Leadville's Boom Days Burro Races

Since 1949 burro racing has been a draw for the high country of Colorado. How did this start? Celebrating the prospector days where they would come out with a burro and pan for gold and if someone found the gold they'd have to race to town often outpacing other prospectors to stake their claim.
