- During week 7 of the 1985 NFL season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers played the Miami Dolphins down at the Orange Bowl. And in the fourth quarter, with the Buccaneers driving down the field, fans in the stadium experienced something that they never would've possibly expected, when the Orange Bowl completely collapsed.

It's a miracle that no one was hurt or killed during this event.
Because it never happened. I can't even find any information about this on either the Wikipedia pages for 1985 dolphins or the Miami Orange Bowl!
Can I mention the fact that the Orange Bowl scoreboard had a cigarette ad on it? Different era, yo.

“No one was injured or killed” Praise the Lord for that! A similar near disaster happened in a playoff game in Baltimore when the Colts were still there. The Steelers were blowing out the Colts (40-14 final score I think) when a private Cessna crashed into the upper deck of the stadium, but no one got hurt because most home fans had left the stadium because of the blowout score. If it had been a close game, people might have died. Note: This comment was posted before he mentioned the Colts incident....

What's ironic is that as a fan, you never want to have your team blown out like that. But in the case of the Colts-Steelers game - it was actually a good thing - lives were possibly saved _by the score_ !
As a Colts fan watching on TV in 1976, I remember that. The incident occurred just after the game, but before the broadcast signed off.
Even scarier: If the Cubs and the Blue Jays had been in the World Series in 1989, then half a million people would have died in the earthquake on October 17.
It sounds to me like someone SPIKED the Orange Bowl into the ground WAY LESS than 39.6.
This is very similar to what happened 6 years later on the island of Corsica (though with deadlier consequences) before the French Cup semifinal between Bastia & Marseille. Many fans (especially local ones that were there to support Bastia) had arrived early so that they could prepare themselves for this massive match which was easily the biggest in Bastia's history. To make this match even more meaningful, Marseille were one of the best teams in not just France but in Europe at the time as Marseille would win the first Champions League a year later & Bastia really wanted to pull off one of the biggest upsets in French soccer history. However just before kickoff as the two teams were walking out onto the field, a section of the stadium collapsed resulting in 18 people losing their lives & 2300 were injured. It was later determined that the section was overfilled with fans (2350 fans were put into a section that could hold 1700) because Bastia wanted a sell out crowd for this match & the weight of the extra fans caused the section to collapse. Furthermore the section was already showing signs of structural instability before the match so Bastia should have closed off the section & moved fans to a less crowded section. For those wondering if the match was still played, it was not. In fact the entire competition was cancelled after this incident. It is the worst stadium disaster in French soccer history.
It was even worse during the mid 70s. Opponents went 0 for 31 between October 1971 and September 1975 trying to beat the Dolphins at home-the all time NFL record. The OB once Shula got there in 1970 became the one place opposing teams did NOT want to go to because it meant an L.
A good part of those wins were against Buffalo, who lost all their games against Miami that decade.
@@ivantheteribul Yep-0 for 20. It took until Sept 7, 1980 for Buffalo to beat Miami..the fans at Rich Stadium tore the goalposts down after the game and some even brought a piece up to Ralph Wilson's box.

@@andrewpadaetz5549 for the NFC, the team then known as the Redskins won 18 games against the Lions over three decades from 1968 to 1999, while the conference's longest streak involving division opponents belongs to the 49ers' 17 wins over the Rams from 1990 to 1999.
It wasn't even the first game of the decade in that stadium to end up with that exact final score, so that concrete collapse very well could have happened earlier.

