    WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly cable access television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

Where are the tools? In the last few years the ancient plans for a water powered device that precisely cut large stone slabs was discovered. When reconstructed it worked flawlessly. We have been gradually finding plans for various mechanical devices from all over the ancient world which did some pretty amazing things. Just because they didn't have electricity doesn't mean they couldn't make truly amazing machines for the manufacture of their great monoliths.
You want to know why it is so rare we find these plans and why human invention seemed to be so stagnant for so long; look at the story of the Library of Alexandria and the similar historical event in Persia. Then after you have done that take a look at the attack on science in the modern age by religious fundamentalists. We are in the middle of reburning the Library. If we are not careful then 2000 years from now we will have some other ignorant asshat on future-tube saying "where are the machines they used to make the statue of liberty?"

It's honestly interesting to me that there's this constant struggle between the ignorant and the intellectual. Throughout history there's been this cycle of enlightenment then self-destruction. It seems we might be on the downturn of enlightenment at the moment. I hope we can pull back up into enlightenment before the metaphorical Library is burned.

I second this recommendation. There is just no easy cure all answer. The short version would be if you think you might be disowned/ punished severely/ get potential college support cut, then it is probably better to wait until you can properly support yourself. These things have happened. Don't feel forced to come out because of us other atheists is really the only thing I will add. Good luck either way.

Yes Eratosthenes was a brilliant scholar, he made some amazing discoveries. But at least we know how he did it how he calculated the distance from the earth to the sun. However some of ancient civs. Knew much more, even how the whole solar system, planets work. They could predict solar eclipses they knew about all the planets in our solar system without a single telescope. The only explonation we have atm is in their history "when sky people came down and taught them " that's it.

    1. I hypothesize that the desert people of Israel were not used to eating shellfish, which can cause severe allergic reactions in infants, (more often than adults), killing them without medical attention.
    2. Back in the Renaissance, they thought tomatoes were poisonous and called them 'love apples'. I hypothesize that people noticed the connection between tomatoes and heartburn and thought it was toxins. My mother-in-law is allergic to tomatoes, too, so that also kind of ties in to #1. Probable?

Astronomy like technology is a vast field. You can't cover it all and you will pick the themes and observe the things easier for you to observe as in the Mayan example. The same Mayans believed the Earth was flat and didn't even know the wheel. We admire Mayans for their calendar but the Greeks figured out the 26,000 year cycle of Earth's precession and they measured the year down to a precision of a few seconds.
I'd like to know which civilization knew about how planets work by the way.

Correction for what Joe said, autism is a spectrum both in severity and there being a spectrum of many different aspects on which a person can have a sliding severity scale.
It is not a single thing, autism is a combination of an entire spectrum of possible problems on which a person can have problems or not, the combination of the problems puts the person on the spectrum.
People with autism are extremely varied in the problems each and every one of them has.

It depends on how strong your parents beliefs are. I stuck out over 12 years in a born-again church, then simply stopped attending when I was about 20. I only recently started calling myself atheist, but I dont think that is REALLY important. We arent defined by what we dont believe, so the term holds no real weight. I am now in my 40s and comfortable with the word. Or you could do what I did and keep disbelief to yourself ( like many religious folks ) until you are more comfortable.
    cheers!

After all, he hasn't kept them up to date on his progress. So, he could start expressing doubts. Show how nothing "helps". Slowly grow away from the church and let people see he just can't help it. And then come out and let the chips fall where they may. He needs us as friends, not those people. Good luck Jim!

This part ... 55:08 till 55:30 ... That's where the Ancient Greek had gotten to as well when the Romans came along and messed everything up. They had these stories of monsters, gods and miracles but when they looked at the world around them they saw, no monsters, no gods and no miracles. How to reconcile the two? At first they separates history into a time of legends and a regular time and then they (some of em anyway) ditched their stories entirely. Good to see Bob using the same reasoning.

That's not an explanation, it just replaces godunnit with the skypeople done it. I think you're exaggerating the depth of their knowledge, they knew that there were planets because those were the only stars that moved differently through the sky then the rest of the stars. Their location allowed them to see the night sky with more detail, and it only takes time and observation to realize that it moved through cycles, however they did not know how it worked.

They were not acting out of hate, or with any intent to antagonize. It is often difficult to tell someone they are ignorant or not very smart on any particular topic, but doing so is not a bad thing and should not be looked upon as being so. There is an emotional response from people when their ignorance is revealed to them. This is happening because of poor education and understanding of what it means to be ignorant, and what one should do when they find themselves to be ignorant.

If you really want to look at it without speculating, you'll notice that ancient civilizations like the Mayas (whose golden age isn't that ancient at all by the way) the knew basically the same things Europeans knew. They had some measurements that were more accurate but that's explained by the fact they observed things from below the Tropic of Cancer which made it possible for them to have the sun passing exactly overhead.
