I recall long ago as a young music student at Princeton University and Westminster Choir College, discovering RVW. It was so incredible and magical. Like the Oxford Elegy, I wandered through the campuses, dreaming, singing with the men and boys at Trinity Parish, the great University Chapel, and me - a lowly boy from Kentucky horse farms of the blue grass. Studying with the likes of Dr. Eric Routley, Jim Litton, Sir John Guest and Sir David Willcocks among others. I was also the principal viola of the University Orchestra. All this I experienced in one semester because I was too poor to stay or ashamed of my poverty to speak up. And yet I recall so much in every detail; slate sidewalks, black squirrels, cold rainy days and the golden red leaves of the fall. I was in a paradise but had to return to a lowly earth back in Kentucky.

I spent two of the best years of my life in Kentucky, Ft. Knox area. Seen from the eyes of an outsider, the beauty of Kentucky's landscapes and the kindness of the people there rival anywhere else I've ever been. I remember driving near the Ohio river in the spring and seeing meadows full of tiger lilies. Kentucky will always have a special place in my heart.

Tadpoling in the spring, scrumping in the late summer and early autumn, got a thick ear or two from that. Also had to help out at home. We lived two and a half miles from Nantwich, the nearest shops. As my father had no car at that time I made the round trip twice a week with my mother's shopping list in my pocket. Wonderful times!!

I know PRECISELY what you mean...
Ever since I was a preteen, I've DEARLY loved England... But, to be more specific, it was Victorian and Edwardian England, the refinement and politeness/kindness of many people, esp. in the country areas and in the north and west parts of England, etc. Also the old cultures of Oxford, Eton, Cambridge, etc. The bookish, scholarly side of Britain, C. S. Lewis, Tolkien, Dickens, the Bronte sisters, Lewis Carroll, even Darwin, etc. Vaughan-Williams has some connections here, I know. (I think he might have been distantly related to Darwin...)
There is still a part of me that longs (more) for the society of the more refined, kinder sorts from Britain and elsewhere, etc., and when I hear of British soccer hooligans, etc., so many others like them, its like a slap in the face of older sensibilities in Britain, that still ought to prevail, etc. 😑😑😑😑😑😑😑

Mr. Harris - Really extraordinary the way you've tied together these 19th Century John Grimshaw paintings of London with RVW's music!!
The sailing ships are particularly appealing, in terms of highlighting Britain's maritime dominance in the world at that time.
    Again, great job!!

I wonder who the lady was that is seen 1.25 and in many pictures? I wonder if she ever got to her destination or perhaps she was returning?. I love the warmth of the light in shops compared to the wet and gloomy streets, you can just imagine going into these shops to be greeted by a friendly face and regional accent. You can just imagine JAG perched on some street corner with easel working away and the people not realising that they are being captured forever, Ghosts. Truly nostalgic

That's pretty much how I feel when I look at paintings like these. Other times, other lives, each with their own story to tell. And this moment in their existence lives on thanks to Mr. Grimshaw. Like you, I would love to be able to walk into the painting and go into one of those shops.

THE ATMOSPHERE CAPTURED IN THESE ICONIC PAINTINGS IS TRULY GRIPPING. I COULD EASILY STEP INTO ANY OF THESE STREET SCENES. IT WOULD SOON TRANSFORM MY IDEAS OF WHAT LIFE UNDER THOSE CONDITIONS MIGHT BE. I DO REMEMBER GAS-LIT STREET LAMPS, AND THAT STRANGE MELLOW YELLOW LIGHT, WHICH HAD VERY LIMITED RANGE. BEYOND 10 FEET, IT WOULD BE ALMOST TOO DARK TO SEE A FACE IN DETAIL. THE COLD AND DAMP ATMOSPHERE WAS CONSTANT IN THE BIG CITY, AND ALMOST NEVER WITHOUT FOG BY SOME DEGREE. THE SHOP LIGHTS ARE WONDERFULLY CAPTURED--MOSTLY OIL LIT. THE HANSOM CABS, AND MEN IN TOP HATS COMPLETE THE VICTORIAN IDEAL OF THE MODERN DAY DREAMER.

Shoot me down in flames, but i think the orchestral arrangement is rather lovelier than the choral/vocal version - yes, I know it's Shakespeare, but some of the texts, it seems to me, are not well chosen and get in the way of the music. This version of the Serenade and Grimshaw's paintings marry so well; these images are always a joy for anyone brought up in Yorkshire. Scarborough's there, Whitby too, and believe me, it takes a real artist to make my home town of Hull look so lovely - twice! (see 9.50 and 10.50). Thanks for this inspired concept, David Harris.
