"detached, egoless, focused on whats important, not living the hype, not trying to follow some lifestyle, but doing what you think is important, focusing on core value, ruthlessly prioritizing and getting people who believe in these things"
the grass is green
What a joke
This is an fkn masterclass
3 difficult and hard problems any consumer product has to deal with...
1) How do you get people in the front door.
2) How do you get them to an aha moment as quickly as possible and
3) How do you deliver a core product value as often as possible.
Employee: "I got my MBA from Harvard."
Chamath: "Get the fuck out of my office."
love the way this dude talks . straight forward no bs.
agsn can’t do all the work for you bud..
tldr: fuck all nothing
If anyone is wondering, the guy from eBay he wanted to fire is/was Alex Schultz and he also has a great yc talk on growth
The absence of context... the root of all misunderstanding.
Short and simple. It takes heart and drive with honesty. And you have to be smart....or have secret sauce.
amazingly sharp minded individual with great advice..thank you
36:28 "We had a culture fortunately of experimenting and trying a ton of stuff. And we celebrated failure more than we really celebrated success."
amazing insight on not valuing the short term sucess, but focussing on long term success. Chamath is great.
Surprise! We built this core technology and company 20 years ago and our updated digital product and business plan hasn't changed all that much. We just had to have the tenacity and courage to wait for the window to open And by golly we were tapping at every window and door we could think of to see if it would open. We went up against others, even Nestle (who bought their way into the deal and NEVER serviced their promise, btw). Our path to success is practically unheard of! But that courage and dedication is finally starting to pay off.
This video is incredible. Thank you for posting it.
Your voice ! Your accent! Your dress sense! I can go on writing! Every thing is Just perfect! 🌞🌙⭐️
Chamath. We're about the same age. I understand everything you are lecturing. With respect. I'm poor and living a good Rich ways. But I understand you.
3:50 “I don’t use the Twitter”
this guy is amazing.
13:56 Too true.
Are there any good videos on initial customer acquisition methods for start-ups ?
good talk yo! peace.
Very insightful clip! Thanks chamath!
This guy is a genius of growth
It's because he knows that other people feel the same way about a product. Who tf is going to sit around for days waiting for a dopamine hit? People want it instantly, thus you have the massive success of Tiktok.
It's that simple: "how do you make someone get an 'ahaa!' moment ASAP?" Literally the key to any business.
He’s a genius in everything 😬
thank you
simply amazing
K Value: The letter K is for King, as in King got Kandy Krushed today in its earnings report because it was not able to deliver long term value on its one game that gave it an IPO.
16:27 - discipline of Do you really know what you are building and why?
16:31 - how to marry things that may not be intuitive to people - but deliver value?
Excellent video
If you only need to remember one thing from this video 👇
"Growth = Measure some shit, Try some shit, Test some more shit, Throw the stuff that doesn't work" It's (really) not that complicated!
Questions to always keep in mind
1) What is the thing that people are here to do?
2) What is the aha moment that they want?
3) Why can I not give that to them as fast as possible?
*Unemotional and detachment towards work results, is one of the great teachings of Bhagavad Gita.*
Really? That's hard to imagine.
@@primal2k7 Not really. It basically means focus on what you can do, and if you know you did it well- it is not necessary to worry about the outcome or allow the outcome to affect your future results negatively
@@primal2k7 An analogy: the only thing you are entitled to is the skill you use to release the balloon, but once it leaves your hands-it’s completely not up to you-so why worry?
Measuring, testing, and trying things.
What a "beautiful mind" Thank you for posting.

These guys confessing on record must be tried in court and given a timespan to rectify their mistakes failing to do so, should be put in jail. Look at what the world has come to, if u exploit / trick someone for a $100, u'll be arrested. Here are these shameless rich buggers claiming on record that they exploited millions and they are celebrated!.
If they do something substantial to mitigate and rectify their mistakes they can left free or even awarded, but if they fail they must be punished as they were responsible as they claim in the video for what social media has become today.
But I do appreciate what seems to be a change in his ways. But I can't fully trust him without further scrutiny.
Thank you
YES
I wish you would show the slides that he's talking about.

Thanks dornish!
Straight up GOLD
You said it friend
this dude is the GOAT at storytelling
I believe it's one of the very first courses Udemy had put to gain traction. They nailed it by bringing Chamath.
what do you mean by first Udemy course?
20:15 "Five minutes Im on it"
We all know how this turned out XD
Are the slides available somewhere?
"and I own the Warriors.." lol
Minority stakeholder. He should have said part-owner. Joseph Lacob and Peter Guber own most of the Warriors.
@@Camelotskin Regardless of his Stake, he owns the warriors with combinations of other investors.
@@samjain6555 Still that is a misleading statement. All part-owners of a company say "Co-Own." The Golden State Warriors are enormously large to say you own them. Anyway I like him.
he owns like 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000001% of the warrariors..but talks like he owns 100%, check wikipedia for the actual owners. hint: he's not on the list.
Just casually.. remarking.
Brilliant
This video was uploaded in Jan 2013, but does anyone know what date (even approximate) this talk was recorded? Thanks in advance!

