Good job on the video. I will be doing this job today and making a video as well. It was very nice to see basically what to expect before removing the cover. I'm an experienced mechanic and know my way around an engine and I still found your video very useful. Especially helpful was the details about how to remove the clips and the torque spec. The spark plug gap for stock would have been nice... I believe it is 0.032" and you are correct not to lube or Loctite the threads, but a small amount of anti-seize and synthetic grease on the outside of the coil boots is a very good idea. The gap should be double checked prior to installation. You never know... Also, no harm in using a thin coating of anti-seize compound, in case you have to do this again
Dang. I had my Milwaukee M18 1/2 inch impact driver all set to install the new plugs. 🤣 Nice video Bob! This will come in handy when I do the plugs on the 2019 X3 M40i Now I need you to buy a car with an N63 in it so I don't have to figure out how to do all the maintenance on my 2018 M550 as well.
I'm amazed at how clean modern engines with direct injection combust. Back in the day...80's cars...you'd see a nice carbon coating on the pistons. I haven't used any additives, but two years of crappy Arizona fuel, now the awesome German Super + (98 Euro Octane/ 93 US Octane)
Very educational video. Thanks much for sharing. A dump question from a new BMW owner. Is the same procedure applicable to 2020 X5 G05, which I believe using B58 variant as well? I could not find a video for G05 specifically on youtube.
Depends on how you drive, and if you have a tune or not. With a Stage 1 tune I would recommend 20k miles. Otherwise I would personally do it around 30-35k miles. I think BMW keeps them in there a bit longer.
@@bobmac1970Thanks for the reply, I just got a used 2018 540i and it's a little over 60k miles with no spark plug change done. The job seems super simple, especially from your video and many others. At least with the 540i just like the suvs, you don't have to take apart a bunch of plastic and the strut bar.
@@bobmac1970 makes sense! Because I was wanting to do a stage 1 tune, and a downpipe upgrade to my bmw. So I’m glad I asked because I was going to replace the myself. Unless that’s only required for e85 tune? . I’ll have to do more research to make sure before as I’m more than capable of doing myself I just need the information

Hello Bob, I have 2012 BMW 528ix 103k miles. I have drivetrain malfunction issue, it came up first 8 months ago but it was rare. Now it is coming more often. I always see it while accelerating upon a soft hills. Sometimes just accelerating. What could be the reason, I am not losing power and it removes after I restart car. Thanks
There are alot of possible causes. The only way to know for sure would be to use a scan tool to see what the error codes are. It could be a 'vanos' issue, or a fueling issue...it's only speculation without reading out the codes though. Once you know what error codes the car stored, you'll be able to at least have a closer area to look at.

B58 is so great on this easy access... I did my vq37 and it's a little harder. I saw how they did on ea825 and blown up....

Is it necessary to disconnect the plug from coil or can the coil be removed whilst still connected and just set to the side while plug is replaced?

No additives. I do make sure to use high tier fuel. Most brands add a bit of additive to their fuel. I also only use 93 US/98EU octane when possible.

Pretty much the same procedure with some minor differences.
What do you mean 12mm or 14mm thin wall? 12mm if it’s normal or 14mm if it’s thin?
What is the spark plug interval? How many miles?

Really depends on several factors. If you drive normal with some rare spirited driving, every 35k miles is perfectly fine.
How do you like the ngk’s over the champions?
Personal opinion is that NGK's are built better. I've had a couple of new champions fail out of the box years ago...quit using them.
Do you need to disconnect battery for this?
No need to disconnect the battery for this job. Nothing speaks against disconnecting if you feel safer, but it's not necessary.

The BMW oem plugs come gapped. Unless you are tuned, there's no need.

@@bobmac1970 Thank you. I couldnt see any error when I scan with OBD2. Do I need different scanner in order to see codes?
@@tarikakkoyunlu One that work pretty good for sure is the 'Bimmerlink' App and a bluetooth adapter. It reads the codes out well.
