Thanks for such a ‘to the point’ review and for showing the results on so many materials. I’ve got the M1 on order with the same laser so this is helpful!
I'm laughing, he is so pleasant and to the point. I was watching a video review of a product and the guy starts with a cup of coffee taking about random things. Films meeting the delivery truck and fifteen minutes later he gets to the point and does a terrible job. Anyone can post a video but many should reconsider.
Thank you for this!! I've been wanting these since I saw it and it's so nice to see a full review!!
I just purchased this machine from another person's recomendation, and your video helped me know that I made the right decision. Thank you.
FINALLY! Thank you very much for such a thorough review! I watched dozens of videos and no one seemed to fully test all claimed capabilities, particularly for box making. Thanks again!
Glad you appreciated that I run a business that depends largely on laser cutting and engraving and was excited to show real world things people can produce and sell aswell. This package really is perfect for someone who doesn't want the price or maintenance of a larger co2 laser.
Agreed. I'm not ready to spend $4k+ for quality CO2 before fully understanding all dynamics. Subscribed & using your Affiliate Link. Thanks and looking forward to more great info! Andrea
@A thank you for following and using that link. Please reach out if you come across anything that you're not sure of I am here for the community.
I knocked back a shot every time you said, “The machine”. I don’t even remember the end of the video, but you did a great job on what I do recall!
Hahaha based on that voice over this would have been a dangerous game 🍻
Run and owned Co2 lasers for over 20 years. These diode lasers have really come a long way. Nice to see. Aso I've heard that it's only the clear acrylic. Try black or another opaque material
I am super impressed, and you gotta love how portable and low maintenance they are. I will find some other acrylic and give it a go thanks for that tip.
No, it has a hard time with MANY colors of Acrylic (White and Clears are worst but not the only ones. Anything with Blues in the 400-450nm range or so), Glass, thicker woods. CO2 can cut 3/4” or more and Diode’s can’t (cleanly).
I have both and even a K40 can Engrave and Cut MANY things even the new 20 Watters still can”t.
That’s why it’s in quotes. To try fool those that don’t do their homework and/or don’t know any better.
In the 90's I worked on and built the first co2 prototype laser sys. With acoustic oscillators and some code, we would scribe the mona lisa on denim jackets as a demo. I was 23 when I built my first 25w liquid cooled co2 laser @10.6um. Its amazing 3d prototyping and laser cutting/etching in the home only took 25 years.
That is incredible! I cannot believe how accessible mini manufacturing is for the individuals now. It is quite a time to be alive and I am hoping to take full advantage of it.
Thank you for the review. Pretty impressive for a diode laser.
Yeah its really cool to see them advancing the diode technology like this and at this price I am quite impressed considering their quality. Great name by the way good to meet another fellow Custom Creations.
Subscribed- excited to see the air assist- really thinking of adding this to my shop!
Thanks for following along I am eager to add that also as it me a huge difference on my co2 lasers.
Hi Chad, air-assist, while very important for keeping the beam from diffusing, won't help with cutting acrylic. 405nm diode lasers use visible light that passes almost unimpeded through clear acrylic - since nothing is absorbed, no heat is generated and acrylic is largely unaffected. CO2 lasers use long wavelength IR to which Acrylic is totally opaque. If you ever get the chance to play with a thermal imaging camera, try looking through glass or Plexiglass -both appear jet black. You can surface engrave clear acrylic if you paint it black or stick on some builder's tape - the coating burns, transferring some of the heat to the acrylic and melting it. I've read that more powerful diode lasers can cut through darkly coloured acrylic, though I've never tried that - the CO2 laser is the correct tool for cutting acrylic and does it well. Btw, nice relaxing & informative video, thanks for that :-)
I have a neje module, it cuts 4mm black acrylic successfully although not as cleanly as a co2 laser leaving a slightly melted surface
As a rank amateur at anything in this space... I'd probably go to a local company that has a water jet and get acrylic cut there.
Howdy, Gordo! I’m curious about your comment about the air assist keeping the beam from diffusing…
I’ve had CO2 lasers (including two 75W Epilogs that I still use daily) for about 20 years, and this is the first I’ve heard / read about protecting beam integrity with air assist. The only time we use air assist is when we need to protect against flame-up when cutting materials like plastics, acrylics, and wood. The air is blown at (or near) where the beam contacts the material, and *almost* eliminates any flaming.
