Chasing the "Garcia Tone" | Developing the Private Stock Super Eagle II

  • It’s no secret that John Mayer’s main guitar on tour with Dead & Company has been the PRS Super Eagle, launched last spring. During the 2016 tour, PRS made Mayer a second version of that instrument with some updated woods and aesthetic appointments. Mayer played the Super Eagle II on the very last show of the 2016 tour and is continuing to play it for Dead & Company’s 2017 summer tour. PRS and Mayer are excited to offer this new version, the Super Eagle II, to fans and collectors.
    “Just like with the first edition Super Eagle, you’re literally getting the same guitar that is in John’s rig. It’s been an honor to help create a tool that John can use to work with Dead & Company and beyond,” said Paul Reed Smith.

PRS continues to innovate bring these beautiful tools of artistic expression that bring out the best in you as a player whilst doubling as an art piece on its own and they are always out of reach. Odd that it's a semi hollow considering Jerry didn't play semi hollow except the Guild in the very early days. It certainly wasn't a part of the tone he was chasing. That ended with a bunch of heavy solid body guitars for him. And he loved them even though they killed his back during those longass shows.

    Jerry was great at taking us on the journey with him while he mixed chord tones and scale tones in search of what he found pleasing to his own ear. Just watched this video and decided to go find one of these just to see what the price was. Finally found one that had already sold on Reverb LP, with a listed price of $16,754.07, and I can't find any evidence that any of them are for sale. They should have called it the Beanie Baby model, or perhaps the P.T. Barnum Special. What a crock. Look for the video of Garcia and Elvis Costello playing "You Win Again." Jerry is playing Costello's vintage Jazzmaster, and guess what? It sounds like Garcia. The production is a bit crude, but it's unmistakably Jerry. The magic was in his fingers and in his ears, not the wood or the metal.

  • @JamTrax
    @JamTrax Před 7 lety +45

    FYI... For anyone wanting the Garcia tone, you can't get it with this guitar. Period. This is indeed a fine guitar & is for getting the "Mayer with Dead & Co tone", but there's a well known formula & specific gear needed for the Garcia tone, which Mayer simply doesn't have or use. It's just a simple fact.
    It also takes much more than just the right guitar specs like DiMarzio SD II's, Onboard effects loop that Jerry used but are missing from this guitar, but the other half is very important too... Garcia also used a heavily modded Twin pre into a solid state McIntosh 2300 into JBL E-120's. A combo of all these things + right guitar specs is required for the "real" Jerry thing.
    But John can rock for sure, & has a great tone going on. It's just a stretch for PRS to invoke the name "Garcia" in an effort to make money, while not delivering at all on that tone.

      Travis Elswick well that was only part of 69 and May of 70, hardly a signature tone or hard to get like later on, even though the playing itself was killer... its easy to get that tone so no "chasing Garcia tone" needed... it's the unique tone with wolf and tiger that are more desired by far for those after signature Garcia tone. The SG was a small phase but still great music. I prefer Wolf, Tiger and the Travis Bean with JGB myself.

    PRS guitars are the electric equivalent to a fine Martin acoustic. I've owned both, along with Gibsons, Fenders, etc...
    When you strum an E7 and listen to most top end guitars, you hear the E7 chord. When you strum a D-42 or one of these Eagles, you hear each string's note stacking up to make the chord...
    If I were currently playing full time, I'd have a couple of PRS beauties. Their tone and playability are as great as their fit and finish, classic American craftsmanship, period!

All those little nuggets of info are fun to know... as I didn't know this. Anyway, I've seen Dead & Company and the tones John achieves with this particular "tool" are just amazing. Very sweet, smooth, creamy... and I'll say quite different than John Mayer w/ his Fender. I've seen John live several times... in the early distortion days, I was VERY lucky to catch an all acoustic show (one of the best concerts I've been to). • @STSGuitar16
      @STSGuitar16 Před 5 lety +4

      I understand that some people don't like the relics, but for the vast majority of people, a relic gibson custom shop copy of a '59 Les Paul is the closest we will _ever_ get to playing a real '59. When I think about it that way, I don't hate the relics so much. I can't shell out six figures for a guitar, but if a four figure price tag gets me even a fraction of the magic, dings, scratches and all, of a real legendary vintage instrument, I'm all for it. I've also seen interviews where Gary Rossington, for instance, talked about how he had his original '59 recreated by gibson (so that he doesn't have to bring his real '59 on the road with him) down to the scratches and real wear patterns on his original guitar, and he said he can't even tell the difference between the real '59 and the recreated '59. I think that speaks volume for guys like me who would love nothing more than being able to afford a real '59 but can't. Is relicing a guitar in that context ok with you?

    • @STSGuitar16
      @STSGuitar16 Před 5 lety +2

      @Southeastern777 Not an accurate comparison at all. Of course you wouldn't buy a car like that, there's no market for it whatsoever and the only ones people will buy are the clean ones in good shape. The same is not true in the guitar market. Also to counter your engine point, Gibson or Fender aren't selling malfunctioning guitars at all to begin with; everything works perfectly. Clean vintage guitars are worth more, but even the most beat up 59 Les Pauls go for six figures.

    • @wiseguy9202

      @Southeastern777 lol ok bud, sounds a bit like your projecting yourself onto me, but whatever man. I wouldn't buy a relic guitar with any intention of trying to impress anyone or make anyone think I'm playing a vintage guitar or anything at all like that. I buy a guitar because _I_ enjoy the guitar's sound, feel, appearance, and the vibe that it has, not because I am trying to make an audience think a certain thing about me because of what guitar I'm playing. About the last thing that comes into my head when getting a guitar is "will this guitar really impress the crowd?" It's all about the _musician's_ connection to the instrument and the vibe that it has. I don't own any relic guitars personally, but I do understand why they're popular.

    Don't get me wrong. I'd love to own a super eagle. But 15k? Am I crazy to say that's egregious? I get it has the built in pre amp and effects loop but so does the Phred Instruments Tiger copy I bought. That was less that 2k. A PRS shouldn't cost as much as a reliable car.

Get a set of collar-stays.

    I felt it was kind of a shame and hope it’s not a show of true color that John went to prs instead of keeping it in the dead family and promoting alembic a company that could use the help ... i really never understood. I would like to think it wasn’t just about who offered a better endorsement but you’ll never get that info in an interview. Well at least prs is still ran mostly by Paul even if it is big corporate... it relieving he didn’t go to fender or Gibson corporate for a deal..
