Hi everybody! I'm back with a new video and this one is made in collaboration with Roland (sponsored). They sent me the new Aira Compact synths to try out and the one I fell in love with right away was the J-6. I found a really lovely Juno-60 sounding preset that I show of in this video. I programmed a short sequence to go along with the samples on my Volca Sample and the rest is history!
I also hooked up the Volca FM to the Aira J-6 for some additional melody support. The Juno-60 sound combined with the FM synthesies of the Volca FM is a really nice combo. I glued it all together with some Valhalla Shimmer reverb and I think it turned out really nice!

There I was in the 80's... 5 year-old boy discovering Robocop, the arcade game, with my father, in downtown. Punks walking around... a store of piano keyboards. This music brings that memory and fills up my soul with nostalgia. Thank you for bringing that time back, at least, in my mind. I miss my father so much... and it1's been 2 days I don't see him... but I know his time is coming and I miss him already. I'm gonna be with him as much as I can.

Of all the j6 vids out there, this might be the best showcase of how awesome it can really sound and perform. Others have done well at displaying it's functions, but you really set it free. I was on the fence, but now I think I need to add it to the collection. Thanks for sharing!

Very nice!! I would like to rebuild your set of equipment. So bought some Korgbgear and the Aira, however how did you hook up those ??
Thanks Bas! The audio is going it my usb audio interface (Scarlett 2i2) and is recorded in FL Studio where I also add FX live to the sound. The J-6 has audio inputs so in this video I connected the audio from the FM into the J-6 and then sent that to my usb audio interface. The sync signal is also being sent from the J-6 to the Korg Volcas so everything stays in tempo.
Am Looking for small/tiny portable synths to pair up with the sp404mk2.....this thing is looking ever more interesting😉

So inspired by this. Do you have to program anything or it goes automatically back the arp? Can Volca keys do this by any chance?
Hi! All the notes are generated by the Roland J-6. There are knobs on the J-6 that let you switch from arp to chords via it different style and variation modes. I'm not too familiar with the sequencer on the Volca Keys so I'm not sure. Btw, the Volca Keys have to be modded with a midi output to be able to send notes to another device like the Volca FM. Hope that answers your question.

Hi! The sequence on the J-6 is only playing one note at the time so that leaves room for me to play up to 3 additional notes on top of it. Maybe your J-6 is already playing 4 notes so that's why you can't add any more by playing the little keyboard?

I visited to see the J-6 in action but instead found your music captivating! I've been trying to figure out how you played over the sequence and then the transition back the sequence at 1:15 ...Perhaps a certain combination of Style, Variation and Beats? I realize We're going back one year here but do you recall how you nailed playing lead over the sequence so beautifully?
Hey! I don't remember the exact settings but the sequence I programmed into the J-6 is only using 1 note/voice per step so that leaves 3 voices to be played on top of that. And that same sequence is also being played by the Volca FM because I hade the midi output of the J-6 going into it.

Other than the Shimmer are you doing any other post-production to this? Are any of the instruments panned, compressed, EQ’d, etc?
Hmm I might have done some EQ:ing. There is a limiter on the master channel for sure.

Thanks! Yes that's right. I'm sending the same notes to the Volca FM.
wow, this is a great demo, only one issue with this synth
there is no way to use automation to change even the limited params of the synth
so come on Roland, in 2022 every hardware or software synth has midi cc to control the synth parameters, give us a firmware update that allows us to do the above.
Yeah that is a shame! I really miss that feature. Not being able to use pitch bend is a real shame.

Si! You can connect the J-6 with midi to your VST.
I don't have the j6. I liked the sound of the arp, but I understand that you are telling me that the sound comes from j6. I only have vst instruments..so I can't get your sound. the notes you put in the sequence are very nice too. Congratulations and thanks for answering.

what do you use to mix the outputs?
A Focusright Scarlet 18i8 usb audio interface. The Volca FM goes into the Roland J-6 which then goes into the usb interface and the Volca Sample also goes into that usb interface.

The sounds are coming from the J6 but also from the Volca FM and Volca Sample. The J6 is triggering the Volca Sample via midi out.

Music Hardware industry is so slow 🦥 It passed 10 years and nobody done a real competitor to OP-1 (maybe Polyend done something a bit similar), nobody done competitors to Volcas. Just now Roland and Behringer finally woke up and preparing something etc.
The J6 has no correlation though as an instrument to Korg.