Does it serve a different purpose on short-wave lasers, such as the one in Chad’s video? Hoping to learn something new here…. :)
@@bobtnailer Hi Bob, I think the wavelength is a major factor in determining how much smoke affects the beam. My first laser cutter was a purple diode laser and smoke definitely affected the beam quality when cutting or engraving. I did a lot of tests (as one does when starting out) and blowing away the smoke gave thinner, deeper lines and less 'browning' of light materials close to the cut. I moved to a 60W CO2 laser years ago and haven't noticed the same defocusing of the spot due to smoke, though, as you say, air is essential to stop the work-piece from igniting. This makes sense - driving glasses cut through the haze by blocking blue light and a thermal-imaging camera can 'see through' mist. The wavelength of a CO2 laser (and IR cameras) is hundreds of times greater than either the wavelength of a blue diode laser or the size of smoke particles.
Great video! I was interested in a laser from Craigslist, but the deal fell through. Then I saw this model and thought it might be a better model. I’m glad waited, and this video helped me decide this is the model that I want.
Thanks for posting this, and hope to order this in the near future.
Awesome review, thank you for taking the time to show what this machine can do, I will be looking forward to seeing more because I just got the XTOOL D1 and I am just learning how to use it.
Thanks! Just order D1 Pro with extension and enclosure looking forward
Thank you so much Joe, if you have any questions reach out to me at chadscustom@gmail.com
Damn.....that's wicked!
Great video.
Thank you.
Cheers from Canada's East Coast!
Certainly really neat
Nice video. Well done!
I can’t seem to get the dark black clear cut like you did with the anchor logo. What did you have your settings on to achieve that? Also, on the coasters, was the logo light colored to engrave in the silver color or is that how it engraved even if the logo is dark? Silly questions but I’m new to this! Thank you!
Great video
I just order mine, your review helped me make that decision. So excited.
I am excited for you! Reach out to me if I can help out in anyway.
@@gingerrudin4431 it ranges depending on the options you select but if you click the link in the video description you will see all the prices.
Cant wait to see your video on the xTool D1 Pro 20w
Coming very soon, just gotta get a few more projects out to some urgent clients.
I am impressed it can do that without an air assist. Usually the carbonization of the wood makes it even harder to cut and at that thickness the focus would go off humm.
Exactly! I just got their air assist and honeycomb, can't wait to share the results those add to it aswell.
This is a fantastic video wow ty
@@ChadsCustomCreations I was on the fence about the same one but now after seeing this I’ll pick it up tomorrow thanks again
How cleanly can it cut foam like the stuff used in the packaging, specifically the sheet used for the riser legs? Low power many passes? With the air assist?
I will find out I've used my Co2 with great success but I will see how this one does and report back.
How does it do cutting aluminum or thin steel (0.090" aluminim or 0.050" steel)?
i bought it during pre-release, and my packaging was garbage. glad to see they've upped the ante.
Thank you for being an early believer in them they are definitely interested in reinvesting their profits into improving their products and staying ahead of the competition which I really appreciate about them.
That was a very informative video. Thanks for that, because I have been wondering whether I should get one. Curious of your recommendation between this and the Sculpfun S10.
Since I haven’t used the sculpfun I can’t really say but xtool is leading the pack on diode technology advancements.
How does it do on something like an anodized aluminum coffee mug?
Just randomly come across your channel and binged a bunch of these videos.
Could you make a video/tutorial for laser cutting/making the designs/importing designs?
Looks like a great little craft hobby but I wouldnt know where to start!
excelente video, es bueno saber, que el traductor, funciona bien jeje, una consulta, cuando mensionaste, que la marca tiene unas potencias y velocidades recomendadas, en que parte esta eso ?, gracias de antemano y saludos desde Venezuela
"You're a youtuber!"
Kid had me crackin up.
Hahaha I told him that comment right there set off my channel all thanks to him.
So exciting love this. Thank you! sub'd
Thank you for the sub I hope I am able to bring value to you in the future.
Good Morning, Does anyone know if the D1 will work on copper? I'm looking for a machine that make PCBs as well as other things. Thanks
Hi! I just bought my first xTool D1 and I'm so excited! I'm a newbie to laser cutting, so if I am cutting thicker wood, is there settings for how thick the material is so it knows how many passes it needs to do to cut all the way through? Sorry, I don't know a lot about it yet and I just want to get an idea before I get it!
Welcome to the laser world. No feature quite like that yet though that would be awesome. I would say it will really come down to practice testing and learning your materials as all the materials you use will be a little bit different. I use a sharp pointy tool to see if the object is moving freely without moving the main material at all because if it needs more passes you can always send the job again as long as you don't move the material.
Stuff looks amazing. Just curious what settings your running on those anchors? I just can’t seem to get my engravings on wood that dark and detailed!
