- OLD SCHOOL PERFORMANCE BY ARISTA RECORDING ARTIST GQ. A Bronx group that effectively mixed East Coast disco and Chicago soul covers in the late '70s and early '80s, GQ began as Sabu & the Survivors in 1968. Lead vocalist Emanuel Rahiem Leblanc, Keith Crier, Herb Lane, and Paul Service were original members, but by 1980 changed name to GQ, following Service's departure, added drummer Stevie Beatz Adorno and timbalero Kevin Zambrana. They had two Top 10 R&B and Top 20 pop hits, as well as a number one R&B single in 1979, with "Disco Nights (Rock-Freak)" also peaking at #12 pop; the single also won GQ an American Music Award. Their remakes of the Billy Stewart classics "I Do Love You" and "Sitting in the Park" were number five and number nine R&B singles in 1979 and 1980 respectively, with "I Do Love You" also reaching number 20 pop. They enjoyed one other Top 30 R&B single in 1981, "Shake." All their hits were on Arista from 1979 to 1982. 4 gold records & 3 platinum records

MESSAGE TO ALL FANS OF GQ!
i'm Stevie Beatz Adorno, the GQ drummer in this video. It was shot 30 years ago. First let me say thank you for loving our music. I am OVERWHELMED by the amount of Views (over 200,000 views) and scores of amazing comments from GQ fans young and old. GQ music and my years with the band are special to me and i am very proud to have been part of the history of R&B music. I was Lucky enough to ask the producer of that show for a VHS Tape copy at the time and its been on my shelf for 30 years.Unfortunately there are no total filmed concerts of GQ from that time that we know of. The "Atlantic City Live" Footage that you all like so much is the only example of what we Really sounded like "LIve" not Lip-Sync!! the Band was HOT! Again, for Rahiem,Sabu,Herb,Kevin and Myself, We Love and Thank you all for always remembering GQ and your Love of our Music. Its so good to know GQ still Touches Peoples hearts. You All touched ours.
Man your pocket is incredible!!!!!!!!! Thank you for your contribution to the classics! Youngsters like myself study you and your craft and learn real music!!! Thanks Steve!!!! God bless!
hi Landon, thank you for your kind words. reading them this morning brought tears to my eyes. as artist, all we want is to bring joy to people with our work. i'm just a link in a long chain of R&B artist and i am very grateful that the band and i had the opportunity to bring our music to the world. thanks again Landon, you warmed my heart.
Dear Stevie, this music is a dream beyound time and space.
Stevie - "I DO LOVE YOU" is absolutely the most joyous song from that entire period. I just grin and and feel the love throughout your recording. Many, many thanks, my man!
THANK YOU BRO!
No laptops, no sample tanks, no dj's, no loop drum tracks...just real instrumentation and talent. Incredible.
Emanuel Rahiem Leblanc is my uncle! He's the reason I got into music. Love you uncle. Hope you come back down and see us soon.
The dude was /is this !@it!! Killing that vocal and spanking that guitar.. !👍😊

Awesome is the way that I describe them!
yeah, Sabu was my next door neighbor in tha Boogie Down Bronx....Paulding Avenue...yep, he was a good guy..I remember walking to the #2 train on White Plains Road talking about the business and Bass playing.....I went into the Military shortly after GQ had the hit Disco Nights...never saw him in his success...I just recently found out he passed away....even now I swell up a little....cool dude...RIP..Sabu..............much peace to his family and friends......................tha R.O.B.
I'm a musician and liked these guys in highschool. At the time based on. The album cover I thought they were just a singing group. I didn't realize they played their own instruments. Man these guess are legit musicians.
This is a master piece....super!!!
Thanks Aaron...

Stevie Beatz Adorno
because very few young people have the focus that it takes to learn , study and master the instrument of their choice....its a sample and steal it world!!!
Excellent band. Very tight.
One of the best grooves-very technical with the accents on the hi hats-superb drumming-he is so passionate and overflowing with joy-i felt it playing live at gigs too-i realized my dream of being a drummer enough so I got to experience God's gifts and blessings in music-
I had the 45 and played it over and over-my Mom and I thumped the house with a pumpin' home stereo-Thank You for your music, your infuence upon me, and great memories!
YOUNG PEOPLE THIS IS HOW ITS DONE. REAL TALENT SINGING,PLAYING, AND DANCING. OLD SCHOOL NEVER DIES. GETS BETTER WITH AGE.

On this day in 1979 {May 12th} GQ performed "Disco Nights" and "I Do Love You" on the late Dick Clark's American Bandstand
Two months eariler on March 17th "Disco Nights" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100; eventually it peaked at #12 and spent 18 weeks in the Top 100...
On April 14th "Disco Nights" reached #1 {for 2 weeks} on Billboard's R&B chart...
And one month later on June 30th "I Do Love You" entered the Top 100 and reached #20 and stayed 17 weeks in the Top 100...
R.I.P. Mr. Clark...
Oh yes... don't stop this feeling was a beautiful song
Music with Class
I just discovered this song recently while listening to XM. This is the joint! This is before my time, but it makes me wish that I could have experienced this music first hand. Must have been great times!
I play this song 30 times today what a great singer with a great song from a great era R&B soul and disco all rolled into one awesome song
Thanks sean!
Stevie Beatz Adorno you're welcome good music is a gift from God it does more for the soul than religion
Yes indeed! It brought us great joy to be able to play our music and make people happy! Herb,Rahiem and I are blessed that everyone still remember us and are grateful.
Stevie Beatz Adorno great music will always be remembered by the people who know I love early music from the 50s Elvis Presley Brook Benton Fats Domino and I love this era of Music late 70s early 80s groups such as this Teena Marie Stephanie Mills the soul Funk era was great and the love R&B ballads but anyhow this song is so electrifying it has a party type the spiritual feeling behind it once again this group is outstanding and has so many other songs that should have been higher on the charts really underrated group should be well more known thank you
My song I was a lil girl at the Cook out jamming tovthisx🎉❤🤩🔥👏 The 70's childhood speaker in the background!!!
Thanks Lynda❤

