  • Want to grow some Christmas palm trees (adonidia merrillii) from seed? You're in luck because these guys are super simple. I show you how I did it!
    All you need is water, coconut coir, perlite, and some patience. Maybe some heat, too.
    Christmas palm trees are native to southeast asia, but you can find them in your local garden centers during the summer months. They can be grown indoors or out, but they aren't winter hardy so you'll likely need to bring them back in as soon as it gets cold.

    I have more than 20 of these palms in my yard and I’m constantly cutting the seed bunches off because when they fall to the ground they attract wild chickens who dig up EVERYTHING!. So I literally have thousands of these seeds every month so why not grow them. FYI the easiest palm seed to germinate are Washingtonian palms. Just pick up the seeds off the ground a lightly cover with sand, wet them and in a few weeks they sprout.

    • @HaniyaRae
      @HaniyaRae  Před 2 lety

      Oh yeah!! I know people also sell the seeds on eBay, you could definitely try that, too! I should try Washington palms. I was trying to stick to palms that could survive in indoor conditions since I don’t live in a tropical climate but might branch out

    • @HaniyaRae
      @HaniyaRae  Před 2 lety

      Actually, don't go to that link. It doesn't look legitimate on further inspection

  • @joeyboy676
    @joeyboy676 Před 2 lety +2

    Lol I have over 30 full size Christmas palms in my yard and I throw thousands of these seeds away all the time to keep the wild chickens away. But the little seedlings that grow under the trees won’t take if you try to transplant to a pot. And once 12” tall it’s impossible.

    • @HaniyaRae
      @HaniyaRae  Před 2 lety +1

      Ha! You could make a bit of money if you cleaned the seeds and sold them on eBay. Or the small seedlings. :-)

    • @HaniyaRae
      @HaniyaRae  Před rokem +1

      Sure, you can clean the fruit off of the seed and that should help limit chances of rot/fungus. But they should be very hardy to just stick in soil and wait for germination, provided they have heat and humidity

    • @HaniyaRae
      @HaniyaRae  Před 2 lety +1

      hey there, i'm using regular potting soil with added perlite at the moment. They're fairly hardy so I think as long as you have proper drainage, they should be good!

    You didn't mention if you have to take the pulp off the seeds like I have seen for other Palm seeds. Is that necessary for the Christmas palm seeds?

    • @HaniyaRae
      @HaniyaRae  Před 2 lety

      Hm! I think the seller cleaned the pulp off for me -they were already husks when I got them. So I’d ask the seller to clean them or clean them off if you get them with the fruit on. I’m guessing that’s why I got them cleaned!

    • @topdog417
      @topdog417 Před 2 lety +1

      @@HaniyaRae thanks. They’re from my own palms. I’ll take the pulp off then. I’m guessing it really doesn’t matter since Mother Nature doesn’t clean them right? : )

    • @HaniyaRae
      @HaniyaRae  Před 2 lety

      @@topdog417 oh funny! I mean…you could also let the fruit drop and let it seed on the ground, then just dig the seedlings up? Thinking about how Mother Nature might terminate them, haha. You could also do an experiment with half fruit and half no fruit and see if there’s a germination rate difference! I’d love to know.

    • @topdog417
      @topdog417 Před 2 lety +1

      So I took off pulp and planted half in planters and half in large zip lock bags in moist soil. 3 weeks later the ones in planter haven’t sprouted yet. The ones in bags amazingly sprouted very quickly. Have transplanted into planters and are growing super well