I think he said in the video that their website has recommended power and speed settings for different materials, so try looking there.
Excellent tutorial and thanks for the shoutout 😎
Noticed that most people use the single quoted 'strings',
but seems like Python is fully compatible with the "C-style double quotes".
It's probably just a preference thing (or is it?) plus one doesn't need "\" in a double-quoted string to use an apostrophe.
Anyways, cheers and may your channel see an exponential growth💹
Also thank you so much for this review and I look forward to watching more content .you earned a sub with this
Thank you Hunter glad you liked it. And glad you're following along.
Fantastic video! Thank You! Since this is a CNC based system, this question is of interest. Is it possible to replace the laser head with a 3D printer head and a milling head? As far as I understand, the head of this machine only moves along the X and Y axes. For 3D printing and milling, you also need the head to move along the Z axis as well. Thank you!
I wouldn't recommend changing out the head for CNC router or 3D printing I have found those all in one machine though can do multiple things cannot do anyone of them well. This machine like you said does not have an powered Z height control so this would not be possible anyways. I am a advocate for dedicated machines. I have a review on the longer LK5 which has proven to be a great 3D printer and though I do not have one the onefininity has got my vote as far as router CNC goes at this point.
Hi @chads custom creations great vids what about fumes with this one ? Is it not bad for you without extraction
While customer support is not real-time, their email response is fast, helpful and they follow up to see if you have any additional problems.
Hi, thank you for this video. I have been wanting a laser forever but am not a fan of the glowforge and have been actively studying this brand. I want to engrave metal jewelry, cut genuine leather and laser engrave into cowhides. Have you tried hide before? If I sent you hide and thicker leather would you do a test run for me before I make the purchase?
I am considering the M1 10w deluxe or should I consider this one? Any suggestions or tips?
I have a question. I need to engrave a bar top that has parkay wooden flooring tile that cant be removed will this laser engrave the surface that it is sitting on or does the item you are engraving have to be elevated to engrave? I really want to purchase this but this would be the reason I don't if I cant engrave the bar top that the laser is sitting on.
You can definitely do that with this laser it is actually perfect for this exact application.
Very thorough review, I’ve been researching lasers and this may be the one to start with till I know how to use the bigger lasers. I’m new to the laser community and really want to open a business creating.
Thank you, I’ll use your affiliate link if I decide to go with this one. I was looking at the smaller omtech one but this looks easier to manage and easier to learn
Thank you for your kinds words. I think this is perfect for someone wanting to get into lasering but doesn't want all the Hassel that comes along with the co2 lasers.
Great video, thank you! A quick question ; have you ever tried to cut aluminum or steel? How does it work? Thanks!
Yes I have tried I actually have been successful with steel but not aluminum. If you look through my videos you will see one called cutting metal with diode lasers.
I have been looking into getting one of these but I can't seem to find an answer on it's ability to do what I am envisioning.
I want to powder coat a panel white, then powder coat it red, and then etch away the red layer with my design but not the white layer.
Do you know if this can be done?
I believe if you can get very consistent thicknesses this should be possible depending on your speed and power. I have seen people do this on tiles with spray paints its pretty cool. If you want to send me a sample, I would test it for you.
Thank you for the video...great review. Do they make a laser that will engrave stainless steel or other metals?
Thabj you for your kind words. To truly etch into metals you will need what's a called a fiber laser. $$$ 🥲
Awesome video. I have been looking to get a laser engraver and this looks like the one! Is the one you use here the 5 watt or 10 watt?
I am using the 10w here they are also taking orders for 20w upgrade now also I can't wait to try that one out.
Great video, thinking about getting something like this. I do a lot of hand carving with a router. It takes me forever to trace the pattern. Could I use this to burn the image into a piece of wood and then carve it out further with my router? It seems like that would be quicker and more precise than me doing it with carbon paper.
It would be perfect for that you can even set it to just do the outline which is even faster then a full fill engraving.
Yep, thats exactly what I want it for. Just to outline and I’ll do the carving. Thanks!
I have not seen all of your content but I am wondering if you have or have used the RA2 rotary tool attachment? I wonder if a walking cane could be etched on using the RA2 rotary attachment?
Yes I definitely think it would would the RA2 pro you can really grab that cane foot and get it high enough that the handle would hit the table top.
Do you recommend a honeycomb surface for the Xtool D1 if using for hobby and some small jobs or is there another surface that could work okay?
If you want a ready to go option for cutting yes I would recommend it.
for some reason my XD1 Pro is not connecting to my computer and I missing something? Also there is a 3 in little wire that came with it but I don't know were it goes?
