Historical Significance:
Once, sages Vasishtar, Gouthamar, and Kanvar asked Lord Brahma for a suitable place on earth to do tapas. Brahma rolled a wheel made of Dharhai grass, which stopped at Panchetti. Sage Agasthiar conducted five yagnas here, giving it the name "Pancheshti." The area, blessed by Agasthiar, provides abundant groundwater, helping Chennai during water shortages. The saying “Pancham theerkum Pancheti” means “Starvation solving Pancheshti.”
In the sanctum sanctorum of this Chennai temple, both Agastheeswarar and Goddess Anandhavalli are present, allowing devotees a satisfying dharshan of both deities from the same spot. Agastheeswarar, the main deity of this Shivan temple, is a Swayambu lingam, believed to predate Agasthiar’s arrival and named after his worship. Goddess Anandhavalli, made of Maragatha stone, has three eyes and stands with her left leg in front to drive away evil forces.
Agasthiar installed a Durga Yantra in front of her to calm her, containing the ‘Sapthasee’ mantra of Devi Mahathmeeyam. The yantra’s gods are depicted in the Rajagopuram’s ceiling sculptures. Verses in Abirami Bhattar’s Abirami Andhadhi and Aadhi Sankarar’s Soundharya Lahari glorify the three-eyed Anandhavalli.
Worship Benefits:
It is sacred to take a dip in Agasthia Theertham and worship Agastheeswarar on Vaikasi full moon.
Pradhosham is significant here, clearing curses of Indhran, Indhrani, and Viswaroopan.
Known as Annadhana Kshetram due to King Mithrathuvasan's selfless act. Annadhanam here brings significant spiritual benefits.
Special rituals during Ragu kalams on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays remove marriage obstacles and evil forces.
The south-facing Rajagopuram marks it as a Parihara sthalam, driving away evil forces and obstacles.
Worshipping Ambal here removes Navagraha dhoshas.
Worshipping the Ishta lingam brings peace, grants wishes, and success in court cases.
Performing Aditya Hrudayam Parayanam on Sundays to this Chennai Agathiyar Temple, "Siva Suryan" will nullify health related problems and diseases.
