- A 44-minute film telling the story of Ringo and his poor look-a-like Ognir Rrats, narrated by George Harrison. Songs include: 1. "I Am The Greatest", 2. "Act Naturally", 3. "Yellow Submarine", 4. "You''re Sixteen" (with Carrie Fisher of Star Wars fame), 5. "With a Little Help from my Friends", 6. "Heart On My Sleeve" and 7. "Hard Times". Ognir Rrats is of course Ringo Starr spelled backwards.

...he's outlived everyone on the show.
ben wright Holy shit
Holy jesus
ben wright
Ognir is too powerful
He even outlived one of the sponsors.
Well I don't think outliving Art Carney was hard to do. :)
I love Georges conference in the begining w/ his shout out to The Rutles the comment about I think it was their trousers is a rutles reference
+zim1966 Yep,the trousers were from The Rutles,it was when they were "interviewing" the mother of The Rutles manger Leggy Mountbatten(the equivalent to Brian and Queenie Epstein)and they asked her what her son liked so much about the band. She replied "it was the trousers...they were so...tight...left nothing to the imagination..."
If you remember, instead of dying the way Brian did,Leggy, after a lonely and despondent night, sadly accepted a teaching post in Australia.
my god Princess Leia looks gorgeous in this
Agreed, she was smoking hot!
Ringo always had good comic timing. He was always the comedian of the group.
No he wasn't 😂
Watched this on tv as a kid when it aired with my mom, whose favorite Beatle was Ringo. RIP Mom.
"Little fool!"
"You mean LIVERPOOL!" OMG how hilariously bad...
It's supposed to be bad. This is vaudeville. You're supposed to groan.
Both the Firesign Theatre and the Monty Pythons (with Douglas fucking Adams!) were hired to write specials for Ringo. And yet *this* dross from the creator of the execrable Star Wars: Lifeday was the one that got made!?! Second only to Lennon's murder in unforgivable sins against Beatledom!!!
Totally love Ringo's dry humour and individual personality that has assisted him
to remain a unique character in the entertainment world.
''allymayful'' Yet he is considered to be the least important member of The Beatles and his appearance on Saturday Night Live sometime in the earlier 1980s was considered to be one in which the ratings for the show were the lowest ever.
(At least until Nancy Karrigan made an appearance on SNL).
@@obscurelyvague He was NEVER considered the least important in their early days of recording and touring. They were a team of equals. It would have been more challenging for Ringo when they stopped touring. He has kept busy with all sorts of interesting projects since they split up.
Ringo looks so good here, also fluffy George,i love them sm ❤
It's nice that John Ritter was able to be involved in this. He was a big Beatles fan - if you watch the Three's Company series he had a poster of the Beatles hanging in his room for the whole 8 series.
Ritter is just about the best thing in it!
I noticed that poster even as a little child....
Rest in peace Carrie.
Ed Bai Carrie and George and John, too!
Carrie Fisher (peace be upon her), had a great singing voice. She could have been a singer.
Been obsessed with the Beatles since I was 13. Can't believe I missed this when it aired on TV. Had no clue of it's existence until now. Awesome!!!
William Lewis
I remember seeing it when it first aired..
Yep, I missed it too, and am very surprised I didn't at least hear about it. Just seeing this now for the first time.
RIP George Harrison, Art Carney,Vincent Price, Mike Douglas, and John Ritter
Carrie Fisher too
my favorite eltaeb is egroeg
+baddmanaz I had to look in a mirror so I could understand what you were saying ~ :)
Same
Yasss I love Egroeg Nosirrah
I really like Laup yentraCcM but Nohj Nonnel's a very big rat tbh
Damn you with your coded language. Now I'll never know who your favorite is.
It sucks that Ringo didn’t have as much success as a solo artist as Paul, he really is a great musician!
Evan Bakerian Not so great a writer though.
The Star Wars Holiday Special has a rival :D There's still some good stuff in this though.
Carrie is so cute omg
Wow! I literally have not seen this since it first aired in '78. I remember my older brothers thought it was stupid, but I loved it! I felt so sorry for poor Ognir, glad it had a happy ending!
Your older brothers were right, you really should thank them.
Duff Baker HAHAHA. So true. It’s is the epitome of cringe. Carrie Fisher was at least nice to look at...despite being 16?! Fuckin’ creep
I love this! Ringo was great and George was too!