Hi chad I just got my d1 pro 5w I wonder why it's not engraving on metal like you used on this video for dog. It's working well on the woods tho. Am I doing wrong or I should've bought 20w
In this video I was using the 10w. Though try slowing it way down 100% power and you can even do a thin layer of mustard and see if you have any luck with that.
Would you recommend trying to cut something in one pass? I always try to cut in several passes to minimise burning the hardwood but I’m open to suggestions.
I think every situation may call for a different techniques but I saw or heard somewhere if you get it down to one pass it allows for the smoke to be pushed out the bottom and you can end up with cleaner faces and better cuts but that may not always be the case.
Question: on the minute 10:12 the cutting test was done from 1 m/s up to 10 m/s or 1 mm/s up to 10 mm/s ?
1/mms to 10/mms go check out my review of the Xtool pro adding the 20w and high psi makes this thing a cutting machine.
Bought the same machine a few ago and still haven't figured it out yet. Is there a certain program you use to cut out the wood? Using very think balsam and so far haven't been able to figure out how to cut through it. thanks
Yes lightburn software is what everyone is using me included, lots of tutorials to get you up and running.
Hi. What setting did you use on the slate coaster? I’m using laser box basic and took me around 60 minutes for the same one you did with 4 minutes only !!!!!
Slate doesn't take much power so I ran it at full speed I believe that is about 180/mms and I probably had it at full power. Not sure about laser box basic but with lightburn you can do what's called a flood fill which eliminates a lot of the traveling over blank spaces and basically keeps the laser on the parts that need to be engraved cutting down tike substantially.
Hey thanks for the great video! Perfect amount of detail. I hear people talking about how deep a laser can cut wood in a single pass, and I saw it in your video, too. So, can you make multiple passes and cut 5/8" or 3/4" solid wood or plywood with a laser such as this? If you can, what's the drawback? Time? Quality? Both?
With the 20w and 40w the cutting ability is incredible if paired with a high PSI air assist. Cutting 3/4” plywood comes out clean and cuts better than what I can do on my 90w Co2 laser.
I want to make custom name plate jewelry. Would this be a great machine for that ? What materials would I need?
Im looking at this now on Amazon thinkng of getting it
Wana know how good it cuts wood and acrylic
Be sure to check their website linked in the video description sometimes they actually have better deals and faster shipping when ordered directly.
Wood it cuts great acrylic it can only cut certain colors, no clear and a few others that it can’t do but does great with black acrylic.
Also I believe the promo code Chad10 will get you $80 off
Hi - thank you for sharing this video. I’m looking to get something like this to engrave race medals, can this work for that purpose? Can you do a sample if possible?
Do you need anything besides the software for laserbox? do you need an attachment
To use laserbox you don't need anything else you can even run it without any cables.
Its compatibile with other rotary brands or only with xtool rotary
It should be compatible with any 12v rotary just may require wiring in a new plug for it.
How do you make sure everything is lined up and in focus? Like the slate coaster, how did you know it was centered?
I placed a piece of scrap wood underneath the laser and lasered a 4x4" square. After that was lasered I can place the coaster right in the middle of that squares and send the new design from the computer used the absolute coordinates options on lightburn. You can do that or use the framing option aswell and line it up visually with the red laser pointers aswell.
Great video!
Two questions for you….
1. What material do you place under the wood when cutting all the way through?
2. What material did you use for the cut out on the MSGT plaque?
Thank you!
1.So you can put any kind of metal under it or what's best is what they call a honeycomb bed which they actually sell as an ad on as well on their site.
2.That Phoenix was 1/4" MDF painted black. Though I didn't test the mdf on the xtool that was cut on my 90w co2 laser before I started testing out the xtool.
@@ChadsCustomCreations will the xtool d1 cut through 1/4 MDF? Looking to upgrade my small business from cricut to making more :d signs like the phoenix here.
@@Dynaamiic_ MDF can be quite tough let me add this to my list of things to test.
Completely new to laser cutting!! Is the 5w ok to start with for a newbie or is the 10 recommended? Is the honeycomb sheet necessary or definitely needed? Thanks for your help!
5w would be perfectly fine for any engravings. 10w would be faster and also give you the ability to cut like you are seeing me but if money is tight you could always save up for the 20w module and replace your 5w eventually. Honeycomb is really only needed if you plan on cutting.
@@ChadsCustomCreations thanks so much! Definitely appreciate your thorough review!!
Very impressive - I have a Macsa laser already - what it the lacquer you used on the slate coaster?
I like the quality of minwax satin lacquer but the cans get expensive now that I have started huge productions I now buy Mohawk lacquer by the gallon and spray it out of a homeright, I leave it in the gun and never clean it out.
