  • Goldsmiths' seminar by Prof. Ray Egerton from the University of Alberta.
NanoMi is a project directed by NRC-Nano, a National Research Council of Canada laboratory in Edmonton. The goal is to develop and document a modular open-source electron microscope that researchers can build and possibly incorporate into other vacuum equipment. Using a thermionic electron source, we aim for a resolution of a few nm in SEM , STEM and TEM modes; UHV and field emission may be a future possibility. The talk describes current progress, along with some electron optics and electron-microscope history.
The seminar was held on 4th March 2021.

This is a very nice idea and it's good to see commercial manufacturers supporting it without trying to own it. If only it were more easy to make for people like me who don't have a super workshop. Perhaps an electron equivalent of PUMA can be done once you have worked out this thing - i.e. something that can be built with inexpensive generic parts and (let's say) a cheap CNC router for the custom metal parts (as opposed to a 3D printer which PUMA uses). That would be some way off I think but this is great for anyone with a university workshop at their disposal.