I don't think Ringo did any more variety shows, but several years later, he was the conductor on "Thomas The Tank Engine ".
Great! George and Ringo were awesome!
With a Little Help From My Friends is my fav part in this short film ☹💓
It’s sad to know that basically everyone except Ringo are all dead 😔
Angie Dickinson is still alive.
@@charleswinkler5998 he meant john -george and paul..hahahahahahaha... first...
@@mirkorussomanno4981 Paul isn't dead.
Different feeling watching this today with Carrie and Ringo in "You're 16" scene. And I think John Ritter passed away also. He's fantastic too.
Too bad John wasn't on this. This was when he was semi retired.
I love Ringo and I love this special. Of cause it's classical plot, but I love it😙
this is the best thing to ever happen to me. I laughed, I cried, I'm still laughing, long like king ringo. kingo. king, stay
I must have missed this in 1978
I recorded this special when it first aired in 1978 on one of the first VCR's available for sale. The recorder was VERY expensive at the time (I believe it cost me about $1500 and I had to finance it through a bank lol) Eventually this recorder was replaced by much newer and better models. I still have this cassette (and recorder) but it is gigantic and I have no machine to play it on. Thankfully I found this channel and I watched the special for the first time in all these years. Thank you DrRaptus for sharing.
love george's perm
This was enjoyable in a cheesy way. LOL I was 9 when I saw this the last time. It was terrific seeing old-timers like John Ritter, Vincent Price, Art Carney, Angie Dickinson, and Carrie Fisher in their younger days. I especially liked the "friends" section where Ringo sees Johnny Ray, Roy Orbison, and the other greats of the 50s. Makes me sad to see how time passes...
Poor Ognir :(
April 1978, I was 10 years old, and an absolute nut for anything Beatles....and somehow this got by me. I didn't even know it existed until accidentally stumbling upon it here...Amazing, plus it had Vincent Price who was also a big deal to 10 year old me as was Carrie Fisher...Scary movies and Star Wars were all the rage for me then...and still. It even looks like it was made for interests and big likes of 10 year old boys in 1978, which turns out to be the same interests and big likes for a 55 year old man in 2023 ...thanks for sharing
A good actor in search of real "All Starr Band Mates", nice to see him along with Carrie Fisher and Vincent Price, of course he has lots of fun playing drums and singing ... Ringo is 80 today!
45 years agosto and Ringo continues making music and get along quite well with people! The end of this show could be wonderful with all Fab Four at the end, imagine...
"Sure, Ringo always calls collect!" GEORGE!!!!! This is great! :D Thank you :)
I actually watched this when it was first aired! I can't believe I am seeing it again!
I love "Heart On My Sleeve"!
+TheHarmonicWheel Written by the team of Gallagher & Lyle signed to Apple Records back in 68
I saw this in 1978 on tv
I told people about it and nobody remembers it
Its still just as funny as i remember it
I’m here after listening to the Beatles Films podcast. Thanks Ed and Matt
"Julie Andrews?! I'm Ringo Starr! Listen to this you OLD DAFT PERSON!" Hahahah! That bit was hilarious! :D
Anyone else feel sad when they introduce Ognirr?
George: "I think it was the trousers." Rutles forever!! :D BTW I think it would be more accurate to refer to #3 as "Yellow Submarine in Pepperland", the George Martin arrangement that closes side 2 of the film LP.
I never saw this before. Thanks for the post.
The Beatle & the Princess.
This was when every Joe & his sister had a variety show. I didn't know that Ringo had a variety special.
i am so happy for youtube. thanks dr raptus! one of the few things i have never seen about the beatles.
this is sweet! back when you could suddenly see Ringo & George on TV. While its not a highly produced affair, kind of seeps into to 70s TV trash quality at times, but becuase its Ringo & George and undoubtably a few other cool people too, it does have a strange flair that makes it fit into the vein of Beatles films, which were never "real" films, but a somehwat odd and peculiar appearance of Beatles--those amazing big musical talents--on the screen. what saves them when it comes to public appearance was humor--sometimes an absurd sense of humor--wit and an a parody of an everyday average man's dealings. Ringo's strength was actually his percieved flaws, his imperfections are what pulled him through, made him the most heartfelt Beatle
Very good documentary. I'm happy to find it because I'd been watched on tv in the USA when I lived there in 1978. Rochester - New York
Very entertaining. Great stuff Ringo & Ognir!