What would be a laser cutter you’d recommend to cut acrylic for a beginner? This laser it seams that acrylic was it’s “weak spot” if you will.

Where can a find a calibration and grid file? I have Lightburn and don't see any test files
If you have the updated lightburn they just added an amazing function up at the top under laser tools they have a grid generator and other great tools.
@@ChadsCustomCreations Thanks, I just downloaded it last week. I'll have to take a look for it
Great video! Good review and very well explained. I purchased a K40 over a year ago and I have never used it because I feel insecure using it on my own with no one with prior experience near me. This one looks more friendly. What is your opinion between K40 and this one? The K40 uses a bucket of water, does this one too? Thank you!
Yeah the k40 or co2 lasers do require much more user adjustment and maintenance.
This is what's considered a diode laser and these don't have any water, no mirrors, the only maintenance is keeping the lens clean with a cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol.
Diode are perfect for people getting started. Co2 lasers or more for people getting into serious production and require speed and cutting power.
Hi. You doing absolute right! The K40 is out of the Package absolute unsafe and requires a bunch of security improvments. No one say´s you must use a Bucket of Water =) i have a Tank with arround 10 Liters of Water / Glycol (the stuff used for antifreeze in a car cooler in winter) and a Radiator, from PC Watercoolings or from a old Car. Maybe some Computer Cooling Kits include a complete Cooling solution. I think you can safe some Money by buying a cheap K40 but the saved you must invest in a Propper certified Lasergoolgle what is explicit made for the Wavelenghth a CO2Laser emited.
@@mupfelmax530 rubbish, perhaps you should try K40's properly before generalising, they are not unsafe, its the people who use them and the people who sell them. They are far from perfect but they work very well normally unless you get a dodgy seller. I have 5 of these all running very well without any problems at all. The diodes are more convenient than CO" lasers but no where near as powerful once you get to 80 watt and above machines.
Can this cleanly cut and engrave brushed aluminum plastic labels for electronic panel labeling?
Hmm I am not sure you might need to do a Co2 laser to get clean cuts on the plastic but it’s possible it might work.
Does this work on acrylic at all? Looking for a cutter for cake toppers, drink stirrers etc all acrylic items.
The acrylics they have listed on their site all work but I believe clear, white, and blue will not work on any diode laser.
Great video! Will this engrave on regular rocks? Like garden stones?
It works great on slate and tile, I imagine it would work and if not you could also use a marking spray or create masking and spray paint them.
Would love one of them but need food on the table :) will just have to add it to my growing list.
Sorry for the late reply, I am doing a laser giveaway on my latest video of you would like to join in for a chance to win.
I'm interested in owning an Xtool D1. It would be my first time engraving or cutting wood, so still all very new to me. Does the tumbler engraver accessory come with the Xtool? Or is it purchased separately?
If you check the links in the description you’ll see different packages at prices.
Any idea how this will work for engraving on something that has been Cerakoted?
I don't have any particular experience with it but I am about to run a bunch of test on my next video for this so if you know where I can find some ill test it out for you.
Just a safety note, use email address on key tag instead of phone number. Especially, if a house key is on the key ring. . Great video, really answers a lot of questions I had before I take the leap and purchase a LASER sys. Thanks!!
Great point! Reach out if you have any other questions I am happy to help.
I would like to add the home solid state laser sys., are slow af but still vary useful.
Absolutely this one is a joy to use even with my other 2 big Co2 lasers I still find myself using this one.
Have you run into the situation where the Laser will try to go outside of its bounds and it grinds because it can’t go any farther, so you have to power down or quickly press stop? I haven’t been able to figure out how to prevent it, and I’m sure that’s not good for the motors or the belts. Is there a way to prevent that?
If using lightburn you can set the start from position to use absolute coordinates and in there you can also have the machine home itself to the top left corner. I was able to change something in the setting on lightburn that also makes the machine home itself at every start up so crashing into the sides is no longer an issue.
What power is this model shown? The link takes you to the product page with various output models. Thanks!
This was the xtool D1 10w model. They have updated a few features and now they would call this the xtool D1 Pro 10w
Really cool device! Really important on the extracting smoke/fume/particles. The company I work for makes those extraction units for lasers. That would be cool to do a demo together.
Is it posible to engrave glass? If so can it be something like a glass cup you use at home?
Yes absolutely if you watch my overview of the RA2 pro rotary you will see some glasses that I engraved.
nice
This is awesome how much does one of these run?
At the time of this comment this full set up is $793 but they have different options that goes as low as $469