RAHEIM-AN
OLD FRIEND OF MINE FROM BACK IN THE DAY-BRONX, NY 70's
Oh man how this song would rock the club back in the day.
...and I'm still trying to play that bass line..."Sabu" is so damn good.
I know he has passed but I've heard he's Keith Sweats Uncle.
When we used to go out on Friday and Saturday nights to boogie down and get all sweaty and have all kinds of fun movin the body to the groove music. When were were at the dock's , the club opened at midnight an we danced till we were dripping sweat till 9am..... real groove music
Nunca vou me esquecer deste video trouxe de verdade .Eu era muito feliz neste tempo e não sabia hoje sou feliz mas não tem o mesmo tom .a luta leve de ser realmente feliz saudades
GQ is the greatest ..........thank u Herb
I always loved GQ's music. My favorite fingerfunk bass player, Keith Crier, had a groove unlike anything I heard since Bernard Edwards (damn he's gone too) Keith, you're 1 of a kind. RIP my brother.
Can't stop watching this version
I wish there were more videos of GQ. Thank you for uploading this.
Thank you K ! Sadly there’s not much of us 0riginal band playing live on video . And the videos that are out now are in no way the original band so the sound isn’t the same.
Thanks for all the wonderful comments and I Forgive the Nay sayers also. Love to all! .. Herb (Keys) Lane
H Lane this band was tight as hell
Rahiem is easily one of the kindest brothers that there is. It's a pleasure to be able to have seen him do his thing 2 weeks ago at The Sugar Bar. Hopefully, the video will be up to par & we can get them up here on youtube. The brother still sounds great today & you can take that to the bank!
What a song¡¡Good Quality¡¡
Pure talent. Miss those days.

STEVE GQ ADORNO
Damn...that guy can play the bass!
When we used to go out on Friday and Saturday nights to boogie down and get all sweaty and have all kinds of fun moovin the body to the groove music. Wake up the next morning and go to the beach and swim about a thousand yards all over the place, then eat like ravenous creatures who never saw food before. Who needed alcohol or drugs?! Even the chunky folks were healthy and IN SHAPE. And if not, you were lean, lean, lean!
Long live DISCO NIGHTS!

Thanks D!❤️🎶
This hit by GQ sold over 12 million records.
Let's not forget that they were called The Rhythm Makers before renaming themselves GQ. And "Disco Nights" got a first version on The Rhythm Makers LP on Vigor Records... search for the song "SOUL ON YOUR SIDE" to hear that early version...
Oh wow, what a classic. Brooklyn roller rink :)
Amazing musicians, I love the guitarist and the bassist. I remember those days of real music and musicians.... AMAZING! BEAUTIFUL!
thanks ken!
Thank You, Thank You, Thank, I was all of 8 or 9 years old when GQ was popular, I have GQ 1 & 2 on vinyl and just recently found a greatest hits CD. I always wondered what a performance of them was like and I got my answer....Oustanding!! The only thing I would have like to have seen was the percussionist solo. What a brilliant group of Musicians!!
These dudes were really jamming
ohhh i from Brazil i 14 age i love black music i love JAMES BROWN too 👏😍🎶
RIP SABU
The Jordache/Sasson Era! I miss these days..I was six years old being turned out on these sounds..GQ and CHIC, PATRICK ADAMS were the glue in keeping that FUNK alive in the late 70's post "G&H" reign.. They have an alternate version of this song with a longer conga break that sounds a lot "dirtier" in the mix. I can only hear it on the cable stations...I have "Soul on Your Side" already another monster..Their version of "Boogie Oogie" is waaaaayy better. Much respect to GQ!!
wowww just wowww
thanks Mario!
The Good Old Days!!.

i liked this song more than most others , and he drummer will read this, seguida, small world, would think very many would want to write something to a member of the band here but only 23 , soon more when the word gets out.
G.Q. one of my favorite Groups and jams from back then .

This is awesome. Much love to my fellow Bronxites.
This is priceless.
Ill always rock to this group.
Amazing video, thank you Stevie for uploading this.
Thanks for posting GQ! I don't believe I've ever seen them on TV whenever this song came out.
So glad I came across this video today. Brought me back to my youth...such a great time!
@SEGUIDA Now there are tears, because I was going to say something similar. I mean, when I hear this song, and when I heard it years ago, it seems to emanate from the spirit, from a place deep within. These highly inspired musicians seem to be drenched in a special "calling" in this captivating performance. What a study!
I was a little kid when this group came out. Looking at this video now, the band is amazing. Phenomenal musicians. By the way Raheim was adorable then, he is adorable now.
Raheim, i love you.
You are my ídolo for ever.
