Great to charge your car and have comfort hookups for your camper. Some may not be picturesque like you want in a campground but I love staying at KOAs because of the hookups. I tow with my ID4 alot as I have a camper rental buisness. 2 of my campers weigh 3000 pounds dry and this car does it in style. The one is tall and the other is more aerodynamic so one gets about 190 kms range and the other gets about 250 kms. My smaller pop up camper weighing 1500 pounds gets 300 kms of range. (all of these are on small highways where my max speed is 90 KPH). Here's the deal. The towing rating for the ID4 in Germany is 3500 pounds. The towing capacity in the US is 2700 pounds for the exact same car. In fact when they designed the car they said it could town up to 4200 pounds (AWD version), so this tells me and especially based on my experience, that the car is easily capable of towing what I am towing with.

I've done enough EV traveling that it's a comfortable routine to just get my napping and food breaks in during the charge. With a trailer that would be so much easier and more comfortable. @@ChristianElrod According to Scamp, trailer weighs 1500 lb dry. Tongue weight should be 150-225 lbs (10-15%). A trailer is just a big see-saw. Let’s assume the rear bumper is 25%closer to the axle than the hitch. So, 100 lbs on the rear bumper is 75 lbs off the hitch. If you start with 225 lbs on the hitch, you’re still OK. If you start with 150 lbs on the hitch, you’re too light. Your trailer will be unstable the faster you go. This assumes a dry trailer without food, clothing, water, etc. there’s plenty of CZcams videos that demonstrate what happens when you don’t have enough hitch weight. It all has to do with physics.

    @francisdoran971 Před 8 měsíci +1

    What i can see coming are new versions of fold down caravans as a way of reducing energy consuming drag and improving towing range a bit.
    Having looked at videos of the old Esterels, they don't take too long to put fully up. So not a huge inconvenience for many.
    Charging station infrastructure is also going to evolve to make allowances for vehicles towing.
    The powers that be have deigned that EVs are the way of the future. Whether one likes it or not, they are here to stay, so infrastructure will have to evolve to meet the needs of the user.
    Fossil fuel took a long time to develop a refuelling infrastructure.
    EV infrastructure is in its infancy, only realistically starting to be developed in a serious way in the last 5 years.
    Now far more EV models are on the market, moves are afoot to to massively build out the charging network, battery technology is improving all the time to improve range, but the human, especially if they have children, still needs a toilet or food break every couple of hours anyway.
    It will be a while before the big pickup trucks capable of towing massive mobile homes over long distances are freely available, but in time, they will.
    By 2035, not many people will be driving a petrol or diesel and by then, getting fuel for them may be as difficult as finding an EV charging station in a remote place is now.

  • @tgold99

    It's really strange that after decades of hybrids we still don't have a PHEV truck. I really want a small pickup to tow a small camper but not deal with the 100-150 mile range towing at highway speeds with an EV. If I had a PHEV truck, I could do 90% of my driving around town on 50 miles of battery range then still tow on the weekend without having to worry about range or charging in the middle of nowhere.

      Ford is bringing a PHEV Ranger for the 2025 model year, but just not for the US market for some crazy reason.
      The only issue I have with PHEV is that none of them can fast charge, so on any trip you are gas only unless you can use a level 2 overnight at a motel, or campground or somewhere.
      I think it could work at campgrounds since you could plug in the truck and then plug the camper into the truck

    • @tazeat
      @tazeat Před 8 měsíci

      You'd really take the time to disconnect the trailer half the time, wait and charge, to get just enough juice to go half or less the distance than just paying the extra $30-40 on a road trip to fill up a tank of gas in a couple minutes in a PHEV? Not like most PHEVs can charge very fast anyway...
      And I mean in both cases you have to balance the energy cost with vehicle cost. Any of those BEV trucks are 80k+ which dwarfs any existing gas costs. 80k financed over 5 years is like 60 months of $1500 payments. Hopefully any new PHEV trucks will be cheaper than the big BEV trucks with 40k+ of battery costs, I mean that's kinda the point.

      It's always trailer weight. Whatever the hitch takes doesn't count.

      It would definitely include the weight in the trailer, like water storage, or the bike rack and bikes. The weight in the vehicle itself would fall under payload, and would include the driver, passengers, everything else being carried in or on (if you had rooftop storage) the vehicle, plus 10% of the trailer weight. I'm not an expert by any means, but this is how I understand it to work. Also that 10% is a ballpark number that can change based on how the trailer weight is distributed.

      Technically, or legally maybe, but I have seen videos of a dealer in Canada towing 6000 pound trailers with a Model 3 with no issues, so an EV can probably safely go a few pounds over with no issues. The extra weight increases the amount of regen you get. All I noticed when I towed near the weight limit with my Explorer is it takes longer to stop, so I plan for that.

    You didn't spend much time talking about the nightmare of stopping every hour to charge for an hour. At 10:37, you say "two hours", but at 8:59, they say 75 miles between stops which is 1:15 minutes at 60 mph, and in my experience with a Bolt EV, adding 75 miles is at least half an hour all told, by the time you find a working charger, fool with an app and get back on the road. It must be twice as much time for them since my range is not halved by towing, though my Bolt is limited to 50 kW, and their ID4 can handle more power.
    Always using Electrify America presumably also adds miles since they must choose a route accordingly, and at 48 cents/kWh using public, level 3 charging stations, the price isn't much less than gasoline. I assume that "free charging" means that they have some sort of plan with Electrify America, but you don't discuss the cost of this plan. Charging at home at level 2, electricity is far less expensive than gasoline, but on the road, it's only a bit less.
    I love the idea of living in a Scamp on a cross-country trip, and towing it with an EV is definitely an interesting adventure, but you glossed over the most interesting details to paint a rosy picture of the experience. We don't need to pretend that EVs solve every problem as well as ICEVs, but seeing people push the boundaries of what's possible is nonetheless interesting.

      @kyle…. Exactly this happened to me 3 days ago. I took a 1,080-mile trip. Filled up 36 gallons diesel before starting and filled up again after about 550 miles. It took me 15 hours of actual driving time with one stop for late lunch and the fill up and one 10 minutes bathroom break once. No towing. Spent about 17 hours in the truck. I could have done it in one day but stopped at a rest stop for 6 hours sleeping in the truck bed. I have diamond back cover so I can just pull the cover down and be relatively secure. Most of the highway had 80 miles speed limit but with construction and traffic the average was about 65 mph. There is no way I can drive 50 mph and stop for hours every two hours. Actually, no. Two studies have confirmed that fast charging doesn't affect battery longevity. As long as the BMS does its job and keeps the temperature in the designed range (just as your engine will not seize if the radiator does its job).
      Battery degradation is mainly a function of time. Even very high mileage EVs have about 10% range loss after ten years.