Miami was lucky that it didn’t end similarly to the Heysel Stadium Disaster that occurred several months prior where 39 soccer (or association football, as people on the internet like to argue about what the hell this sport is called) fans (mostly Italian ex-pats and supporters of Juventus) trying to escape a band of hooligans were killed when a section of the stadium wall collapsed.
Worse was the similar Hillsborough Disaster where 97 died.
@@joeylawn36111 Hillsborough was simply caused by people being packed into a single section of a stadium.
The decrepit state of Heysel Stadium in 1985 was also a major factor in what led to the disaster.
Other notable structural collapses of sports stadiums:
Kingdome in 1994 - Four tiles fell from the roof only 30 minutes before gates were to open for a Mariners game. They closed the Kingdome for repairs (a crane accident killed two workers) and so the Mariners had to play the rest of their home games on the road; which because of the strike, said trip got shortened. Also meant that the Seahawks had to play their two preseason and first 3 regular season home games at Husky Stadium
Yankee Stadium II in 1998 - A 500 pound concrete & steel beam fell into the lower level stands during batting practice, resulting in that night's game against the Angels being postponed and the game the next day being played at Shea Stadium (a unique doubleheader as that Yankees/Angels game was at 1205 and a Mets/Cubs game was at 740. The Yankees dressed in the old Jets locker room)
Olympic Stadium in Montreal 1991 - 55 ton concrete beam fell onto a walkway so the stadium was closed for repairs; which forced the Expos to play their last 13 home games on the road.
Hartford Civic Center in 1978 - Due to design flaws and snow accumulation, the roof collapsed. The venue was closed for two years because of repairs, forcing the Whalers to relocate to Springfield, MA.
Kemper Arena in 1979 - Part of the roof collapsed in a storm with heavy wind and rain. Forced the Kings to play most of the 79-80 season at Municipal Auditorium.
Several disasters occurred in the days when ballparks were built of wood instead of concrete and steel. A brawl that started on the field at Philadelphia Baseball Grounds in 1894 resulted in a fire that destroyed the ballpark and part of the surrounding neighbourhood. The new park, popularly known as Baker Bowl, experienced a bleacher collapse in 1903 that killed 12 people and injured 232. A collapse of the lower-deck extension in 1927 resulted in a stampede of fans that injured 50, with one man dying from a heart attack.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway allowed homemade scaffolding (selling cheap standing room) on the premises until one such structure collapsed during the 1960 Indy 500, killing 2 spectators and injuring as many as 82.
2010 - The Metrodome's inflatable roof collapses under the weight of the snow
2008 - Georgia Dome was struck by a tornado during the SEC Basketball Tournament. Some of the structure on the upper side of the building collapsed. The game between Miss State and Alabama was delayed for over an hour and they finished the game eventually, but the following game was Kentucky-Georgia and it was postponed. They moved the tournament to Alexander Coliseum (now McCamish Pavilion) on Georgia Tech's campus and the winner of the UK-UGa game had to play twice that Saturday. Georgia won the tournament as a 12-seed that weekend.
This game highlighted the best version of uniforms for both of these teams! Classic!

I heard of this story. In the 80's I got to visit my relatives in Miami a lot. I got to go to the Orange Bowl in 84 and 85. As a kid I noticed that the concrete had a lot of cracks and flakes that broke off. Never really thought of it until the floor gave way.

Though decrypt, it was a tough place for opposing teams. As pats fan they had a very long losing streak at the OB until the 1985 afc title game also its long time home of the Miami Hurricanes. Wish the U stayed at the Orange Bowl cause they aren't the same since moving to Hard Rock which is another long drive for fans coming from Coral Gables.
As a Bills fan, the Orange Bowl was a house of horrors. My Bills went 2-18-1 there.

I was 4 when this game took place, but while I've known about this game for a long time, I never heard about the incident discussed here. Thank goodness nobody was hurt, let alone killed. As for how many fans were there, the game was blacked out in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach DMAs, so maybe it sold out too late for CBS to send it to those markets' CBS affiliates.

I've been to many games at the orange bowl. All Hurricanes games, that place would shake like nothing else. Wild atmosphere! I loved the OB!
There was nothing like the Orange Bowl. The Dolphins never had a home field advantage like ever again.
For some reason I thought this incident took place during the Monday night game vs Chicago. I appreciate the video helping me clear that up. I thought they broke ground on Joe Robbie Stadium in December of '85 but maybe I'm wrong. The Orange Bowl was cool as far as a home field advantage for the 'Phins and I loved the way the seating almost felt like you were on top of the action but at that point she was pretty much a relic. I thought the Orange Bowl was an old WPA Project from the New Deal but god that place had an atmoshpere and vibe!

In the postseason the Dolphins came back from a surprise 21-3 deficit against an 8-8 Browns team to win 24-21. Then in the AFC Championship game the Patriots ran over the Dolphins in Miami 31-14.
I Googled Orange Bowl collapse and there's no mention of it. It is mentioned that it was demolished in 2008.