It starts out with George making a reference to the Rutles! I have not seen this since it first aired. Thanks for posting it.
For those wondering, 1:09 is an "inside joke" for George Harrison. "I think it was the trousers" is a line repeated several times in All You Need Is Cash, a Rutles film released that same year, made by ex-Python Eric Idle. George makes a cameo in that film, as he and Eric were good friends.
I remember seeing both, and understanding neither, because I was 8 years old.
I’m surprised the album he was promoting with this special dido well. These songs are great!
I must have been cramming for finals when this aired on TV.
Ognir Rrats !!! That's hilarious. (I must've missed this when it was on tv. Thanks for sharing via CZcams.)
I remember seeing this as a kid.
Wow, Carrie Fisher was really cute!
Ooo... just when you think you've seen it all. Thanks for posting.
He played the drum sticks and sang Octopuses Garden!! LOL!!!
My oldest and only Son was born March 15 1978, I was 19 going on 20 and had been married for almost 2 years. There is no love greater than the love a Mother has for her Child................
Pretty good versions of oldies songs here! I´m the greatest, Act Naturally, You´re Sixteen...well, Yellow Submarine not so much.. Anyway, really better than what Paul did in Give My Regards to Broadway!
I thought I dreamed watching this back in 1978.Guess I was wrong.
I didn't expect to laugh so much! Thanks for keeping and sharing this.
Haha this is so 70's I love it.
PEAK Hairy Georgeson!
He's my favourite too !!!!!!!!
First time seeing this Thanks so very much for posting!
First time i see this show and i think is fantastic. Even Dee Murray is there...
THIS IS AMAZING
God is so good
Thanx,for preserving that,and,uploading this. 🥁
This is awesome! Thanks for sharing it!
The opening of this just feels like they put a camera in front of George and never told him he was acting.
I remember watching this when it first aired on television. I don't remember it being called Ringo, the TV Guide listed it as Prince and the Pauper.
Thanks for sharing this one!
My friend Lew in Des Moines used to go on & on about "Ognir Rrats"
Well now I know ... Zer0
+Richard Lee Schwinden What ever happened to old Ognir :)
Thank you for posting this. I watched it when it first aired on US TV.
Is that Carrie Fisher singing in this version of "You're Sixteen"?! Anyway, this special feels like the forgotten sibling to the Star Wars Holiday Special - same format, same year, same cheap production values, and a few cast overlaps, too!
I haven't seen this in over 43 years i was 8 years old when this came out
Thanks for posting. I haven't seen this since I watched it as a kid in 1978 on TV.
this was only ever shown on oz tv once havnt seen it since the 70s great post thank god for youtube cheers
To this day only a handful of people I have met understand the reference when I say, Ognir Rrats!
There's 44 minutes of my life I'll never get back...
yep
Thank You--I haven't seen this since April 26, 1978
I can not look away
Why does George look like Weird Al?
I'm afraid it's his perm period
This was the 70's!
Jimmy Page's unfortunate 1990's dyed comb-over period was worse.
He looked better in "All You Need Is Cash". I think it was the trousers...
yes poodle hair era george. l'm glad his hair was strong enough to survive that if it was an actual perm or he switched to a curling shampoo
If u were around back then, for some reason perming became really HOT and everyone was getting a perm. Seems funny now!
i remember this when it aired.. RINGO the tv special.. i was 10.... oh well.. I guess it has better production values than the Magical Mystery Tour!
saw this in canada
Thanks for posting this.
Have not seen it in 34 years.
Oh my god. This is priceless. LMAO
Seeing this helps me understand the Star Wars Holiday Special a bit more.
Ringo's a hit with the ladies
I'm loving this!
I wonder if lennon watches this in his Dakota apartment
ringo is so cute
Ringo should have been playing/touring around that time, with that band.
saw this when it first aired (big ringo fan) it 's worse now
The production values aren't good, but it's pretty funny.
Yeah, funny as a wet fart.
The late 70s weren’t kind to the Beatles
Very enjoyable.
never thought i'd see this again :)
I remember watching this many years ago. I think it would of been great if Paul and John could of had short interview clip’s like George did at the beginning of this show.
this is wonderful tysoo much
Carrie Fisher 😍
