After I sold that, I found myself gravitating back towards the 944, and just today I purchased a 1983 black on black 944 with only 53k original miles. I must say, the inverted tach is the niftiest thing.
Nice review , but I have the same car and the steering does not vibrate at all, nor does it track off center. I think you may need to have your wheel alignment/wheel balance/engine mounts looked at.
Ive had a fair few 944s, Ive dailed two of them and raced all of them. They are not supposed to shudder and bounce in the steeringwheel, I had an 85A with manual steering just like yours and it was still dead smooth in the wheel but also very precise. If you swear that your wheels are round then I would check wheelbearings aswell as the contactsurface between the brakedisk and the hub. Now I know on 86 and older the disk is bolted to the hub from behind so its not as big of an issue as its been on later model cars, but I would still check it.
I had an 87 944S, Alpine white with a black interior, that was a lot of fun. I took off the stock 15" phone dials and put on a set of 16" phone dials from a 944 turbo.
I have an 84 944 NA and loveit. Once I find the oil leak and get revitalize my suspension I will love it even more. So many things you can do to really personalize the car and parts are readily available. I subscribed! Thanks for the video.

I also have manual steering on my 944, and the steering wheel does not vibrate like that. The uneven steering feel (easier near the center) might be due to worn out intermediate shaft u-joints. They get pretty corroded in 30 years, and having brake fluid spill on them (from the MC, that's above), does not help.
Great review! I just test drove an 84 today (black on black) Nearly everything you described is consistent with my experience. Unfortunately because I was on surface streets I wasn't able to get out of third, but I did run it up the rev range on the upside down tach.
Wow, so after your video today on the issue with the timing, I realized you can actually *see* the resonance in the revs at the beginning of this video where the camera stabilization fails. Just thought that was cool.
This review points out at things that may have deteriorate with the time, like steering components that create vibrations, or too soft shock absorbers… And then… man, that car is filthy, it needs some love: I bet that the cosmetics just reflect the mechanical conditions of this Porsche.
+Josh Moss If memory serves, the supra has a shorter load bay than the 944. The supra's compartment is definitely deeper than the 944's. Unfortunately, I don't remember how big the space is with the rear seats in the supra folded down. I don't even remember if they do fold down.

I've always liked the 944, they seem like they would be fun to drive.....but what kept me away was the cost of repairs. Most of the 944 guys I've talked to say that a clutch replacement is around $3,000, timing belt $1,500, oil to water intercooler $1,500.....well, you get the drift.
Not idiotic if you don't have a place to work on it. I know how to do all of my own repairs, but something tells me my landlord wouldn't appreciate a transaxle, driveshaft and bellhousing on her front lawn.

But for a 944, I wouldn't even think about buying one if you don't have your own place to keep it down for long periods of time. I don't even own one of these yet, but I finally bought a house and am assembling a complete rebuilt drivetrain from long block to transmission so it'll be ready to go when I pick a chassis. I figure I'll have about 6.5K into it before I even buy a car to put it in. The way a lot of these cars have been treated over the years it's about the only way to get something reliable together.
If you do it at the Porsche DEALER it's that expensive. Find a good independent Porsche mechanic and it will cost half that if not less. The repairs aren't even that bad. The car is reliable and most are sold with the clutch, belts, and water pump already replaced. Clutch lasts much longer than anyone will drive this thing for, same with the water pump. However the belts only have to be replaced every 15k and tensioned every oil change. It costs like $300 + labor for a belt and $100 total for a tension. That isn't that bad for a car of this caliber. Now, if you're someone who can't POSSIBLY ever have to pay for stuff like that, get a Corolla. Mine only requires oil changes and the occasional filter. However, if you're looking for fun these things are very much worth the price.
***** She's giving you a good price. Now, I prefer the 1986+ models because they look much better, but a mint condition, 7k mile 944 for under $10k is a sweet deal. I would get a Porsche mechanic to look over it before you buy, but she's giving you a solid offer.

I owned one for a little over year. I bought it for 53k NOK(8.5k-ish USD), and by the time I got done with it I had spent 110k NOK(16k-ish USD) total on the car(parts and labour). I live in Norway, so everything over here is rather expensive.. This car can empty your wallet if you're not careful with the purchase. Parts are expensive, and some are hard to get.
yodokodo Well, you're correct that EVERYTHING is Norway is expensive. Americans complain about gas prices and I just roll my eyes. You guys pay nearly 10 USD a gallon! I ordered a pizza once when there. It was the last time I did that. I can see why most people just eat at home. Thanks for the tip. For me, it ended up as a bad daily. I've had a few "normal" cars since then, but the 944 was such a blast, so I had to get a sportier affordable car. So now I'm driving a 2002 Toyota MR2 Mk3, and I'm pleased enough so far :) Not the most comfortable car at high speeds though(short wheelbase).
kolos balazs I have an 82 944 goes like a dream haven't had any issues however I do my preventative maintenance (replacing piping,cables and electronics) but it is an old car so expect some stuff to go wrong recommend getting the timing belt inspected or changed may have been done at 75,000km but that may have been many years ago definitely recommend (turbo 944 has a lot of overheating issues though)
My 83 with manual steering has NO shimmy or shake, mine is smooth with no dead zone in the middle, you have and issue with yours. I have had 2 of these and this one I restored. You should look into yours.
piedpiperIII The tires I had when I shot this video were mildly out of balance. Now that the tires are perfectly balanced, the shimmy is still there, but only when the road surface causes it (It doesn't take much)
I had a shimmy when I put new tires on mine. Took it to 4 places to rebalance them, finally I bought a second set new tires but better brand, now no shimmy AT ALL no matter the road even took it to 130mph smooth. Much nicer that way.

