Sean Strickland and his team were counting on DDP to gas out and panicked when he didn't gas.
All respect Pennington for coming back from all the injuries but Silva was not moving her head at all and even then she could not get a finish. Ladies where gased in a second round in 5 round fight. Prelims level fight that was for UFC gold.
That was a low IQ fight. Silva stopped calf-kicking, then Pennington was getting out-grappled for no reason.

Takedowns are always hard for me. Should they matter when they don’t result in meaningful change for the fight? Idk it seems to me Sean edged it out but that depends on how much a takedown counts for you.

Dominic Cruz is CLUELESS, I could not believe what I was hearing that he thought getting a cut or a swollen eye from a round would mean the fight is based on damage and how the fighters look at the end of the fight and thats how the judges would score it? Wtf!! Considering rounds are scored separately and based on many factors including take downs, effective striking/grappling, octagon control etc, I just thought he is talking BS (as always) and Jon Anik has to correct him. Its not the first time ive heard him misread whats happening in fights. Cant stand his commentary

Could someone clarify this, as I am unsure if I understand Luke:
On the Evloev v Allen bout; did Goddard make a mistake or not? Luke says that Goddard did not make the " correct call" by deeming the knees as fouling, even though Movsar's fingertips were on the ground when the knees landed. If, as Luke states, Ontario use a ruleset where any contact between hand and ground makes a fighter grounded, then where did Goddard make a mistake exactly?

I watched the weasle explain it and I think u need your palm and hand on the floor not just your finger tips, which makes sense coz then u could just reach down and have one finger tip on the ground and be grounded lol because his hand wasn’t actually grounded they should hav been legal, but in Goddard defence that would be near impossible to catch in the moment

Strickland just didn’t do enough. His big problem is he has a limited tool set. He has a great jab and straight but that’s pretty much all you get. Rarely kicks, no takedowns, no submissions, no grappling. That’s just not going to fly very long as champion.

It presents very poorly visually when his opponents doing lots of stance switching & targeting punches from midsection to head, all kinds of leg kicks from low to high & mixing in takedowns. Sean's without question got the best jab in the UFC, but that jab & then straight punches behind it with no KO power doesn't feel like enough
Dominick Cruz was trying to say that in close rounds, clear cuts and blood will skew the judges to pick one way. Its the easiest way to gauge damage.

Thats not how it works. They put their score cards after each round. They dont choose who wins at the end.

I felt the same way! I knew DDP was an awkward fighter but I thought he made a jump when he beat Whitaker. But he just looked like he knew 2 punches, overhand right, overhand left. And Sean, to me, fights scared even if he is a counter striker. Then he turns it up at the very end of fights. Even then, he head hunts and doesn’t do takedowns nor leg kicks.
Styles make fights. DDP has been finishing dudes. Sean is a great defensive fighter, even Izzy couldn’t touch him, yet DDP did sone damage.
I'm not sure how little or big this might mean to you but Joe Rogan mentioned you by name during his fight companion. He was curious about what people online were saying about the decision because he was kind of surprised by it (although he admits he wasnt watching it closely enough to ve confident about the scoring).
They were scrolling through some random names on the # and then Joe asked "what about Luke Thomas?" It definitely came off like he respects you opinion on the matter.
I think that's pretty cool that you stood out to him as a source worth checking in on.

really close fight. I had strickland winning 1,2, Dricus winning 3,4 and round 5 I have no idea but if i had to pick, I would say Dricus.
Same dude. I mostly watched with no sound and DDP just did more. Leg kicks, takedowns, aggression with spamming those overhand rights. They started landing in the 4th and 5th. And the body shots too. I thought it was close but clear
I feel vindicated hearing luke give strickland his flowers. I had it 3-2 strickland. I think he fell victim to the classic judges see big whooping punches and thinking they are impressive. Aside from the 2 cuts strickland was hardly damaged. I also saw headlines of a headbutt, but neither here nor there. 😂
What was shocking to me is I thought round 2 was the closest round and no judge gave it to strickland. I had 3-2 Sean. Seemed kinda obvious.

Why do people keep saying Izzy should be next? He got KO'd by Alex, won the belt back, then got schooled by Sean and lost the belt again, and now he should get another title fight? I get he was dominate, but he's 1-2 in his last 3, and lost like his last 3-5. If anything it should be a rematch against Sean and Izzy, or a rematch between Sean and DDP because the fight was so close. It should've been a draw at worse

4:55 Does Luke usually watch UFC events with the volume off? Dom has been conflating the "damage" criterion of MMA scoring to just visible/superficial/cosmetic damage (i.e., cuts, blood, bruises, swelling, etc.) since at least UFC Vegas 66 Cannonier v. Strickland which took place in December 2022. He did so again at UFC Vegas 70 (in case anyone's interested) and at many other events. And his fellow commentators would let him go on and on with that thinking. What was different this time was that Anik finally pushed back and addressed it to try to disabuse him of that notion. But he did it in a nice way w/o calling him out for misunderstanding what the term "damage" meant.

If they’re going by the old grounded fighter rules as minimum 2/3 knees were illegal. One of them the force of the knee lifts the hand not Allen pulling up; the last one was objectively illegal by all the rules the UFC uses and that’s when Goddard stopped the fight. If anything Allen should’ve been docked a point for 2 fouls

6 empty takedowns no damage, Strickland was able to get back up quickly. They were basically just a change of position. If any of the judges counted those useless takedowns as the deciding factor in any round then they should be fired.

I really didnt find the Rocky-Silva fight particularly bad. Not the greatest fight, obviously. But Rocky didn't really have a dance partner. Silva was durable enough to not get put away, but she wasmt really putting herself at risk either.

I thought Dricus won 2, 3 & 4 so I had DDP winning but it was close. I totally agree with Luke bcuz what you said is what I told my friend while we watched the fight, Sean feels like a one-trick pony. Sean's a jabbing head hunter without the power to knock guys out. He needs to learn to mix up his targets & techniques, using his leg kicks would really help the visual, bcuz it makes him seem like a one-trick pony with no second gear or alternative style of attack
