Ethiopia and Eritrea: Rebirth at the Border - BBC World Service Documentaries

  • In September 2018, the border between Ethiopia and Eritrea was opened for the first time in 20 years, giving communities on both sides the chance to reconnect and move on with their lives.

    Travel, trade, and phone communication had been impossible, separating families and destroying businesses, but the border town of Zalambessa began to transform. Trade, construction, family lives blossomed.
    Yet, official checkpoints soon closed again for trade and vehicles due to political uncertainty. Border movement continues informally, on foot only. Hope and optimism remains, but now there is also frustration for families and despair for businesses.
    In this film we follow the lives of a young Ethiopian family with relatives living on both sides of the border. We join them to celebrate the baptism of their first born son, and learn about their work and hopes about the future.
    They are joined by a family photographer who has lived in Zalambessa all his life, and we meet an Eritrean businessman who is building a hotel in the town in hope that it remains hub for both Ethiopians and Eritreans.

    Beautiful documentary. What stroke me that there are not even slightly overweight people, men , women, young and old are all slim and healthy. I checked their diet and there might be the answer; fermented injera, many plant based foods and not plenty of meat.
    Or maybe its just genetics? But in every country you find at least the older men have bellies and ladies are thicker after babies, like Somalia or other African countries. Here none.

      You are right! It is our diet. They say we Ethiopians consume the least amount of calories. Our food is organic and not processed. And we fast for 200 days out of the year due to religious reasons at different times in the year

    • @user-po4dv9sp3n

      Small amount (due to shortage of if and luck of money to purchase it) of Healthy organic and unrefined food and fasting (no dairy or meat products for 200 days in a year). Eventually over the centuries only those who could run without much fuel survived and reproduced themselves and it became part of our DNA.
      When our diet changes and eating excessive amount of calories our children are are taller and built stronger than us. This is clearly visible in the Ethiopians and Eritreans in the diaspora especially in the west. Due to a change in our diet and sedentary jobs such as bus driving or taxi driving (for the first generation) we tend to build a pot belly even when the rest of our body is relatively slim. Genetics 🧬 is hard to beat though.

How many more poor Tigray youth have to die so the mafia family, wives and kids live a luxury life in America? Their inflated ego and empty pride is taking Tigray down with them. Journalists and reporters who work in BBC, DW, France 24, VOA, and others are former employees of government broadcast that was run by TPLF, Most of these journalists are TPLF sympathizers, cadres and paid activists. Excellent photography and sound design. Unfortunately the producer left out key details on why the official crossings are closed. You didn’t mention the assassination attempt in Eritrea when they were opened. You didn’t mention the public statements given by officials on either side. No mention of the critical elections (now suspended) in Ethiopia. No mention of the TPLF fugitives of the former regime in Ethiopia who were behind the border war. Also, how did Papa Fisehaye have so much money if he was in prison for 13 years? And what exactly makes him a “political prisoner”? All this effort to sew confusion and false narratives, sad. Thankfully it’s not working because apparently the people on the ground are more savvy and informed than the big news companies.

      Johnson Taylor If you don’t know what I’m implying you are quite clueless to the situation and should keep your mouth shut. There are construction projects being built all over Tigray province including Badame (still occupied by Ethiopian forces and provincial militias) with funding coming from illicit sources. What family has money to gamble on a multimillion dollar multistory building project in the middle of nowhere? You are a fool, the only one confused is you. The situation on the border is not solved and there are fugitives outstanding who are actually sabotaging the transition to normalization. This is not a simple human story as the producer would like you to believe, this is a narrative built on deception.

    • @fanakidane8442
      @fanakidane8442 Před 3 lety +2

      So, the border was closed by Eritrea’s president Esayas Afewerki. Both the Eritrean and Ethiopian leaders showed the world that both countries have come to terms and everything is fine and dandy which even got the Ethiopian prime minister a Nobel peace prize. However, we have now come to realize that it was all a military alliance agreement between the two countries to eliminate the TPLF political party which has been ruling in the Tigray region for decades ( TPLF is an enemy to both the Ethiopian government and obviously the Eritrean government, but a legitimately elected and truly glorified party by the Tigreans). When the border got shut again out of the blue, it sent a clear message to the TPLF and Tigraians that a possible war was coming. Fast forward 2 years later, Eritrea and Ethiopia’s federal government along with other outside forces have waged war upon Tigray. Currently in Tigray, Thousands are dying, thousands are fleeing to Sudan to save their lives, drones and fighter jets bombing continuously. Hospitals, universities, private and public businesses are getting looted and burned down to the ground. Women and children are getting slaughtered and raped in broad day light by both Ethiopian and Eritrean forces. Not to mention, the People of tigray have not had access to humanitarian aid, electricity, water, food, Internet service and any means of communication with the outside world for over 2 months now. The stories that are coming out are truly heart wrenching and history seems to be repeating itself for both the Tigreans and Eritreans. Basically, the Ethiopian leader wants power over the region of Tigray and the Eritrean leader seeks vengeance and TPLF is in the way.
