HYALURONIC ACID FOR HAIR - the do's and don'ts

  • Let’s talk about Hyaluronic Acid not for your skin but your hair. It’s the hottest ingredient in new hair care and the high street has you covered brilliantly. But what does it do because it works fundamentally differently to HA on your skin? Recently I did a live with Inkey List founder Mark Curry who brought me up to speed on its ability to wrap itself around the hair, smoothing the cuticle to add shine. But it must be cleverly formulated with other humectants like glycerine and emollients and occlusive like coconut oil, ultra fine waxes and plant oils to seal it to the hair. In other words your facial HA won’t cut it. I’ve tried the entire @lorealparis Elvive Hydra Hyaluronic Acid range (all four products, and it’s my new favourite Elvive range), and @theinkeylist Hyaluronic Hydrating Hair Treatment. They add shine without weighing my fine, damaged hair down. I’ve yet to try the @deciem The Ordinary NMF and Hyaluronic but as I love their facial NMF I am sure it will work well on dry and sensitive scalps. BTW HA works on your scalp just as it does in your face so is a great option to try if you suffer from a dry, tight, flaky scalp.

Hi Nadine. I don't know about that one it just seems to me that skincare brands keep adding products we never needed. Neck creams, hand creams, eye creams, scalp scrubs, collagen pills, body serum, scalp brush, detox shampoo. From what I have learned from the chemist experts who have been created hair products for more than 30 years "thebeautybrans" no ingredients can trap water in the hair like it can be done on the skin and it's not even a good thing for hair it's more marketing language than anything else. The structure of hair and skin is absolutely not the same and the same ingredients do not necessarily work the same on both. The level of water in hair is limited and mainly dependant on the weather anyway. Is it humid or not. And those brands saying hyaluronic acids act as cuticles smoother still use regular conditioners as main ingredients so does not seem that effective...

Hi Nadine, I just watched you and Jo Good go to Harrods for a hair treatment on Middle Aged Minx channel and it was hilarious! Your viewers should check it out and support Jo as well. You will not be disappointed!

So glad I saw this, looking to hydrate my very fine, post menopausal hair & was toying with the idea of putting hyaluronic serum on my hair. I understand you need humectants and emollients but hair moisturising products seem to be emollient-heavy generally. These products theoretically seem ideal for what I’m after, thank you!

can i not use my the ordinary HYALURONIC acid serum on my hair if I mix it with agaran oil? i apply the HYALURONIC acid on damp hair and then put the oil on after. will this not work?

I’m so over HA! Never found one that didn’t dry my skin out, and that’s sandwiching it etc

You have to apply on damp skin, preferably after a shower while its still wet so it takes the water from the environment and not the moisture from your skin, leaving you more dry

Noughty has one now too. I don't hear a lot about this brand but I did hear an interview with the Noughty formulation chemist and she seemed to know what she was talking about. Maybe you can look into the Noughty products?

What about blending HA and an oil in a spray bottle, wouldn't that work as an easy and cheap trick?

I just put mine in with my hair shine serum and never had any problems ,I already figured you need to seal it so I have always done this but thinking that's my hairdressing side of me .

Is it better than Josh Wood color shampoo and conditioner tho? Guessing JW doesn’t contain HA, but it is very good nevertheless. Thanks N xx

    Is this more hype like
Olaplex? That cost a fortune and made my hair drier. One thing my Spanish hairdresser said- correct for your water supply. So I spray 1 part vinegar 3parts water - because my supply has tons of limescale.

I was looking at The Inkey List but I also came across abrand called Betty Rose. All made in the UK and organic and vegan and whatnot. It's also the cheapest of the bunch. Do you know if it is any good?

No! Just no. A gentle shampoo and good conditioner will do the job. Sick of these useless products. People are wiser now. Need more hydration after conditioner? then use the Moroccan oil, or a light oil