7:35 That mystery guy is Alex Schultz :)
Ben Weeks 29:37 shout out to Alex in this talk if you don't believe me :)
Ben Weeks really? so the relationship between chamath and alex is sucks?
I was gonna ask that! Thanks for confirming LOL
10:19 things that scale but focus on this don't be notice yet
In the arena 🙃
Who cares whether Chamath is likable or not! He is one of the most important speakers that we've had at a GrowthHackers Conference because we can all learn a ton from this guy. I don't think anyone can claim there is a more impressive growth story than Facebook has had. He and Alex Schultz are the guys who led the charge to make it happen. I personally love the passion with which he makes his points. The only thing I've ever heard him say that I didn't violently agree with is that "Growth Hacking is BS." But that's just an opinion about a term...
Couldn't agree more, Sean. He insights aren't packaged "nicely" but he is able to provide incredible clarity.
Are you the real Sean Ellis? If so I get why you don't agree GH is BS...=)
Rachel - I've thought about it and I'm starting to believe that growth hacking is BS... Not really :)
Growth hacking is programmers thinking they invented "direct response marketing"
Justin - Except that I coined the phrase and I'm a marketer. Growth hacking is about taking a direct response marketing approach and applying it to every step of the customer journey. Us marketers have never been trusted to do that in tech companies. It requires a coordinated effort across multiple disciplines.
6:18. Best part
As a fan of Chamath, I must ask, was he that much more buff last time or is it just me?
Russell Chan Haha i was thinking the same too! Such a gun & visionary!
Without fb I might never have viewed so many interesting photos of tuna-bake with side salad.

Hi Gagan, you haven't posted in a while, are you still active?
very smart, love it
How to bring people to the door? How to get them to the "aha" moment? How to provide them with the core product value again, and again, and again.
Difficult to grasp such videos where spaker is using slides but slides are not visible. 🙄. Eg where he talks about K values. For first 2 min, you don't know what alphabet he is talking about.
Owns the Warriors... I’m lost
Luck = preparedness + opportunity divided by timing.
Chamath dresses so much better now. lol
Back then this was a cool outfit
Probably hired an image consultant
21:08 the biggest key stone at Facebook at that time
Moved to silence... :)
audio please!
Addiction models
As if he's the ONLY guy responsible for it
I’m pretty sure this guy plays a LOT of poker. He mentioned it multiple times.
He played in the world poker championship look it up kinda crazy
Both these comments are interesting. I like poker but I love blackjack. The difference is there isnt necessarily an "edge" in poker since you can bluff and you "sell" yourself to a certain extent. Says a lot if you think into it
He’s so additive because he’s keeping it real ... without inhibitions ...
Like the SPAC scams he led retail investors into. He got rich and every one got poor. Exactly the opposite of what he preached with 'social capital'.
very interesting
nice
tell me more
can you give more illustration?
what should be the #1 take away from this vids?
Anybody Know when he will be publicly speaking again in Northern Ca?
Love you chamath 💕
What is K?
K is the virality factor. Read this: www.quora.com/What-is-the-definition-of-K-factor/answer/Jesse-Farmer
Anant Jain thanks a lot.
I had the same question.... Thanks Anant Jain
what was the letteR?
Facebook had 1.1 billion users in 2013
yolo
do things independent of short term feedback loop!!!
@9:50
This guy is the shit!!!
I feel like this happened with the CZcams algorithm. CZcams doesn’t update the algorithm with anecdotes and gut feeling, they test ideas and if the metrics increase they implement them. Problem is they didn’t realize they were optimizing a decision from years ago. The algo team was stuck in this feedback loop for their product thinking they had analyzed to such an extent no one would have the resources to compete. Then Tiktok comes along and disrupts the industry. Now my CZcams feed is flooded with 30 second clips as CZcams updates the algo to compete. It’s annoying as fuck but I’m glad TikTok came along to disrupt because CZcams’s algo was causing creators to appease the algorithm and it creates content that’s fucking similar and annoying. You have the algo team make updates and a million users creating trying to figure out what the algo wants. So is the algo team making something that the market actually wants or are they fooled due to creators doing a good job pumping the metrics. I think CZcams had a good idea, it took off, they optimize the algo thinking every increase or decrease in metrics is a direct result when there are actually a million variables why retention and viewership is actually changing. Then TikToc slips in and BAM, fucking algo collapse. Complexity on complexity of “why the fuck does our algo promote this shit again?”.
Can anyone help me with what he is referring to by "K"? Is he talking about K-means clustering?
I think it’s more like a placeholder variable. It’s used a lot in math, ex. Let k =
@@nelsonwang2753 actually I figured it out later. He was talking about this - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K-factor_(marketing)
slides?
Two years later the Golden State Warriors won an NBA final. This guy even knew how to grow a sports franchise.
a goldmine
Am I the only one that was thinking that he was way smaller? He is actually a tall guy
Same here
Your PERSONALITY equals your. REALITY.
Came up with that while I was watching this. Thought I would share
7 friends in 10 days
I'm one of the 7 billion non users. Always have been and always will be.🙂
He looks really tired compared to other videos lol
lol, in the beginning he said he was playing poker till late night. what a guy.
as good as he is, i find him pretty insufferable and his ego seems off the charts. really takes away from his message, imo.
