Sailing to the USA on an ESTA Visa - Part 2 | Sailing with Six | S2 E31

  • In this episode we sail from Isla Mujeres in Mexico to Miami, Florida in the USA. We find out if all the work of flying to the USA to start our ESTA visa days and get an I-94 will actually work when we arrive on our private sailboat.
    It's a tricky journey at the beginning as we encounter lightening and ships, lots of ships as we transit across the Gulf stream. Then the Gulf stream actually gives us great assistance as we approach Miami.
    On approach we use the CBP roam app and initially get denied by the CBP officer simply because we hadn't anchored yet. We see loads of similarities between Miami waterways and our home port of Southport, Gold Coast, Australia with all the powerboats and wake they put off as we transit through to find a safe anchorage.
    We hope this helps other sailors who intend to visit the USA on an ESTA visa.

    Welcome to the USA! If you're going up the coast, I do hope you stop in St. Augustine, the oldest permanent settlement in the USA. They have a great anchorage and you could easily spend 4 days seeing all the historical sites!! (I was born and raised in St. Augustine)! You must see the Fort, walk down St. George St., go to the Oldest House, and check out the LightHouse!! Walk through the Rotunda of the Ponce de Leon Hotel, which is now Flagler College, and O'Steens Restaurant has the BEST fried shrimp in town. You'll have to pay cash and call your order in, then take your togo order to the LightHouse picnic tables or back to the boat to eat. I highly recommend a stop in St. Augustine!! Enjoy!!!

      If looking for a longer tour/sail and seeing some interior areas try sailing up the coast and doing some or all of the great circle route. It goes up through NYC and down the Mississippi back to gulf coast of Florida. Should be info on the web. Welcome to the States! Hope its amazing.

    I have watched them all, but this episode made me very happy. I am an American. The effort, the money, the patience and the joy you shared with your children to come to America was heartwarming for me. We have a silly country it may seem sometimes, but it is a beautiful country with many beautiful people to meet and beautiful things to see. If you wanna see the craziest of all, Las Vegas NV, give me a shout! We have the room!

    Looks like the final stage of your entry into the U.S. went pretty well. Always a delight to come along with the Happy Days crew. Seems that the children can now manage the affairs of the boat pretty well on their own. The rope swing was lots of fun. Not your best catch _this_ time, Archie, but don't give up! Time to hoist the stars and stripes. Have fun in South Florida.

    I know it is after the fact now but there is a ferry from nassau Bahamas to Miami that only takes like 4 hours each way. You could have anchored in Nassau taken the ferry in and back on the same for like $180 a person.

    You are still nowhere near me, I live in west Texas nowhere near enough water to sail in.
    I watch several channels from sailing families, a few days ago one of them named off three or four boats behind them and one of the names was "Happy Days". However I don't remember which channel it was.

    The younger set are sure displaying real grom hairstyles now! Having been to well over 100 countries, for work or tourist reasons, or to visit family, I can fully empathise with your frustration with the endless rigmarole involved in entering the US these days. I think the top prizes for consistantly unfriendly and obstreperous border officials must go to: Saudi Arabia, the US, and Iran. I love the US, and have lived & worked there in the 80s and 90s, but I have avoided the hassle of going there for the past decade. You'll no doubt have fun there, though. I'd prefer to be sailing my old pre-war Bermudan ketch along the coast of BC this time of year. Can the kids do any astral navigation yet?

    • @sailingwithsix

    9:35 I'm probably getting too old and too soft but I can't help thinking it'd be SO funny if he spilled a few cold drops on that tiny tummy.😀The wiggle and giggle would be SO charming... and maybe an accidental squeal. 😀

    I don't understand - when you cross the land boarder from Canada or Mexico you haven't arrived by an "Approved Carrier", you just pay $4 for an I94 form.

    Hello, do you happen to know whether it would have been possible to enter the US in U.S. Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico and then sail directly to the US ? Also did you need some kind of cruising permit to sail along the East coast ? I did that a long time ago (1984) and I did have to get a Cruising Permit that was only given to a limited number countries

    • @sailingwithsix
      @sailingwithsix  Před 11 měsíci

      Yes you could enter at US Caribbean islands and your 90 days esta visa would start then. Yes we got a cruising permit so we could freely move around the USA once there. Easy to arrange. Otherwise you must check in at each port.
