
Beautiful and soulful performance, as a little boy in Thailand I heard the Kyu Sakamoto japanese version. Then again as a teenager in Detroit by A Taste of Honey. Both great. Nirandorn Neville
I remember watching this broadcast on television (I always watched Solid Gold's year-end countdown). Had me thinking Janice-Marie was part Asian and Hazel Payne was the greatest multi-instrumentalist of all time. Then on June 1, 2020(!) I learn Hazel didn't even appear on the original recording. WTF, man... One of the greatest jams ever. SO GLAD J-M stuck to her guns; neither her producer (George Duke) nor her label head wanted to make/release this song, and among the concessions she made to include it on the album was to waive songwriting credit (these lyrics are hers). Awesome, awesome song.
I remember being 13 and watching this on tele in NZ 1981. Such memories of youth, promise and innocence. I thought this was the prettiest song Id ever heard and I stil do.
I always had a connection to this song and remember seeing this performance. Thru research I discovered that it was the number 1 song on the charts June 1963 when I was born.
+M. Jones when you get done talking, todays music is nothing but shit!! there are no good songs!!.i feel( sorry )for people like you, that like that shit!! i'm also a musician,(obviously)you are not!! and as a musician i hear music much differently than you do!! all you can do is listen to it,because you can't play it!! and if you like this crap that's playing on the radio today then you don't know what real music is!! ,and you have(poor)taste.oh....and when you learn to play.........then you can(elaborate),unitil.... then keep listen to that crap!!!!!!
Domo Ariegato for posting this video. It is so beautiful and I applaud Taste Of Honey for going the extra step to "wearing a Kimono, her gentle fan expressions and the other singer learning how to play that complexed instrument. It was just so beautiful. This is surely a lesson of "East Meets West".
Timeless classic. I remember seeing this on tv here in NZ back in 81 when I was a teenager. Memories from the last innocent era in music before the depressing grunge of Nirvana and the gangster rap of the 90s.
Ten years ago, I hung out at a karaoke bar and one us regulars was this girl of Japanese-American descent. One night she was called to sing and she came out in a kimono and sang it in Japanese while doing a traditional dance. Everyone in the bar stopped talking and watched and then gave her a standing ovation when she was through and for the rest of the night she didn't pay for one drink. Sad thing was, I was the next singer and nobody gave a damn, LOL.
SUCH A BEAUTIFUL SOUL SEARING RENDITION P.S. ( WHILE PLAYING THIS< THE SWEET SOUNDS PROVIDED A BACK GROUND TO FURTHER MY INSPIRATION TO WRITE ANOTHER MOST DIFFICULT SONG AS A TESTAMENT TO MY JUST PASSED OLDER< ONLY BROTHER< BARRY< A ONE TIME MENTOR< ALWAYS AVAILABLE ADVISOR/SUPPORTER< & ONE TIME FELLOW JUNIOR HIGH ORCHESTRA MEMBER(VIOLA FOR HIM< VIOLIN FOR ME)>R.I.P.

Wow, loved this song as a kid. Still do, Taste of Honey musicians, singers, Janice Johnson, and Hazel Payne so inspirational. Thanks for posting this, classic.
They hit #3 pop in Billboard, 6-13-81. God bless you, Charmed, for postin' it. Thanx! Have a blessed week! RIP, Kyu Sakamoto ( original singer of the Japanese version).
Man! She had that audience in the palm of her hand! This was when you had true talented performers who could perform with their clothes on and didn't rely on how much T&A they were showing...Beautiful girl, beautiful voice, beautiful song!!!!!!!!!!!
I was sixteen when this song debut in '81. My cousin introduced me to her neighbor and we hit it off instantly however TWO weeks later I took her to my neighborhood and she fell for my next door neighbor..🎵🎶.LOVE 🦨 STINKS 🎵🎶🎵J. Giles Band 1982 RIP Peter Wolf.
The real deal Ladies and Gentlemen! One of my favourites from way back which made me listen to traditional Koto players too. Is it possible to give infinity plus one stars? If so...
I remember this song from when I was 12. I always loved her voice, so pure. I think that was why I really enjoyed Klymaxx when they came along several years later.
This song bring tears to my eyes. The woman I love with all my heart left me. Her name is Xochitl, if you read this this, please know that I will always love you!!!

Man that was an amazing post!!! I can't give it enough thumbs up...I took down my guitar to try to play along with harpist but she just blew me away and gave it up and said "You Go Girl"
I loved this song SO MUCH when I was about 15 - wore out that little 45 record, I just couldn't possibly listen to it/sing along enough times!! I wasn't allowed to watch Solid Gold, so to see this clip now is just "over the top" for me!! :)
Oh, what can I say..this is so beautiful! Sakamoto was good but this is so much better! Even to think they also recorded my all time favorite dance song: Boogie Oogie Oogie! What a performance!!
Janice said in a 2010 interview that she also plays the koto. Hazel didn't play the koto on the original recording, but played or mimed playing to koto in live performances.
entered Billboard March 7, 1981 ..reached #3 originally a #1 hit for Kyu Sakamoto in April, 1963, the first and only Japanese artist to reach #1 in Billboard
@mistermisterxx Yes June Kuramoto was the talent playing the kyoto on the album. Hazel is playing the "air kyoto" in this video, but if you scroll down a member of AToH band clarified that Hazel did study with June and, by this performance could actually play the song perfectly.
I was a CSAR Helicopter with the USN homebased at NAS Atsugi fm '67-'69. I was in love with a girl fm Fukuoka. I returned fm VN in 10/69 & shipped home. I never saw her again. This song is about my lost love!!
