  • Taped in 1989 for American Theatre Wing's CUNY TV. She was working on "Born Yesterday" at the time, which explains the hair (and the nails?). Posting here so more people can see, but the episode in its entirety can be downloaded here: americantheatre...

    I think she should have been applauded when she got to the end of her story -- the first step in a marvelous career in comedy. What a treasure she was.

      I think her tentative way of talking made them think she was about to say something else, and the moment for applause just got away. I think they liked her a lot.

    Glad your mother wouldn't let that rain stop you, Madeline :~)
    Can't stop wonder at how sophisticated, highly deliberate yet utterly spontaneous, creative and worm, at the same time, is her use of words, gestures, her voice. It was more than just a talent; she was a work of art in herself.

    One of the many things I admire about her is that she often went to interviews or whatever with very little or no makeup - she went as herself, and spoke what she thought. Stage makeup was for stage performances. She didn't, to my knowledge, speak much about women's rights in public, but she lived as she wanted to live, as a smart, aware, talented woman who did not take kindly to some men's expectations that she should hide her mind and be subservient to them.

    Some people have this comedy "twinkle". There is something in their demeanor that makes you laugh just by earing / seeing some innuendo or facial body expressions. Madeline Khan had that. Fabulous comediant.

    It's so weird how different Madeline looks when she has blondish hair. I remember her most from clue with dark short hair.

    • @agirl9443
      @agirl9443 Před 2 lety

      Blazing Saddles… blonde hair.
      Her natural hair wasn’t jet black like in Clue. Mixture of blondes and light browns. But for her movie characters they dyed it or put wigs on her. She had lots of different looks for the parts she played. There’s also lots of photos of her online (in real life/out of character), even from HS/college yearbook. It is especially different to see her without (or without a lot of) makeup, like here.
      She was unique in every way, and a brilliant talent in whatever she created (as a character on stage or in film, singing in musical theater or in Opera).