Okay so here is the deal. I'm in high school looking for a first car. For every one person i find that is pro 944 i find 7 that claim that the car is the devil. If I don't mind keeping up on maintenance doing majority of the work myself and use the car as a simple daily driver then should I still be scared into not buying one? I live out in AZ so the weather is hot. I know all the usual bs… new timing belt and water pump every three years or 30 to 40 thousand miles. I've got a budget of 4600 bucks. Am I on the right track? Should I go out and get myself a 944 or should I just keep walking to school? Thanks to anyone who replies!
Jacob AbuKhader Obviously, make sure you can afford the yearly upkeep and/or you can work on it yourself. After that, I'd say go for it. You're in high school so I presume you have no other living expenses. Buy a fun car now before you have to do boring things like save and budget. You'll have a great experience with the car whether you're driving it or working on it. Plus you'll be a high schooler with a Porsche! How cool is that? If you aren't willing to take the risk, have you thought about a Miata?
Porsche had a habit of putting rear seats in cars that didn't need them for insurance purposes to make them a 2+2. They are just as useless in the 911 as they are in the 944 so don't feel bad :P (unless it's a 911 Targa, then it's doable)

You are doing a road test and describing things as if they occurred when new. Your car has old age problems just as my '88 NA does, only different ones. Many of your comments are bogus or reflect problems all old cars share. Go to a shop that specializes in 944, spend a small fortune to have it brought back to spec then road test it.
If I spent $3k on fresh paint, then I would have to worry about chips and things. Besides, it doesn't matter how bad the paint is for the longevity of the car since all the body panels are galvanized steel.
After peeling plasti-dip off an entire 944, I can say, without a shadow of a doubt, that I now hate plasti-dip. It doesn't help that the plasti-dip in that case was used to cover up terrible paint and crash damage. Plus it just looks bad.

Aleksandar Friscic I mean you're supposed to brake adequately *before turn-in* to allow your tires to grip, providing your front wheels with the required traction to overcome forward momentum. As someone who until recently had awful tires on an AWD Audi, I definitely understand the hate for understeer but I can't imagine it being more dangerous than oversteer, however, as oversteer usually puts you into oncoming traffic while understeer would usually put you into a ditch (the much safer alternative).
William Thieme Tnx for reply. You just said understeer shouldnt occur...that was my point in the first place...but if it does occurs,you cant do much,while if oversteer happens,you can "save" it. Ofc,both are bad,best would be full traction,but understeer throws you head on in oncoming traffic,while oversteer is more sideways,making the potential impact less harmfull (sorry for bad english)

My experiences with understeer usually occur when I'm pointed away from the opposing lane of traffic so maybe it's just different roads or driving styles. I suppose different people would be more safe with one type or the other depending on their situation and driving style.
The steering should not vibrate like that. Something is wrong. And (expecting flak here! but, hey-ho; personal taste) it's as ugly as sin. Porsches just look like squashed frogs.

I had an 84. My steering wheel never did that. Not even above 130mph. I've driven 5 of these cars, varying years and never saw this issue. Strange.
I really like this thing but I'd have to get at least an 86. I just don't like the look nor the upside down tachometer of the pre-86 ones.

Many of your comments are bogus or reflect problems all old cars share. Go to a shop that specializes in 944, spend a small fortune to have it brought back to spec then road test it.

If I spent $3k on fresh paint, then I would have to worry about chips and things. Besides, it doesn't matter how bad the paint is for the longevity of the car since all the body panels are galvanized steel.

After peeling plasti-dip off an entire 944, I can say, without a shadow of a doubt, that I now hate plasti-dip. It doesn't help that the plasti-dip in that case was used to cover up terrible paint and crash damage. Plus it just looks bad.

Aleksandar Friscic I mean you're supposed to brake adequately *before turn-in* to allow your tires to grip, providing your front wheels with the required traction to overcome forward momentum.
As someone who until recently had awful tires on an AWD Audi, I definitely understand the hate for understeer but I can't imagine it being more dangerous than oversteer, however, as oversteer usually puts you into oncoming traffic while understeer would usually put you into a ditch (the much safer alternative).
William Thieme Tnx for reply. You just said understeer shouldnt occur...that was my point in the first place...but if it does occurs,you cant do much,while if oversteer happens,you can "save" it. Ofc,both are bad,best would be full traction,but understeer throws you head on in oncoming traffic,while oversteer is more sideways,making the potential impact less harmfull (sorry for bad english)
Aleksandar Friscic Don't discredit yourself mate, you're quite understandable. My experiences with understeer usually occur when I'm pointed away from the opposing lane of traffic so maybe it's just different roads or driving styles. I suppose different people would be more safe with one type or the other depending on their situation and driving style.