Regarding the home field advantage of the Orange Bowl: the heat and humidity of Miami often led to Dolphins opponents wearing down by the fourth quarter. Larry Csonka even said as much in an episode of "America's Game".
That’s why Miami always wore white at home.
One of the few times Miami lost a home game at the old Orange Bowl was in early January 1982 in an instant classic between San Diego Chargers and the Miami Dolphins in the AFC Divisional Round game. A contest that nearly went to two over times and had several near-wins or false finishes where Chargers blocked a couple Uve Von Shaman's FG tries before Rolf Benirske finally nailed the game-winning FG with about 1:30 left in the first OT.
It's considered one of the greatest games in NFL history. Sports Illustrated nicknamed it, "Epic in Miami", " The Game No One Deserved to Lose". It was also one of the few times Shula's Dolphins' ever lost in the Orange Bowl and they weren't wearing their white jerseys but the aqua blue jerseys for this game which got so hot, heavy and humid that Chargers TE Kellen Winslow began having severe stomach and leg cramps and dehydration during the game and was so exhausted after the game had ended, he had to be helped off the field by two teammates.

That team was also very good, not great but good. Marino was young and if you've never been to the OB, that place was insane. It shook and felt like an earthquake when the fans would all stomp.

In 1981 i started following them and wow what a run it was between 81-85. I saw many home games. Their regular season record was 56-16-1 including playoffs they were 62-21-1 overall , 4 Division Titles , 2nd AFC 1982 (strike shortened season), 11 Playoff Games including 3 AFC Championships and 2 SB appearances.
Fortunately never saw them lose to bucs at home - that i can remember but the Orange Bowl has its own 'Mandela Stories'. Now concrete falls and Nobody got hurt..??????

Last game I saw there was in the late 90s Famu v U Miami. That stadium was made of aluminum and would sway when people got going. I also saw a practice scrimmage game Bucs v Dolphins there earlier. I don't remember the stadium collapse, but I do remember those Steve DeBerg days. I grew up in Tampa Bay and Miami during that time. Dan Marino was more popular in Tampa Bay than the Bucs were.
I wonder about this with the college games where everyone jumps in unison over band over again. The loads on the structure have got to be really high with that many people jumping at the same time over and over again.
I started watching NFL football and the Dolphins when they were in the Superbowl against San Francisco. First game ever! I watched. I don't remember them talking about the stadium collapse. First i heard on here.
There are few Dolphins fans who, if they were alive during the Orange Bowl years, will tell you they DON'T miss the Orange Bowl. I would take the Orange Bowl back, even with all the amenities Hard Rock offers.
If and when you get JG7 back up and running you could do a documentary about the collapse of the walkways at the Kansas City Hyatt in 1981 that killed over 100 people. I read that if it weren’t for the MLB players strike occurring at that time more people would have died. I’ll leave it at that, since the more details I give, the less of a need you’ll have to make the video.
What I know about this is it occurred on a Friday evening in July 1981 (several other bad things happened fortuitously in that month as well). It would depend possibly on whether the Royals would have played at home that weekend if not for the strike. It would be comparable to the 1989 earthquake during the World Series and traffic wasn't as bad on the freeways that collapsed in that situation.

Say what you will about the OB, I'll take it over Hard Rock (or whatever that stadium in Miami Gardens is called this week). There's a reason the longest home winning streak in both the NFL and the NCAA are at the same stadium. The same stadium the greatest NFL team ever ('72 Dolphins) and the greatest college team ever (2001 Miami Hurricanes) played at. That stadium in Miami Gardens is a stadium for mediocre teams, the OB was a stadium for champions...

That’s my birthday. I think I was grounded, so I wasn’t allowed to watch tv. I guess that’s why I don’t remember that happening. My parents were hosting a Monday night football party all season. I’m really surprised this is the first I’ve heard about this.

I thought this was a click-bait title until I viewed the video. I was living in Orlando and a huge Dolphins fan when I this happened. We never had one inkling of this in Central Florida. It is a total miracle that no one was killed or injured during this mishap.
